Meath V Dublin Leinster Final. - 15 Like(s)

Replying To Young_gael:  "How I miss the old days when a Meath team could take lumps out of the city slickers. Keep your wisecracks and your attitude and see if you can meet your bark with bite. All codding aside I got lured into a forum like this in Spring 2019 when Meath were to play the Dubs in a Leinster Final and I dont want to go down that rabbit hole again on a personal note. We're all excited for this game, it has huge tradition. However, If a certain Meath poster could throw his phone in a safe and lock it until next saturday and save us all the embarrassment it'd mean a lot, sincerely, the entirety of the forum and particularly the Meath element."
In fairness I think a certain Meath poster is a good Meath fan and is entitled to post here like the rest of us. I don't doubt you're a sincere Meath fan young_gael and I genuinely do like a lot of your posts, but you seem to be on the apologetic side. I don't know if you're just looking for likes but it comes across as pandering to people who probably pleasure themselves to the sight of Meath being beaten. One feature of the successful Meath teams under Boylan was we didn't give a single fcuk what anybody thought of us and personally that's how I feel and it makes winning all the sweeter. Now I'm not unrealistic, I know we face a huge task in 6 days time, but we might as well just enjoy the craic on here and not worry too much about what others may think or say about us.

Should The Rebel Flag Be Banned At Cork Matches? - 14 Like(s)

Replying To MesAmis:  "I don't know what Greta Thunberg has to do with this? She's an environmentalist no? She has nothing to do with allowing or not allowing white supremacist pro-slavery flags at GAA matches. Or maybe I've missed something. I also don't see what your lifestyle or family has to do with the removal of white supremacist pro-slavery flags from GAA grounds either? I'm not offended by the removal of white supremacist pro-slavery flags from GAA grounds at all so don't know what the 'perpetually offended' reference is about either. We can engage in whataboutery or can have a discussion. The issue is whether or not you're in support of people flying white supremacist pro-slavery flags in GAA grounds. It isn't about anything else."
I'll just respond to this post to keep things simple. The discussion is more about the meaning of the flag, you've taken a hardline view that it means white supremacy and that's it. I'm arguing that people waving the flag at Cork matches are doing so to support their county and nothing more. Also, like i said previously, generally speaking flags themselves hold no inherent meaning, we humans attach meaning to them. So what has an average Cork fan waving a Confederate flag got to do with white supremacy? Would you not agree that they are merely supporting their county? As for what's being dismissed as "whataboutery", I'm simply highlighting the censorship of Little Britain & Gone With the Wind and the lack of corresponding censorship of White Chicks to show the inconsistency and hypocrisy of the current wave of far left pressure groups. But if you wish to ignore and dismiss those points outright then that's your choice. Personally I don't think we'll learn much from history if we try to whitewash it and ban things left right and centre in the process.

Replying To KillingFields:  "It's not that they are supporting what the confedracy did but flying that flag does show an ignorance Of course they're using it to support cork but saying they're doing just that and ignoring what the flag actually represents is missing the point. There is acceptance through flying that flag that what that flag represents is ok. The use of blackface etc in little Britain was extremely racist and surprising it's only now that it's been cut"
They're supporting Cork, not slavery, what's the issue? Ok let's say Little Britain is racist, then by your logic surely Fr Ted must go for the Chinese episode, also surely the Simpsons must go for it's many stereotypical racial depictions (not least of the average white man), also interestingly White Chicks has not been removed from anywhere to my knowledge (personally I couldn't care less, but it seems a bit of a double standard!). Anyway what say you to the above, ban'em all if you're being consistent.

Replying To Whammo86:  "If I learnt that something I loved made someone else feel like a lesser member of our society I would listen to them and think on whether it's true or not. If it was to be removed it would be a tiny hardship on me in the grand scheme of things. It would pale into insignificance in comparison to the hardships that other endure and are perpetuated by an uncritical analysis of racism and portrayals of racism in our society. I would get over it. You are very happy for others to have to get over the existence of racist symbols in our society. I think I'd be quite able to get over the loss of them. We'll all have our points at some stage where we believe things have gone too far. I will probably lose things that I love at some point and I maybe won't agree with it but you know what it'll be because I live in a democracy where others have had their say and you know what I'll live. Honestly how many times do you expect to watch that episode of Father Ted in your life again if it's always available to you. It's a pretty insignificant hardship. You'll also likely be able to find it. Gone With the Wind was removed from one platform. It's still available in other forms, it's in the top 48 highest rated films on iTunes currently for example. So to be honest I think most of these "where will it end" arguments are utter nonsense and always blown out of proportion to make it seem like there's a hard left cultural war being waged. It's not. It's a bit of push back on what's deemed acceptable and it's a healthy process for society to engage in."
Look I absolutely agree that it's important to listen to people and re-evaluate their positions from time to time, that's all part of growing up and moving on. It's the reason why we went from homosexuality basically being in Ireland until the 90s to legalizing gay marriage by popular vote in 2015 which personally I though was a great day for Ireland. But I also don't think that every single thing I like should have to be pre-approved by society first, that seems quite dictatorial. There are plenty of things I don't like but rather than trying to ban them I just don't interact with them and as such they don't cause me any stress. Also just regarding people's level of hardship if you want to call it, well that's completely subjective, you have to make a choice as to who's hardship matters and who's doesn't. I have to say I completely disagree with your dismissal of people's concerns regarding the growing influence of radical leftist groups/ideology. Will you practice what your preach though and hear out our concerns or simply dismiss them as "utter nonsense"

Replying To bobkarlgees:  "What a goalkeeping mess. Total mismanagement in this area. https://www.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-games/gaelic-football/goalkeeping-woes-have-royals-in-need-of-safe-pair-of-hands-38912621.html?token=1575202168"
I'm not sure our goalkeeping woes are all management's fault, granted we don't seem to have a clear strategy from kickouts other than the bog standard lump it up the field and try to win it, which is 50/50 at best. But what can management do? All our keepers are either average or not willing to commit, we don't have an intercounty level keeper. No offence intended to either Colgan or O'Rourke before him, but when those lads try to pick out their men they often miss the target and get us into deep trouble (think Mayo last year). Management can't kick the ball for them, they have to do it themselves. Lumping the ball up field and hoping for the best is not a good tactic in this day and age (especially when you don't have brilliant natural fielders of a ball) but it's the lesser of 2 evils when you run the risk of going short and presenting the ball on a plate to opposition forwards.

Lads the stand badly needs to be knocked and a new one built, this is a matter of urgency. The grass banks are unsightly and also need to be done, not as urgent as the stand but they cannot be ignored. The very fact that they are still there is an indictment of the complacency and incompetence of our county boards going back decades. The terrace is fine for now, it serves a purpose but the plans to replace it should be seen through before it becomes a problem.

Bit of over reaction here, it's been a poor league campaign but not a disaster, relegation would have been a disaster. We've performed to our level (an average div2 team) as we have done for the majority of the last 10 or so years, it's been nothing different. I'll accept that, that's very disappointing and highly frustrating because probably most of us remember the good days and we all desperately want to see some signs that we're improving and it's just not happening. But we have to give the new manager some time, Rome wasn't built in a day and all that. Also, personally I think we're going to find it difficult to improve on the intercounty scene while we persist with such a poor club championship structure, we have to get our house in order first and we simply won't do it!

Replying To LeitrimRoyal99:  "I believe the reason for doing the terrace first is for 2 reasons. 1. It means we can still play there/have club championship there. Also and crucially it's to realign the pitch. Right now there is way more space owned by Meath GAA behind the stand side. I think they are going realign the pitch and have it much closer to the stand (knocking the concrete seating below the current covered stand). The new stand has a bigger footprint than current terrace (just doing off the digital image produced). My two main concerns, Originally we are building a 4,000 stand. Firstly, I seen somewhere (I think the chronicle) that it was going to be 3,000 covered. Why are 1,000 uncovered. That seems idiotic. Secondly the end plan is for a 7,000 stand. How will we make it from a 4,000 seater with 1,000 covered to 7,000 all covered"
Well look in fairness I'm not going to criticize the current administration as I believe the problems with PT pre-dates many of them. Also I haven't read the plans inside out so I'm not exactly sure what the plans are stage by stage, is there a link anywhere for that? The main thing for me is that we commit 100% to full re-development, doesn't matter if it takes 10 years, just commit and get it done. These projects aren't easy and funding is always a struggle but I where there's a will there's a way, we can do it.

Sure look it, we'll turn up for a little kick about next saturday night but it's a big ask for amateurs to beat professionals! I think Dublin winning 10 Leinsters in a row is a phenomenal achievement despite their massive financial advantage and I'd like to congratulate them on their victory. There'll be serious celebrations in Meath next saturday.....where most of the Dubs now live :-)

1. Journalist asked a stupid question for whatever reason. 2. McEntee told him off as I'm sure many of us would have. 3. The Chronicle have gone on a spectacular witchhunt with complete disregard for the Meath team in order to sell papers. Saldy they'll probably get their apology to. .....and all this while we're preparing to try and make the last 8 for the first time since 2010, thanks Meath Chronicle, top form.

Undoubtedly some very entertaining knockout stages games in the Meath championship this year and that's what we need in Meath football, but it begs a very obvious question, why do we allow such a rubbish group stage system before the real stuff starts? Here's 2 things that really annoyed me about this years championship (ps, nothing personal against any of these teams): 1. Na Fianna made it to the KO stages having won just 1 out of 5 group games 2. St. Colmcille's and Rathkenny both lost 4 games out of 5 and didn't even have to play in a relegation play off 18 Senior teams is too many, 1 relegation is not enough and 3 groups of 6 is pathetic, you should only be able to lose a maximum of 1 game and still be in with a chance. Now I await the backlash.

Replying To MesAmis:  "It is incredible the amount of who get offended by the removal of a white supremacist pro-slavery flag. Their argument of "it's PC gone mad" or "where will it end?" is pure strawman whataboutery. It's pretty simple, with all the knowledge we have in 2020. You either think it's OK to fly white supremacist pro-slavery flags at GAA matches or you don't. It's not about anything else, the above is all its about. A lot of people on this thread seem to think it is OK which is sad in this day and age."
Reads a bit like Greta Thunberg there Mes, cool down man, we're just having a discussion. Anyway, I live a pretty ordinary life, I have friends of all creeds and colours, my interests include reading, working out, spending time with family and the occassional spot of golf etc But I have to say I had no idea I was a raging white supremacist for not supporting the removal of the confederate flag from Cork gaa games or not supporting the wave of left wing bans nor the perpetually offended but there you go, every day is a learning day :-)

Interesting to note the amount of 'support' this impassioned speech on how hopeless Meath are has received. Do people really support this negative 'quit before you start' type of bile? If so, it's no wonder we're struggling given the appalling level of defeatism in the county. We lost a game of football, there are 6 more in the NFL, lets see how they go before throwing the toys out of the pram and attacking fans who have the nerve to display optimism. Ps, was there really that much genuine support for that downbeat tirade or is there some sad case going around with mulitple accounts supporting any comment which castigates Meath and/or optimistic Meath fans. Anyway I hope we beat Donegal just to píss off all the 'Meath fans' :-)

Have to say I'm looking forward to this one with nervous excitement, we're in a very strong position and it would take a huge Fermanagh effort to overturn the difference (or a big Meath collapse but fingers crossed they appear to be getting more scarce these days). I've been very impressed with our lads so far this year, 5 wins and 1 defeat (which was a little unlucky in fairness), I honestly didn't see that coming. I'd be over the moon to see us get back to division 1, seems like an age since we last kicked a ball at that level. Don't think I've looked forward to an NFL game this much in a long time, hopefully a big crowd turns up and fingers crossed we don't get any unwanted drama.

What Can The GAA Learn From The NFL Season Structure In America? - 11 Like(s)
Look it's fun to play around with ideas and dream up new structures but for me the American NFL structure wouldn't work with the Gaa at all. For a start the NFL is a fully professional league with some players making tens of millions a year in salary alone. Our lads have their own jobs to juggle and imposing a 16 game regular season on them in 17 weeks + whatever else for the 12 teams who qualify would drive many away from playing altogether. Although I agree a tigher season is a good idea and the Gaa should have done it long ago. Friday night games were tried once and failed miserably, again because our lads have their own jobs. You can't expect them to work a 40+ hour week and then play a big championship game on the friday evening. Probably having to leave work early and travel, it went down like a lead baloon the last time for a reason. Again not to shoot you down for the sake of it, having an intercounty game to watch on a Friday evening would be nice, but it's not fair on the players and won't happen going forward. Finally the issue of dead rubbers and players walking away come into it. The Bengals had a terrible season last year (2-14) but still drew crowds of 40k+ because the NFL is huge over there and places like Cincinnati want to maintain their team, ie fans will often show up even if the team is doing woefully and the players are well paid pros so there's no issues there. Now could you imagine two division 4 teams with say 2-11 records each meeting in a round 14 game....there'd be no fans there and they'd likely not be able to field teams as most of the players would have walked away!!
