redser, the Stephen Bray we seen in 2007 would definitely start corner forward on our 1996 team. He's a better forward than Donal Curtis ever was.

Keoghan and Bray would have got on any of the four teams to win AI's browncows (Meath) - Posts: 2189 - 26/07/2019 16:18:39 2216831 Link 12 |
I think is easy to take Graham ( most disappointing play of the last decade who showed early potential ) Kevin Reilly who was reasonable without being outstanding ....Bray head and shoulders above the rest ....keoghan too early to say !

What about the other 3 teams tho? Which All Ireland teams are you talking about? Could 87/88 be considered the same team?

He didn't say good enough to get into any team, not just the 96 team. He wouldn't get into the Flynn, Stafford, O'Rourke FF line. That being said. Jaysus I'd love him in his prime on the team now haha

Mickey Burke as good a servant as he has been can hardly be considered. How would he compare long term to other Meath players in his position and cannot think of a single game in which he stood out. Would struggle to make a Meath team in any other era unlike rest of the list. Kevin Reilly was good at times but very injury prone. Stephen Bray had a few good years but perhaps not enough. Biggy could be electric but never really did it on the biggest days particularly against Dublin. Keogan with his consistency for me. Lets hope he continues well into the next decade.

What are you talking about? Can you even name the Meath full forward line in 96?

Would def get in ahead of Barry Callaghan and even Kelly

Brendan Reilly, Colm Brady and Barry Callaghan? Hardly an inspring full forward line. Forever grateful for Reillys winning point but Brady and Callaghan were average Meath seniors. Now the 1999 forwards line much better with Giles, Geraghty, Murphy and Kelly in their prime. The point I'm trying to make is that Stephen Bray would get on our 1996 or 1999 All Ireland teams.

As would Seamus Lavin on the form he showed this year.

Brendan Reilly scored 5 pts from play in all Ireland semi final against Tyrone, 3 pts from play against Mayo in drawn game and scored winner in the replay after a brilliant piece of skill on the pick up and dummying all star corner back Kenneth Mortimer before shooting from an impossible angle with his weaker left foot. He had been playing in defence up until 96 and had been a brilliant team player. He narrowly missed out on an all-star award in 96 but followed it up with an all-star in 97 and captained Meath in 98 before bowing out. I thought Brendan was a super player and find your comments very dismissive. Evan Kelly started all games except final replay and turned out to be a super player also collecting an all-star. He was young in 96 but had a decent year and did very well in 95 in his debut year. Barry Callaghan did fairly well in 96 scoring 2pts in Leinster final, 1-2 in semi final and a crucial pt in replay. He was a big physical presence and also had a good year at center back in 98. Colm Brady had been an excellent midfielder but was badly injured in his prime but regained fitness before all Ireland. He made a great impact as a third midfielder in drawn all Ireland and contributed well in replay. These guys had excellent pedigree.I find your comments quite dismissive and lack real insight. The initial comment was that Curtis played in 96. This is not correct. Not to mention Curtis was also an excellent utility player. The fact of the matter whether we like it or not, no Meath player has truly done it at highest level in last 10 years.

"Decade" refers to 2009-2019. Anmhi364 (Meath) - Posts: 41 - 03/08/2019 06:49:13 2219958 Link 1 |
I remember a qualifier game against Leitrim must have been about 12 years ago in Carrack on Shannon. The game, which we were expected to win easy, was going badly. Burke came on, I think early in the second half and did really well, he just was constantly getting on the ball and linking the play. We got a draw and won the match in extra time. That match, had Burke not come on would probably have been lost, which would have been a terrible result.

You've a great memory and you're right about Reilly. He was an unsung hero but getting back to the point. I'm talking about the full forward line as a whole. Callaghan nor Brady never cut it as inside forwards and so Stephen Bray in his prime would definitely get on the 1996 team and at a push the 1999 team. Where have I said Curtis played in 1996? I simply stated Bray was a better forward than the Rathkenny man. Anyway look comparing players and teams from different eras can be silly.
