Cavan V Donegal

Replying To FoolsGold:  "Yeah there would be a few from those teams that played against Donegal, Ciaran Brady, Clarke, Faulkner, Gerry Smith, McGlauglin, Madden
They didn't play Donegal in 2011 during the first of 4 in a row.

Donegal were the last team to beat Cavan u21s, before that 4 in a row, in 2010 Ulster final and ended that run in 2015."
Having watched Armagh and Donegall on Saturday I have to say they are some team and some of the football they play is a joy to watch they just blew Armagh away wave after wave of attacking football and that is very hard to stop dare I say that they are better than last year they mirror the way Dublin play these last few years it has to be a benchmark for the way we would want our players to play in Cavan going forward. Some of their posts mention our own Gearoid McKiernan and that they will need to watch him and how he is a big man who can score with either foot that's very true. But Donegall have several big athletic powerful men who can take a score I wonder what they feed them on and can we have some. Seriously though they are a very well drilled unit who won't be intimidated by Dublin and no I don't mean I'm throwing in the towel I want Cavan to win more than anything but being realistic we have a mountain to climb. As I'm in exile and a lot of my friends are Donegall people I wouldn't be surprised to see Sam heading to the hills again. Mickey Graham and his team have given us tremendous entertainment over the last five weeks and all credit to the players seven other Ulster teams would love to be in our position next Sunday so let's dare to dream. Up Cavan.

Yes they've given a lift in the covid times. Luke Fortune has impressed playing with regularly.

Ulster out of all provinces seems to want neutral venues. Munster final in Cork. Connacht final was in Galway. Breffni best playing surface in Ulster

Do we know who the referee is for Sunday - whoever it is needs to be wise to Michael Murphy's constant attempts to ref the game himself. Not forgetting how he got away with creeling Galligan in last year's final.

Replying To Allrevvedup:  "Firstly Well done Micley Dermot and the all the lads. Didnt look good at half time but came out for second half all guns blazing. It might not look great but letting the ball into the full forward line early and long will 9 times out of 10 work very well.Next Sunday I would put Madden inside on the square with Martin Reilly up there beside him. Two half Forwards Mc Kiernan and Oisin Kiernan. Midfield Thomas Galligan and James Smith 5 half backs Killian Clarke at No. 6 .Ciaran Brady and Niall Murray each side of him . These two wing men getting up to support your forwards. The two other half backs Luke Fortune and Gerry Smith would stay in defensive positions and hold. Play Faulkner at Full Back .Killian Gunner (needs to stop the silly fouls) and Jason Mc Loughlin in the corners.Of course Ray Galligan in Nets. Think thats our best 15 at the minute. It doesnt leave a lot to bring in for the second half. Comac O Reilly maybe but would have to play close to goals. Stephen Murray if available. And Timoney for defense. We cant afford a slow start like all the other games cos Donegal are a different animal so throw off the shackles and forget about the slow build up play and start launching that ball towards the Donegal goals We need more Marks Small 30 yard passes diagonally into Madden Reilly and McKiernan. These are handy scores. We need to work on them.

More aggression from the start Siege mentality for an hour or so and Dont let Neil Mc Gee get away with what he did last year.Go out and give it a good lash and you never know. P.S When is the Al semis"
What did Neil do last year?

He told the cavan management to take off Oisin Pierson who he was marking and put on Mackey

Awful carry on. The only solace to take from it is that at least Big Dermo is in there to protect these young Gowna lads and make sure they are treated well.

We cant spend too much time worrying about how to stop murphy, double marking him is definitely out as all the other forwards really stepping it up for donegal this year (Langan in particular will be a poty contender). Killian matched up quite well on mm last year so id say that will be same again.

We should just go for it and start with that twin target man approach from 2nd half last week, ie leave both Madden and T Galligan inside as primary ball winners with runners from deep coming off the shoulder (none of the orthodox corner forwards we have tried Pierson/S Smith/cormac reilly etc have really shown enough imo, their time will come). Marty reilly flitting between the half forward and ff line somewhere

Its going to be a huge task, donegal seem to have a gameplan for all scenarios and an unbelievable bench.
Keep the goals out and hang in there as long as possible.

As long as every man is busting himself like last week ill be happy enough

In response to a flurry of DM requests following my successful tips/predictions and value bets over the last few rounds, below are this weekend's much anticipated and carefully considered selections. They have been selected with a heavy, heavy heart in most cases as I am hoping for a Cavan win.

Value Bet of the Day
Donegal to score 2 palmed goals - #AskPaddyPower - I would say they will give at least 12/1, if not closer to 20/1
(I am waiting to hear back from PP on a price and they are likely to be running scared after the last weeks trimmin')

Other very good bets
Donegal by 7-9 points - 7/2
Draw (on the Paddy Power Handicap of Donegal -7) - 10/1
Jamie Brennan First Goalscorer - 4/1

Cavan Fan Fun Bets
Thomas Tedward First Goal 18/1
Padraig Faulkner Anytime Goalscorer 18/1

Disclaimer: Please note that all selections are subject to Mickey's setup for the game. For the purposes of this exercise, I am going to assume that Mickey will combine my proposed master plan with a few of his own ideas, and probably won't go as defensive as I have suggested he should in my team selection post. Though I do expect him to take on board a few of my proposed changes, including starting TED in beside Galligan, and holding Madden until HT again.

Replying To kildare blue:  "i have to agree with the idea that Mickey must plan to try and win the game even if it risks a hammering. We have enough good men around the middle of the field to be competitive in that sector. The best way to stop the Donegal forwards is to starve them of the ball. Push up on their kick outs and turn it into a battle zone in the midfield sector.

We have to have a cut at them, we can't just stand back and let them over power us."
disagree. We are never going to beat Donegal so damage limitation should be the order of the day. frustrate them. pack the defence and dont let the forwards run riot. If they score points from 30-40 yards fair play but dont let them near the goals. We did great to get this far, probably could and should have lost all 3 games. Dont be getting any notions that we can beat the likes of Donegal. We cant. So if we come out of Armagh with anything less than a 10 point defecit we can hold our heads up high and look forward to 2021.

Ah come on!

To say we can't beat them is simply wrong. We can. It's unlikely, very unlikely, and the odds reflect that. Donegal are overwhelming favourites and if we were to beat them, it would take some considerable luck combined with a drop-off in performance from them and a marked improvement from ourselves.

But we 100% need to go out looking to win the game. And that's what I fully expect Cavan to try and do. Anything less is not acceptable and this group of players and management have more about them than that.

Not much point in playing the game just make up a Covid outbreak and hold the heads high and look forward to 2021

We got out to win or we might as well stay at home. We did damage limitation in the first half in last year's final and where did it get us?

When we turned the tide against Down and Monaghan when we pushed up on the kick outs, when we allow the short kick out we only get punished as we are not good at dealing with runners from deep..

Big difference in Patton's kickout tho. Beggan is very good but Patton is out on his own. If we push up and force him to go long, he can still pick out a man 60 yards away. It essentially leaves us 1 v 1 all over the field if we push up. That's a very high-risk strategy. Look at the goal v Tyrone. Patton picked out Mogan on the run and Mogan first touched the ball on the Tyrone 45 running at the Tyrone defence!

Very defeatist attitude there.

What will be the difference in 2021 apart from our slightly higher heads?

Should we try to win Ulster next year?

Patton was professional with Sligo Rovers a few years ago, he'd be use to performing to a good level. I don't think there would be much difference in him and Beggans range. Beggan picked out some quality passes against Dublin in league earlier in year
Ray Galligan has good distance.

With the knockout nature this year, means less chance for players to impress for an All Star. Sunday will be Cavans 4th game, Ray Galligan performing consistently. Another good performance on a Sundayx and he could be in the reckoning

Yeah, I reckon he's in line for a nomination alright. Faulkner, McKiernan, T Galligan all catching plenty of media attention too with their performances. A big game on Sunday from any of them will put them in contention.
