Daly, John

John Daly of Ballinderry, Mullingar passed away in his 70th year on Friday, September 9th, 2016. John was renowned as both a sportsman and businessman, having played gaelic football and soccer with distinction. He was a member of the history-making first Mullingar Shamrocks team to win the Westmeath SFC in 1964, lining out at left corner forward as St Mary's, Rochfortbridge were defeated in the final. Two years later, he featured in the same position as Shamrocks easily collected their second county title, this time at Maryland's expense. The club didn't return to a senior final again until 1979, but John was still involved, taking his place amongst the substitutes as Athlone prevailed in the decider. After hanging up his boots, John maintained a lifelong interest in the fortunes of Mullingar Shamrocks GAA Club.
