Biggest Club Rivalry In Meath

Replying To OLLIE:  "Sure Meath is a big oule county. It's the second biggest in Leinster after Wexford. Anytime I am driving west and I go through the Royal County it takes me about an hour to go through it. Traditionally in Louth the Newtown Blues v Cooley Kickhams would be the big one. These two are the most successful clubs in Louth. It is North Louth v South Louth and Urban club v Rural club. No two clubs have faced each more in Louth Senior finals than the Blues v Cooley. The Blues are the most successful club in Louth with 22 Senior titles. St Mary's and Dundalk Young Ireland's are next on the list with 11 Senior titles each and then Cooley is next on the list with 9 titles. Cooley have not won it since 1990 and are currently spending their second season in the Inter Championship. The Blues are going for the three in a row in Louth this year. The last club to this in the Wee County were Cooley in 1970's."
Wexford only pips Meath to title of Leinster's largest county, if these things were measured based on high tide Meath would actually bigger than Wexford (I know this because a friend of mine checked this out and ended up losing a bet over it).

A very hard question to answer. There are so many clubs. From what I can see neighboring village /townland clubs generally do not like each other. The rural clubs do not like the town clubs near them and now since the influx of Dubs into Meath most club's don't like the clubs on the Dublin border where many Dubs are seen to have taken over. The thing is there is so many football clubs in Meath a lot of the time due to being in a different grades what was a great rivalry can Peter out. The hurling rivalaries maybe last better as they most of the clubs are near each other in south Meath and because there are not as many clubs most play against each other more often in Senior level.

There is not much between Wexford and Meath in size. If Meath and Westmeath were one county it would be the 7th largest in the country. Currently Meath is the 14th largest county in Ireland.

Replying To bobkarlgees:  "It takes awhile to go across Meath especially from East to West the roads are bad. The M3 and M2/N2 Run from north to south nobody bothered with a decent East to West road. I dont think many people in Louth are mad about the Blues that's yibe I get :)
I think with rivalry its generally biggest between neighboring Villages, towns or county's. I always think of a episode of Family Guy, they did a episode in Ireland and some says 'He is from one village over so I hate he guts " I think that sums it up :) . I wonder dose local rivalry stem from faction fighting where villages used to beat the lard out of each other with sticks. Something that I think the English rule used to encourage to keep everyone from uniting and fighting the common enemy. Lets blame the English anyway :)"
Bob you are right about the Blues. Not too many people like them. Maybe because they are the most successful club in the Wee County.

Before the weekend I would have suggested Navan vs Simonstown, Kilmainham vs Drumbaragh, Skryne vs Curaha or Ashbourne vs Ratoath are the biggest rivalries in the Meath.
However as a neutral anyone who was in Trim on Saturday evening could certainly vouch for Summerhill & Moynalvey taking over as one of the biggest rivalries in the county. You could sense there was a real nasty edge to the game.
Also Moynalvey parish could not be closer to Summerhill village.
Two great footballing teams, but the manner in which the game was played was not nice to see.

The answer to that is simple, everyone once they play a neighbour is the biggest rivalry they will have. but the shared parish ones or where lads play underage together can be particularly spicy! Best of friends knocking lumps out of each other for an hour on the field and the slagging that comes after it. Loved playing the neighbours in my day, had some great battles (I do mean literally)
