So It'S Clare

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

If Menton has a good day tomorrow and keeps Brennan quiet Clare may struggle to deliver quality ball. The backs are in good form but key is being disciplined in the tackle as Clare will look for frees to keep the scoreboard ticking. If we have any sort of a substantial lead with 10 minutes to go the backs should be a bit more adventerous and go forward at every opportunity. The problem with this is you need a quality player like Donal Keogan to do it especially against a div 1 team. Attacking as a unit instead of lads like o sullivan blindly running at players will get you nowhere against the like of Donegal and Kerry.

Replying To royaldunne:  "Apart from one highball into Conlon that was a miss hit that he went for , Can you tell me one other?? As the balls into him for majority of game were perfect. To say otherwise is highly inaccurate. He had problems loosing his marker or getting disposed, or actually on one occasion loosing it due to wet ball. It appears that very little people were at the game or relied on spillanes wrong analogies. Very disappointing from a Meath perspective that this is actually seen now as fact. Where it did not happen"
Agreed. Of course there was no plan to kick high balls in the conlon. Come on lads do u seriously think that was a tactic . A bad junior B manager would no kicking high ball into the smallest man on the pitch is madness. Any high balls into him were miss hits , not meant for him or lads panicked under pressure and just lumped a hit and hope in . If anyone genuinely thinks the players were instructed by the management to kick high balls into conlon well then yous are absolutely clueless about football.

Agreed. The blame lies with the players 100%.

Interesting you mention the pitch. Apparently Mayo trained in there counties Hurling champions pitch last week. Which similar in size to the Gaelic grounds in Limerick and the grass it cut different. Where they played Galway last night. Clever thinking on management. Hopefully we will have learned from the wet ground in Croke Park.

So what you are saying our team when under any sort of pressure resort to driving high balls in to our one 5.6 forward in his own up front.
Because we have other options apart from goin side ways backwards??

No harm in a bit of Hassel from Andy ! Players have been too meek to date and need to stand up today
and not be pushed around . The traditional Meath aggressiveness has taken a back seat for too long
Arise !

Not saying it was right but yes that is clearly what happened. Should have gone sideways or backwards instead of doing that but obviously the decision making was poor which happens to players as they go up the levels when the pressure comes on. Absolutely no way they were instructed to kick high ball in to one of the smallest men in inter county football. Anyone who thinks that was a planned tactic is clueless

All the best to the boys today, would be a huge lift for the county to make the Super 8s and we have a good chance today.

But this test is not to be overlooked, we're trying to do something we've never done before and if we're not switched on today then it's game over.

Conditions look perfect so no excuses now.

I am expecting a tough battle but hopefully Meath to pull away in the second half and win by 7 points plus.

We know the Clare midfield are very good. So why are our kick outs being kicked long and playing right into their hands?

Silly

Poor enough performance ! Gave away possesion far too many times.Shane McEntee not up to playing midfield at this Level.McGill Keoghan Menton newman and Conlan were our best performers.Graham Reilly offered nothing when he came on ! Colgans kick outs are killing us ! Harnan did well at 6 and would keep him there ! Good to see that we responded when we were up against it ! Dont see us winning a game in the super 8s ! But hopefully these games bring us on !
Well done to the lads ! I think meath football is back on a upwards curve

Don't care how we did it, we did it. Well done to the team.
Hope Newman is OK. Thought the Clare defender was very reckless and could have easily been sent off.

What I loved about harnan was gary brennan definitely got the better of him early but harnan never dropped the head and went onto really dominate, he's made of the right stuff

Tight, close and uncomfortable just as I thought it would be, firstly the negatives

1) Kickouts are a real issue and under a high ball Colgan doesn't look comfortable
2) Possession given away to cheaply/easily at times and we could have been punished more for it
3) Midfield is not gaining enough primary possession, got a lot of breaking ball in second half but we need more clean possessions

The Positives

1) Only 4 wides and kicked 2-16, huge improvement
2) We have a fantastic half back line
3) Conor McGill continues to grow and impress
4) Mickey Newman's leadership up front
5) James Conlon proving his quality

Just a few of the more obvious points from both sides, we should be proud of this squad today as after the Leinster Final any game was going to be difficult and Clare are no fools and are an improving side, to respond the way we did after the Clare goal was fantastic and the winning of the game was that 5-6 minute period after that Clare goal where we kicked 1-2 to go four up, Clare kept battling as I knew they would, they done the same v Kerry in Munster but we worked equally hard and got our rewards, we will learn an awful lot from the next three games which is a fantastic opportunity for these players, no pressure on no one expects us to do anything and we have nothing to lose and that is often when we have played our best. Management and players should embrace the challenge of the next few weeks and use it as an opportunity to learn and develop, no better preparation for Division 1 next year could we have, well done all you have given us something to shout about again.
