The GAA’s Fixtures Task Force has today put forward a recommendation that the GAA calendar be split with no crossover between intercounty and club championship games.

County games would be played at the start of the calendar year until the All-Ireland finals in July. From July onwards club championship games would take place without the interruption of intercounty games.

The GAA have said that a consultation process will take place before plans are debated at the 2021 Congress next April with the intention that the new season plan would be in operation from 2022.

A split season took place this year due to the challenges posed by Covid-19 and the success of that model led to GAA President John Horan asking the Fixtures Task Force to consider a split season.

There are currently two proposals for how the intercounty championships should be run from 2022 onwards - a provincial system or a league based system.
