Replying To seadog54: "Apart from Morris the starting f/f line was poor, there is no doubt that Walsh has talent but today especially, he wanted far too much time on the ball and was turned over too easily by a bad Wicklow defence. A good all round preformance, thought our tackling in first half was very good, got a bit ragged later on but by then game was well over. Good to get a win at long last, panel looks much stronger than previous number of years, next week should be a cracker against Kildare." Agree - sounds like an odd thing to say given scoreline but had the exact same thoughts on Walsh and O'Reilly today. Not that I am concerned on either but will need to be back on it the next day or we'll be in trouble.
Mento and Jones particularly were excellent, Jones has been different class this year, what a footballer.
Won't get mentioned in here also so said I will, Shane Mac was excellent and one of the standouts in a game where it is hard to standout when it's not much of a contest.
Costello another big positive, was shocked to see him lining out as planned being honest but a strange move fully vindicated. Not sure we can be quite as attacking next week given Kildares calibre of forward but that was spot on today.

Overall I thought Meath were poor up front also. Reilly is very hot and cold, but very cold yesterday, Lenihan getting a raw deal I think. Goalkeeper still making mistakes and this will come back to haunt us. We are improving but still miles behind the Dubs.

I was one that didn't think he should start but thought he did well too! Hard to read to much into this but it was certainly a good performance and a real building block. It affirms the progress that is being made and the big thing for me is that the strength of the squad looks better than it has done in recent years. That said, can't look past the next round and what is sure to be a much sterner test! I think the format this year being a straight knockout gives team a real chance to shake things up. Cork beating Kerry yesterday and no backdoor for Kerry - well hopefully the Dubs will feel an extra bit of anxiety!!

Imo he gets an really hard time on here and a lot of it unreservedly. Do i think he would start when we have everyone fit? No i don't. Is he definitely worth a place on the panel and on the bench ? Yes i do. Fact is if the likes of harnan niall kane shane Gallagher james mac were fully fit i think he would miss out but these lads for 1 reason or another over the last few years have struggled to remain fit or available for an extended period of time and i think shane mac is the best option there to cover them. He's no world beater he won't win an all star but he's a great squad player to have and to bring off the bench or to start when those lads i mentioned aren't available.

I know its a terrible thing to say after putting up 7-14 in a championship match but yesterday was clearly not good enough and some people are getting ahead of themselves.
Goalkeeper - still not right, kicked two balls into the arms of Wicklow players. That will be punished by Kildare and any other team i f we progress. Not really tested otherwise. I'm not convinced with the thinking here at all. As someone says if you've two keepers you really have none. Your #1 is your #1 and you don't change it.
Defence - Did ok but weren't really stretched at any point. They attacked well with Costello, Keoghan and Shane. That's good but will they have such front foot ball v Kildare. How will they defend against better forwards. That will be a better marker of where we are. Fair play to McGill and Ryan, held the middle well, some block by Conor in the first half.
Midfield - developing as a very good partnership. winning ball, pushing forward and supporting attack and defence, Feely will be a very good test for them on Sunday. They did well v Dublin and Monghan, so this is another guide to how we're moving.
Forwards - still too greedy and taking too much time out of the ball and running up blind alleys (O'sullivan always at it). Again when faced with better opposition that will be killer.
Subs - Great to have an impact from the bench, 4-2 contributed as wallace won both penalties.
Strength and conditioning - seeing the impact of Niall Ronan and individual plans from him. Players are turning balls over in the tackle. You need to do this in modern football and our players are doing that. Dunno which paper it was in but there was a great article with him on how GAA is such a shambles with no joined up thinking.
Movement - there was great movement on and off the ball with guys coming off the shoulder and in space, thats what needs to be developed to beat the top teams. Players played with heads up which is a really positive attitude. If we can cut out the running up blind alleys and into contact we'll start moving forward and get results agianst the best teams.
Negatives Kick outs - will cost us before the end of the championship. Wicklow didn't push up but be sure Kildare will and leave Feely in the middle if Mark or Marcus or Andy goes long. How have we not worked much harder on this.
Running down blind alleys - We need to be much smarter with the ball, we're carrying it into contact and better teams with higher S&C will turn us over. Need to be much smarter and offload at the tackle point when players are committed
Free taking - time for Andy to select a couple of free takers, bring in a kicking coach and get them working much harder on it. Look at Dean Rock, he wasn't a 70% kicker but honed his craft year on year, developed a style and process and Dublin never give frees to anyone else. Yesterday at different points we'd 5 separate free takers. One is enough, two is overkill and 3 shows the manager doesn't trust the team.
45's - We had 5 attempts (more than normal) and 0 scores direct from them. Do we honestly not have a player that can kick a ball 45 metres off the floor. First one Costello looked like a lad that was trying to burst the ball rather than relax and trust his process. 2 and 3 i can't remember (Walsh and Reilly i think) but both were very poor. 4 and 5 were both kicked short and ended up going up blind alleys. Kildare would murder us if that happens. But again shows that management have not catered for all eventuallities. Again that is where having 1 designated taker working with a kicking coach developing their style and process makes things easier. Repetition repetition repetition

I would actually start Colgan in goal for this reason alone. He kicked them for Ashbourne and was very successful. I would start him ahead of Brennan anyway but even if i thought Brennan was slightly ahead of him I'd go with him for his long rang free taking.

Also thought Shane Mac had a very good game, read the game very well and his distribution was first class, either kick or hand pass, where others carried into traffic, he played the simple pass and was vital link between backs and forwards. Kildare as you say have good forwards and one area I would be concerned about if their ability to field high ball and take the mark.

I cannot understand Andy Colgan not being in goals at the weekend. He may have his faults and has a lot of areas to improve on but he is still our best option we have. No offence to Brennan, but his short kick outs are going to kill us big time, like what happened against Dublin a few weeks ago. They are to short, slow and low on the ground in my opinion. Andy has a strong long kick out to hit pockets for players to run into, Brennan's long kick outs hang in the air to much. Colgan also offers us a solid 45/long range free taker off the ground which we didn't have last week. What I think may be going against Colgan is that he is not vocal or commanding enough, where as Brennan may be more vocal. I would only love if Jimmy Corcoran from Drumbaragh could be coxed into the Meath set up. I believe he was asked in/was in for a brief period but opted to stick with the soccer in Dundalk. I think he is our best bet outside of what we have as no other keeper on the club scene in Meath that is available is good enough in my opinion.

Replying To BigJoe14: "I cannot understand Andy Colgan not being in goals at the weekend. We will have to keep the kickouts well away from the center of the field against Kildare as Feely will earn a mark on every one.

On Colgan it does appear he picked up a dead leg during the week as I've heard it from a few people now. So that was the reason.
