Meath V Donegal

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Things are going along nicely. I was starting Conlan v Offaly and maybe Eoin Lynch as well (Who indecently came on in that game and did really when came on under massive pressure. He seems to have disappeared of the match day squad for some reason )To let players that didn't really figure in the league a run. Mc Entee has slowly done this.
Conlan as all but nailed down a starting position.
Harnan is flying Gallagher as well,
Devine and Thomas Mc Govern both done well against Clare.
Shane Walsh got a run and looks good.
It would nice to see Niall kane get a run at some stage next week too.
There is a lot of positives. Championship games is where you can really learn about different players good or bad.
I think we are building nicely. Clare was a must win game we would have been ripped to shreds if lost than game there was massive pressure on Meath win. We got over the line. We can go into Donegal with totally different frame of mind. With nothing to lose.

Conlan done his bit but diff story with donegals corner backs up kicking points will he track or hold that will have to b adressed.there attacking wing backs need to b tied up bodies blocking there runs.james McEntee ryan need them sunday. Great spirit shown sunday will that b enough we will see."
Why would he track? Donegal will always have a man on our full forward line at all times. So if the corner or full back makes a run it's up to a spare outfield player to track his man.

We really should should have a like for like backup on the bench for our forwards
e,g For conlon we should have Nippy O Dwyer from Dunshaughlin
For Newman (POR would of been my choice but he has stepped away) put someone like Robert Ruddy from Senchalstown in ,who could match any FB for strength and could catch 80% of high ball going in around the square (similar to Donaghy)"
I agree that we should have a style of play and then you build your team around that. That means that you have like for like replacements as you would in basketball or soccer. The subs bench should not be a collection of the best remaining players in Meath but the best replacements to implement your style of play. I think Shane Walsh would play a similar role to Newman in any case and that's why he eventually came on.

O Dwyer is too old , hes 35/36 I think

Surely to god you can think of a better target man than Ruddy
Hasnt played Senior for at least 5 - 6 years Id say and he must be near 45

Spare out field player ? If everyone is picking up there own man then there is an overlap this is where donegal strength is.
Most there scores are coming from deep runs from defenders off loading the ball to there scorers Brennan,Gallagher, Murphy etc.im saying if there not tracked its a problem. If conlan not following them or at least holding them up in defense which he hasn't the strength to do.i go back to the Offaly game where they ran at us from defense caused us lots of problems. I know he wasn't stsrted that day but I can see it being problem. Not saying he only one but could b targeted for that scenario to happen.

By "go for it", I mean we shouldn't have any fear of losing.
And I'd say going defensive would probably be the worst decision against Donegal as the likes of Brennan, Murphy and McBrearty (among others) will happily pop over points from way out and we'd have no chance.
An awful Cavan side who were dominated in the Ulster final still managed 2-16. If we can tighten up in defence and actually take our chances when we get inside the 45, I feel we at least can give them a rattle.

It's a long shot (as Donegal's 1/8 odds show), but I'm more hopeful than I was in the run up to the Dublin game where we didn't have a prayer regardless of how we played.

Should have bate them in 2017, should have bate them twice this year already.

Surely we can take it one step further? The lads must surely believe they can take Donegal?

A win would be huge...giving us two shots at making all ireland semis. Imagine a packed house in navan against Kerry for a shot at the semis

Totally agree. Win this and we have a serious chance of making semis. The only negative is I think this is the most difficult of all 3

Excellent achievement getting to Super 8s. I agree with most posters that this is a goal we all all wanted back in January.

We have 3 games against quality opposition to test out our panel and give high quality experience to players and management.

These 3 games should be used as a stepping stone to build on for Division 1 bext spring.

The results of the Super 8 matter little to me so long as the performance is there and we come out respectable. We are crying out for a solid 70 minutes of football since the league campaign.

I fear that 10-15 point beatings will not benefit anyone. But if we are competitive in the 3 games and come up short (a couple of scores) I will be happy looking to 2020.

As for Donegal in Ballybofey it will be a tough outing. They have a quality set up but we haven't been far away from them in games over the last few years which is encouraging. I cant wait for it but the lads need to be fired up and cut out the silly errors and running down cul de sacs.

Again, thrilled we are here and delighted to follow Meath for at least another 3 games and into August. Brilliant.

If we get them on the hop again we have a chance. All the pressure is on them. Team selection and recovery are key. I know they may have pushed on since the league but Fermanagh also ran them fairly close. Good start is critical.

Just listened to james Conlon interview, what a inspiration for every player, a old head on young shoulders, he and none of the team bother with the "crap" from so called supporters, they only care about the real supporter. Keyboard warriors beware. This Meath team and management have no time for them, and rightly so.

Hopefully this works. We are Meath podcasts, every real Meath fan should be listening every week. The guys go to town on some lad in Twitter that said we had beat nothing. It's open it's honest , all the guys contribute at any time, thelads actually have a great insight into the players and are in dressing room always after match, always great listen.

Just admit you went ott over the dub game. And move on. The players everyone of them deserve huge respect for what they have put in and achieved this year. And don't need cheap shots on any social media. They deserve better.
