Colgan has to be replaced and it's as simple as that, making the team look a lot worse due to his mistakes, was the cause today for 2-2 from poor kick outs and then that incident at the end Meath4Sam2020 (Meath) - Posts: 122 - 21/07/2019 15:44:03 2213992 Link 2 |
Good performance from all but our keeper he really isn't up to county standard hopefully for Kerry game he'll be dropped has cost us 2-2 today and 1-3 last week we won't win any games in div 1 next year giving away that much from our own kickouts. Very frustrating when we played so well at the back today. But there's a decent team there replace coglan we could do very well next year username.if (Meath) - Posts: 66 - 21/07/2019 15:53:43 2214005 Link 1 |
Who do you put in his place? I'd be more concerned at our lack of capable forwards. We are short a decent ball winner in midfield also.

The problem is teams are all too aware of our vulnerability from short kick outs. This then places huge pressure on our keeper and kicking out the ball becomes a game of Russian roulette. Perhaps it's a psychological problem in the side. They are cognisant of this vulnerability themselves and know it's coming at some stage towards the end of each game.

You still think I was lying about Newman getting injured during the week?? He never looked right from the off today

If he's the best we have we haven't a chance next year in div 1. Unfortunately is it of mcentees making that better keepers aren't prepared to play. Colgan isn't even the best keeper in ashbourne. Robbie burlingham is no worse. It's not coglans fault he's trying his best just frustrating watching him make simple mistakes that cost us.

Poor showing again late in the second half. Clear as day what we need to work on fitness wise. Based on today and the last day Conlon needs to go back on the bench and Shane Walsh to start. Badly need about 4 or 5 quality players to shore up that team. Goalkeeper below the required level. Well done Mayo but that was hard work. Cillian O'Sullivan needs to take the blinkers off. Had options and ignored them too often. LoyalRoyal (None) - Posts: 414 - 21/07/2019 17:23:51 2214077 Link 3 |
Yeah I agree every county is aware that if you go full press on Meath's kick outs it will be rewarded, I was surprised that mayo didn't press fully in the first half but when they did it resulted in them gaining primary possession, I don't blame Colgan but he doesn't have the skill set needed to be a top intercounty keeper, if we have a keeper who is comfortable and confident to play both short and long kick outs I feel that there would be a lot more movement out the field but I feel that the players themselves know he won't be able to land a kick out just in front of them when there on the run

Another spirited showing, no doubt. With the right kick-out strategy and actual midfielders to contest and a few forwards we could have won. Well done Mayo, but there are limitations to them also and you'd have to think their celebrations at the end at beating this Meath team shows where they are. Still though, massive respect for this Mayo team and their inability and refusal to go away. Young_gael (Meath) - Posts: 391 - 21/07/2019 17:52:53 2214101 Link 13 |
Who are these players that McEntee needs to swallow his pride for ?

Off the top of my head Paddy o Rourke (if panel accept) Padraig McKeever Ruari o'c And hope Lenihan is back for the year Speculatively Ronan Jones or conor Nash would be what the doctor ordered We aren't looking for 10/12 players just 2-4 who can push us on. Most important is goalie. Thejoeshow (Meath) - Posts: 468 - 21/07/2019 18:31:14 2214141 Link 0 |
I think he means he has to admit that this current squad has gone as far as it can and bring fresh blood in. Something the poster seems to think he's reluctant to do. BoynesideBlue (Meath) - Posts: 130 - 21/07/2019 18:40:20 2214151 Link 0 |
Yes indeed it just proves we are on a learning curve . Definite progress this year for players and management.. I think it is fairly obvious what the key learning points are................ I would say 1 We lost to day because of lack of experience from our youngest players.in particular 2. We had to play players we know are not at the required standard because we have little options. 3. Players who could not commit for 2019 need to be called in for a chat to find out how they stand going forward. I suggest players like Paddy o Rourke. Ronan Jones. Harry Rooney and 1 or 2 others be included here Players have every right to take time out for various reasons because they are not professionals. Management will no doubt have learned ,and may wish to change areas of approach if appropriate. Well done to all concerned for their efforts in delivering progress this year. Hopefully we can find those players for next year in order to progress further........A lot done...more to do !! nobull456 (Meath) - Posts: 841 - 21/07/2019 18:42:31 2214154 Link 0 |
I don't have all the answers, and ill not pretend to be an expert; I don't attend as many club games as many others mostly due to work, and I wont name names because its none of my business, but Id have to think that in a county with dozens of clubs urban and rural alike, that there are men with the varied individual attributes required to bring the team on another step. What is on show at the moment, with the utmost of respect is of an upper mediocre standard. Ive made many posts where I was very complimentary of this team and I remain fond of them, pure work-rate has them where they are and this has been a red letter season. I believe this team's achievement will be appreciated in time. Im proud to have followed them this season and will continue to follow them in the future. However I also believe that in order to consolidate the position we find ourselves in for 2020, we will need a new goalkeeper, one (maybe 2) midfielders, and two or three new forwards. Just my own opinion. The lads who are there cant be faulted for work, and passion, and effort, and they all deserve our respect, but they're peaking at this level.

Another spirited performance that will stand to the guy in division 1 next year. A good forward able to take frees would be just the tonic. RoyalSteel (Meath) - Posts: 13 - 21/07/2019 18:53:18 2214168 Link 0 |
At 55 mins again we were right in this game. I think Meath supporters who have been at most matches this year agree that we are talking about the same issues game after game. While the year has been extremely positive overall, extremely disappointed management have not at least try to address the goalkeeper issue. I genuinely feel sorry a number of players having to play with such a liability. Management must take a huge amount of blame for this. Staying on a watching Kerry v Donegal, I can see so much more potential from time with a proper keeper. Again McGill, Lavin and Menton were excellent. Keogan was great at times but looked really tired. O'Sullivan tried hard but otherwise did not really perform. I believe Walsh could be a super player. Devine did fairly well also. I was very disappointed with McMahon after showing well last day while Conlon struggled. S McEntee not a county midfielder while James lacks creativity to be a forward. Need to improve our panel hugely as still alot of players not up to standard. Super 8's has a least shown where we need improvements and the players who are up to the level.

Thought we put up a reasonable fight today. but we just don't have the quality at present . Most county teams will stay with each other for 50 to 55 mins and then quality and depth take over every time . Much will be made of the goalkeeper ,but in fairness he played well enough today . Conlon too easy to knock around ,and we probably don't have any real quality forwards who can lead and win the big games . Navan game will be just a training exercise ,and expect to see Graham and a few others make their swan song .( Entry fee should now be a fiver and try to fill it ....will be worth see Clifford if nothing else ! ). In fairness they gave good service . Don't know what Micky Newman ,but our goose was cooked after his departure . I see a lot of club football ,and this is as good as it gets personell wise . Would rather we hung around Div 2 for a while longer as I suspect a few hammering coming up but I suppose it is the league and of no real importance . As they say in Disneyland. That's all for now folks ! noluso (Meath) - Posts: 151 - 21/07/2019 19:04:37 2214183 Link 0 |
