Donie Buckley is getting a lot of plaudits for his role with Kerry this year. Am i correct in saying that he was involved with Kerry senior team before about 7/8 years ago? By all accounts he is the man that has a big say and Kerry county board made a massive effort to get him on board this year. ryan (Donegal) - Posts: 484 - 17/07/2019 11:40:13 2212280 Link 0 |
He was a selector and coach with Kerry until 2012 iirc. The story goes that Jack O'Connor took over some of his duties himself while Donie was out for a while after an operation and Donie found himself with no real role when he came back. He left for Mayo where he was very highly regarded by all accounts. During the search for a new Kerry manager I think the county board were adamant that he had to be on the ticket. How much influence he is having is difficult to quantify but as well as his overall understanding of the modern game he specialises in defensive technique, tackling, footwork etc and has huge experience at the highest level obviously. If Kerry hadn't snapped him up he would have been highly sought after. GeniusGerry (Kerry) - Posts: 1957 - 17/07/2019 12:02:14 2212289 Link 11 |
Huge loss to mayo. Very highly regarded. Kerry's tackling, intensity and in game awareness will improve with this man back. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 10339 - 17/07/2019 12:26:35 2212310 Link 11 |
Heard from a great source that his name was put to the Cork County Board just after he left Mayo. Kerry got there first

Thanks for that. On the bit where the county board were adamant that he was part of the set-up does that mean that the county board selected him or the management selected him?

Who knows what went on behind the scenes but the pub talk was that Donie's inclusion on peter Keanes proposed coaching team was a big factor in his selection for the job. The CB know how good he is and wanted him working with the players.

Alan O Sullivan was doing the training and when Donie Buckley came back after being gone for over 6 months, he wanted full say again which wasnt allowed as he had missed most of the year. Donie didnt like it so he left

Has left the Kerry setup with immediate effect....this is no ordinary selector/trainer. A huge loss and all not well in the Kerry camp? yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 10339 - 07/03/2020 12:24:04 2272587 Link 11 |

Are you somehow suggesting that this will make a blind bit of difference to the outcome of the semi final ? Utterly no difference whatsoever, none ,nada, zero, zip. Stop with the drama lad. It's a stroll again. An ffffing stroll to another Munster title and well you know it.

If mayo had any sense they should be knocking on his door.

You called it fella It was a big call at the time with D Buckley leaving the Kerry setup and the rumour mill was that he was very much pushed P Keane to his credit made the call but I wonder was it at a very high price jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20035 - 12/11/2020 18:18:33 2308086 Link 0 |
It's up there now for discussion anyway. I was disappointed at the time to hear of Donie s departure and it was always going to be thrown back at Peter Keane when we lost. Now though to be fair while I'm not Keane s biggest supporter as a manager Donie s main influence in on defense and tackling etc and the Kerry defense played very well last Sun evening until the last second of extra time. So I'm not sure Donie Buckley influence would ve changed anything..What let us down the last day was an over reliance on defensive tactics imo. Now maybe if Donie was there things might be different. Who knows but we had Donie last year and twas our defending that let us down. Food for thought.
