On paper, it looks a easiest draw but Clare will be battle hardened and have an excellent mid sector and also a very good free taker. Will it be port Laoise for this one??? seanboylansdonkey (Meath) - Posts: 5 - 01/07/2019 09:14:46 2203261 Link 0 |
There's no point beating around the bush on this, Clare are the one we wanted. Yes they are a decent side, play some attractive football and have made great strides as a so-called weaker county over the last few years - but compared to Tyrone and Mayo they were the best option for us and for a nice change we got the luck of the draw. One could argue that a tie against Tyrone/Mayo would focus the minds after a bruising Leinster final. At the end of the day there is a huge amount at stake for Meath in this round and whatever the less difficult pathway for progression to the Super 8s is I'll take that. Of course Clare will need to be taken as serious as any other outfit at this stage, they have gotten this far on merit and well done to them. What's intriguing is that we are the team they probably fancied the most so both counties should be happy this morning! men_of_49 (Meath) - Posts: 1962 - 01/07/2019 09:35:04 2203281 Link 0 |
we can make this out to be a hard assignment for the lads, but realistically if we dont win this by 6 plus points we are not up to much. we are a division 1 team. Clare were lucky to stay in division 2. overthehill72 (Meath) - Posts: 334 - 01/07/2019 09:35:20 2203282 Link 0 |
It will certainly be a tough one but without doubt it offers the best chance of making the super 8's! As for venue, Portlaois would certainly make sense travel wise! Hopefully a big crowd will make it to wherever it is and get behind the lads!

The more I think of it the more I see a double header in Thurles

Yeah massive crowd needed, best draw possible and it's not close, 3 goals at start of the year were Division 1 Leinster final Super 8s Let's get behind Andy and the team now after a rough outing the last day redser123 (Meath) - Posts: 306 - 01/07/2019 10:31:45 2203352 Link 2 |
Our league form suggests we should win, however they're coming off the back of a moral boosting win, whereas we suffered a crushing defeat, that could level things off a little bit. If we can re-focus and McEntee can re-motivate the squad then we're in with a good chance, but if we don't turn up and perform then we'll need lady luck to get past Clare. Clare very strong around the midfield area with Brennan High fielding . If we break even enough there we have a great chance to win. Bear10 (Meath) - Posts: 328 - 01/07/2019 11:46:38 2203438 Link 0 |
I expect our defence to be in a reasonably positive space in terms of how they performed the last day so it really boils down to whether we can convert our chances up front. The first 15 minutes will be critical - kick a few scores and we should motor from there. Miss the first few and it could be difficult. If I was involved in the management, I'd be telling the lads to make sure on the first few attacks i.e. don't be trying hail mary kicks from 40/50 yards out. I would have the lads running really hard at Clare in the early stages to give ourselves plenty of options to pop a pass and / or win a free. You'd imagine Clare might try and defend in numbers to make us shoot from distance so we will need to attack with numbers. Also, no offence to Conlon but I would start with a couple of the bigger lads like Tobin to try and win ball and punch some holes in their defence. gwanyagudthing (Meath) - Posts: 88 - 01/07/2019 11:59:40 2203454 Link 0 |
Laois have home advantage in the Hurling against Cork so a double header outside of portlaoise won't happen. Id image portlaoise wouldn't be big enough for a double header.

Hopefully it's a double header of Laois v Dublin (hurling) and Meath v Clare in Portlaoise. Best draw possible and I'd have it as a 50/50 match. This is our all Ireland final. This is the match everyone wanted to win at the start of the year to achieve our goals. Jack_Goff (Meath) - Posts: 2920 - 01/07/2019 13:02:44 2203509 Link 12 |
From reading different gaa message boards it seems everyone is writing us off after the Leinster final, which might work to our advantage if we get over Clare. We've beaten Clare 3 times under Andy so that's something at least even if it is only league games. LoyalRoyal (None) - Posts: 414 - 01/07/2019 13:48:50 2203556 Link 0 |
We have a really good chance here to make the super 8s. I would play the same forwards that played vs Dublin in this game to bring confidence levels back up as we all know they all had an off day. The big question is have the team got over the Dublin match and are they ready for Clare , We have beaten Clare in the League the last 3 years handy enough but come Championship Clare have pushed Kildare, Mayo, Armagh close over the last few years and have beaten Laois , Offaly and Roscommon . We need to be fully focused in this one . SheridansTry (Meath) - Posts: 168 - 01/07/2019 14:17:36 2203593 Link 0 |

I wouldn't be starting the same forwards as the last day just to build their confidence back up. No use their confidence being built up if we're out of the championship. Start the lads who they think will get the win v Clare and if that's the same 6 forwards so be it but if its not i wouldn't be worrying about knocking lads confidence by dropping them. This is big boy football not u12 development league

0 excuses. 2017 we beat them 3-19 to 1-13 in the league, 2018 we beat them 0-21 to 0-7, 2019 we bet them 1-12 to 1-7. That's a 12, 14 and 5 with two of them being away. We are a much better team and must beat them LeitrimRoyal99 (Meath) - Posts: 833 - 01/07/2019 15:08:22 2203644 Link 12 |
