I couldn't give a fiddlers who wins the All Stars. Ask Ollie Texas if he'd trade his for an Ulster Championship Medal! ondforty (Cavan) - Posts: 442 - 19/11/2020 15:43:43 2311449 Link 1 |
Although we can hope for a win on Sunday, the form book suggests that we may come up short. I refuse to rule it out however. Physically, Donegal appear to be a bit further down the road than we are. Nevertheless, apart from the usual few here who, because of some old grudge or slight, are secretly hoping for a loss, most Cavan supporters are fully behind the boys. We aren't complete no hopes. Cavan have enough talent to put in a performance but need every break to fall their way. Exciting times nonetheless. Next year we might be picking a forward line from Mcveety, McKiernan, M Reilly, Madden, Connor Smith, Ted, Pierson, Caoimhin McGovern, and fingers crossed McDermott, Caoimhin Reilly, Patrick Lynch and others. But it's not fred. I am talking about this year and the state of the 2 teams and where they are at at the moment. This will be good experience for Cavan to try and nullify Donegal as much as possible. This year is a bonus year as far as the championship goes. There nearly wasn't a championship at all and it's pretty surreal anyway not being allowed to go and even seeing it on the TV with no crowd. what I don't want is for the team to have unrealiatic expectations of themselves. If they believe that they could win this game if they play a certain way or apply themselves a certain way then there could be irrepairable damage done. Look what happened last year against Donegal and to a greater extent against Tyrone. They got totally dissallusioned, lost control, lost discipline etc. Now if you go in being realistic and know your limitarions then you can control the situation much more and you wont lose heart or desire to play to the best of your ability. Break the game in to 10 minute spells and set out your goals for those 10 mins whether that might be to not lose those 10 minutes by more a point or more than 2 points or not to concede a goal or something like that so each seperate spell is an entity in itself and has an objective.

If you send a team onto the field telling them that they are not as good as the opposition and to try not to lose each 10 minute spell by too much, well then I think you know that will hugely damage morale. Why would you bother go back in 2021 if the manager doesnt believe you are good enough. Sorry but that is a crazy idea. Many of the lads on our team were well used to dealing with and beating Donegal at U21 level, you cant tell them now they aren't good enough to win and to keep the score down.

Discussing the All Srars is hardly a big deal. Cavan only have 2 so at least to be in contention would be good. The performance against Monaghan and Antrim were great performance in second half, but Cavan can't play like they did in first half of those games or it will be over. They need to be still in the game against Donegal wether they adjust their tactics FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2216 - 20/11/2020 09:04:53 2311610 Link 0 |
They didn't take to the field against Tyrone last year thinking they were going to win. And THAT was the problem! We lay down and got humiliated. What if, say, Murphy gets an early red card and we get an early goal. . .but it counts for nothing because we've decided we're going out to lose the game anyway?? Surely it'd be better to be in a position where we're putting it up to donegal already, and in a position to capitalise on any lucky break we might get cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 4135 - 20/11/2020 12:09:34 2311667 Link 1 |

You have to be hopeful. Cork didn't go out to lose their game. The message I m sure will be to go out and play every 10 minutes like it is their last. The method of play has progressed now as we now have ball winners in the full forward line that will cause any team problems. Goals will win this game and there is some evidence that the dam will burst on Sunday. Donegal are supposed to be big. Their defence is probably the smallest in the championship and includes at least 2 forwards and their full back is creeking like an auld barn door on a rusty hinge. Markers need to be put down in the 1st few minutes. Look at damage Cathleen's Falls has done to the Salmon stocks in the Cavan rivers since 1952. Time to let the dambusters out ! You chose to share this 'opinion' a week out from the team that you are supposed to be supporting playing in the Ulster final. Maybe wait until after the loss that you believe is inevitable to let us all know why they were no hopers. It's nonsense to suggest that they have no hope. Yes Donegal are favourites but it's a one off final and anything can happen.

Good luck to the management and team tomorrow, hopefully we get the rub of the green and after that it's down to ability and desire. kildare blue (Cavan) - Posts: 572 - 21/11/2020 11:10:37 2311950 Link 0 |
The best description of Neil McGee, or any player, I've ever seen! Brilliant!

what I really dont want to see is what happened to Meath tonight. I'm sure they would prefer to ha e lost that game by about 6-10 points than by 22 or whatever it was. I was just trying to look at strategies to keep it tight. I have seen reports citing similarities between 1997 and this year but that is nonsense. It is a completely different game now. It's no longer man on man or about individual ability. It's tactics, strategy, carried out by players at the peak of physical strength and conditioning who also havr athleticism and indurance allayed to a football brain. It takes years to achieve this with a squad. The turnover of players on our team is way to high to ever achieve this. Unless the turnover rate changes we cannot hope to win provincial or all-ireland titles. We have done exceptionally well to get this far but we shouldn't fool ourselves in to believing that we can go toe to toe with the big boys.

Here's the match programme for today: https://ulster.gaa.ie/ulsterchampionship2020/programmes/ulster-senior-football-championship-final/ It gives the full panel. 41 lads who are committed and in there. Maybe in Cavan some day supporters will finally focus on the lads who are committed and in the panel and not those who aren't. As I said previously, I have no problem with lads opting out for whatever reason but I wish supporters would stop talking about them. Dara McVeety , example, opted to go travelling. From an interview Conor Moynagh did with the GAA Hour, it doesn't sound like they plan coming home anytime soon with the lifestyle in Australia/New Zealand. More power to them to be honest. Both countries have looked after their Covid well and haven't half the restrictions we do. One of the other lads you've named above I am told opted out because he wanted to go on a trip to the UK with his mates. Again, more power to him. He's young and if that's what he wants so be it but I wish the conjecture on here and around the county about certain players would stop and we would respect and support the 40 plus committed lads in there. We're now in our second Ulster final in two years so what is in the panel isn't doing too bad! BreffniGuide (Cavan) - Posts: 450 - 22/11/2020 07:17:43 2312474 Link 1 |

Completely agree on focusing on who is on the panel, but to say Australia haven't had the restrictions we've had is way off the mark. Anyway. Best of luck to team and management today. You've given us Cavan fans a fantastic few weeks so far. Only 6 teams left in the championship and we're one of them. Win or lose, you've shown a pride in the jersey and a never-say-die attitude that has restored pride in the county. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 4135 - 22/11/2020 11:27:43 2312596 Link 0 |
Where did I say that the lads in there aren't doing well? I'm pointing out the growing strength in depth available to Mickey Graham. Moynagh, Mcveety, and any of those lads mentioned above have every right to join those who committed to the cause this year, and would add greatly to the panel. Who knows, they might be adding to a panel of Ulster medallists.

Getting nervous now. Think our lads will bring a performance, but going to be tough. Best of luck to all the fellas, from the starters to the management to the extended panel. All the best Loughduff Lad (Cavan) - Posts: 986 - 22/11/2020 14:54:27 2312756 Link 0 |
