Meath U21 Hurling Championship

(Oldest Posts First)

And people really wonder why Meath hurling or football isn't improving. U21 championships still going in December on pitches unplayable.
How is a young lad meant to showcase his talents or improve this time of year? They will lose interest.
These competitions should be ran alongside club championships. County board once again don't give a rats!!!!

Na Fianna v Trim in this years final. Any opinions on how this might fair out?

If they'd played the U21 along with the adult championships you'd have the clubs giving out about too many games in a short space of time players.

Plus they couldn't play the U21 final until Na Fianna got knocked out of Leinster (well, they could have, but the same people giving out here would be giving out about that too). Na Fianna won the U21 A football too so that ate up a few more weekends when they could have played it.

Least it's on a weekend in Navan this time. Last year's final was midweek in Dunganny where the sliotar was nearly lost in the long grass.

Cork U21 final played last sunday, Kilkenny and Dublin finals this weekend. The U21 is a hard one to get right, the players are involved in College,Club and county teams from January to October

I think that Dunboyne's involvement in football, both Senior and U21 also contributed to the delay. Na Fianna played their simi final v Ratoath between two Leinster games and there were no complaints.

Dunboynes semi final v trim was fixed for the Sunday before the u21 football final but was postponed becuase of a tragic death in the Trim club.

Understandable. What I was saying is that the clubs involved did not block any fixture, Trim had that tragedy, both Dunboyne and Na Fianna were also involved in u 21 football. Just happened that the clubs involved had multi irons in the fire over the last 2 months.
Going forward it might be a good idea to play u21 football early in the year and u21 hurling towards the end, but not as late as now, or visa versa.

It's generally the way though.. last year the u21 football final was played later than this year's. As someone said already it would be near impossible to run the 21s comps off any earlier between lads on college teams under 20 county teams u17 county teams and also senior inter county team and the adult club championship. There's no way u21 championship games could played unless clubs agreed to play without some of their players that are on u20 meath teams or college teams or whatever and let's be realistic clubs are not going to do that.

Athboy will be in great condition after tonight's rainfall if it arrives.. CB should be ashamed of themselves Athboy is in not condition to take ANY championship games. They have not even got dressing rooms which would fit 15 lads in, you certainly wouldn't see any of the 21 football finals moved out of navan

Extremely harsh on players asking them to play in athboy in this weather! Game still looks to be going ahead!

That caps off some year for Trim Hurling. Looking at something the club posted on facebook and it said they have won div 1 championships (bar under 14's) from u12's right through to u21 and with a good crop of young lads on the winning junior team too.Looks like they are doing the right things in that club.

Must say both teams were hard done by the county board by moving it to Athboy. I think it would have made a great curtain raiser to the Sean cox game in navan yesterday but I guess Andy didn't want people to realise the real athletes in the county are playing the small ball code.

I was talking to a lad from Trim on sunday, he told me the reason that the match was taken out of Navan was that they had nobody to steward the match that they were all in Ashbourne.Bullsh*te from the County Board I would say.
Trim did very well to win this match and have had a great year. Na Fianna also had a great year

Trim's re-emergence as a huring force this year is a big positive for Meath hurling. Along with Ratoath and Na Fianna with very strong underage teams and each team seeing the standard to aim for (i.e. Kiltale) this should hopefully bring Meath to a new level in the next few years.

Hat tip to Trim after losing a member of there squad less than a month ago it showed what winning this competition meant to them at te full time whistle. Have a feeling these u21 teams of Na Fianna and Trim will back bone future senior teams and become top contenders
