Meath V Dublin

We all know how good Dublin are, the big disappointment yesterday was our performance. The forward play was pathetic, and a high percentage of the cock ups were of our own making....thought our fullback line was excellent throughout tho.

Replying To dunboynelad:  "Regarding Conlon as there seems to be a lot of chat on this, it reminds me of when Joey Wallace played in a Leinster final against them as well, identical stature and just eaten up. The only difference I would suggest is we had a fair selection of forwards then, whereas now we are struggling up there which was always my worry this year. Ciaran Whelan rightfully pointed out if our attacking hopes are pinned on a kid yet to develop physically, it is as much a reality check as anything else in what we have available to us. We performed admirably all year and made huge strides given what we had to work with, built on a really solid backbone and ethos that everyone bought in to, though yesterday a lack of class up there was badly exposed. The new crop of forwards can't come through quick enough though realistically that will not happen over night. I should add I also felt sorry for Newman up there, he never hid and stood out as a leader at times when others were lost at sea.

I felt sorry for the defense as well. The first half was a hell of an effort there, even more so considering there was no blanket, we went man for man and trusted the tenacity and intelligence of McGill, Lavin, etc. Better teams than us haven't come close to containing their forwards in that way, their efforts deserved more than to only have a point on the scoreboard. That was demoralising. On that note I was disappointed for Andy, I see it being remarked he looked stunned and the rest, if I had a team prepared to that level and have the hard part done in completely nullifying their machine of an attack, I'd quite rightfully be pulling my hair out when we can't carry out the absolute basics like kicking 20 yard frees to capitalise. There is only so much management can do in these situations, yet any blame and fall will only ever lead one way.

Anyway that's where the frustration ends, ultimately it was a half chance missed where not everyone done themselves justice on the big stage, but there's potentially bigger days ahead. There are only 2/3 teams in the country that won't take a circa 15 point beating off Dublin in Croker as of now, that 2/3 could even be generous to the chasing pack. Important to remember only Donegal and Dublin have beat us this year, to my eyes the best two teams in the country. Andy was right in saying beforehand that yesterday won't determine our year whatever the result - it's up to everyone to dust it off now and ensure that be true. Tyrone last year and Donegal the year beforehand showed there is plenty of steel in this team, I expect another reaction for what will be the biggest championship game we have had in many a year."
For information.Joey wallace only got a few minutes against them in the 2014 Leinster Final. You are talking about things that never happened

Round 4 open draw. Anyone can play anyone regardless if they have already played each other in championship this year

Ruairi O Caolain better than all our current existing half forwards. Need to get him in asap. Maybe Newman is only forward near required level at the moment and we are very suspect in goals and midfield. Encouragingly our backline is decent and maybe something to build on.

Again it is not a case of get him in. He is there on the senior panel of 30+

I'm not blaming him for the penalty now the pace of the shot would have beaten any keeper"
Ok, I taught he got a hand to it my bad. But I think he did ok over all. He was under a lot of pressure. One kick went over the line and another bad pass lead to a point. But what I think what people forget years goal keepers would lash it up the field and god knows probably more than half of them came back at you.
With these short kick outs they are high risk, make a slight mistake and you can get punished. Yes sometimes kick outs go to opposition and go over the side line. But its not just Colgan that makes these errors in any game you will see the same from nearly every team. A keeper on kick outs depends on the players in front of him to create space and options.

Unless there was a change to the rules since last year, repeat fixtures will be avoided in round 4 meaning we can't draw Laois/Offaly. Not good news from our perspective!

The worst thing and most frustrating was we didn't play a bad game at all 1st half, if we had of registered the scores and missed chances we had we would have been going in 2nd half 1 point ahead and that would have rattled the dubs. We stopped them from scoring and we defended well. The only way the Dubs could stop us was fouling and the ref closed his eyes to an awful lot out there yesterday.
To say James Conlon isnt ready for Senior is not correct. We can criticise alot of players there yesterday and there is no point singling one of them out. Even our most experienced players didn't show up yesterday. Ben Brennan missing the most handiest of frees, Graham Reilly been totally off target, Cillian O Sullivan looking lost...sure the list goes on. As a team we IMO played well. Brush ourselves down and get ready for super 8's where hopefully we can redeem ourselves.

Rescue ??
A sad day for Meath football and our sideline can take a lot of the blame .
How he thought Conlon could do a job inside mainly on his own is amazing all the ball we had and we never tried to test the Dublin fullback with direct ball !! What was Newman at again we won more ball yesterday around the middle than I expected turned over ball but then went sideways we had no one inside to kick it too ??
As for our kickouts after 3 years in charge we are still all over the place hit and hope the majority of times .
We played better than the final score suggests but the same failings continue in every game which is disappointing you'll get away with them against poor div 2 & 3 teams but not div 1 teams .
Give Mcentee credit for putting a bit of steel back in the Jersey but a long way from been rescued

#1 concern for me going forward is that we have consistently struggled with the blanket defence / sweeper system. We had been making progress in the last year with more of a running game but for that to succeed against the better teams you need a couple of physically strong forwards who can occupy the backs and create gaps and also a reliable free taker. We currently have neither which means that we will continue to struggle against teams that can defend well. We are conceding a lot less overall this year and credit to the team and management for improving on that. Problem is we don't have the players up front to complete the jigsaw and unless we find them, we will remain a top 8-10 team. I'd say we will see Reilly, Brennan and Conlon drop back to the bench the next day and Tobin, Devine and O'Reilly (who are more suited to the game we are trying to play) come in. That gives us some impact forwards to bring in as opposition legs start to tire. Hopefully Harnan will be back too.

Do the management have any faith in our panel it doesn't look like it from what I seen.
Backs is sorted lets get forwards we need men now not boys.

Conlon is a great prospect.

What do people expect if the tactic was to put a fast young lad inside and kick high balls over his head .

Replying To Aloblack:  "I'm certainly not saying put big immobile lads in there but there's balance between the 2. Unfortunately look at the modern inter county game. And ur right about the top teams not having many slow players. But they also don't have many lads who are 5ft nothing and 10 stone. If he was small and well built and very strong I'd be more optimistic. I really like watching him play but just worry for him at Division 1 level and lets say super 8 level. In saying that ur bang on about their not being too many alternatives playing the county."
Brian Hanlon Kells

this may not turn out to be a bad thing what happened , as spillane pointed out we have lost against Donegal and Dublin this year, the manor of yesterday's defeat was horrible to watch when in reality we were only outclassed for about 12 minutes, i look forward to the draw and the response from the players

Positive news today with the qualifier draw. The 4 best teams drawing each other. This is huge.

Kildare vs Tyrone
Mayo vs Armagh
Westmeath vs Clare
Offaly vs Laois

We have a 50/50 chance of getting the winners of
Westmeath vs Clare
Offaly vs Laois

I'll be up on the hill of Tara praying when next Mondays draw is made. I wouldn't write off Armagh or Kildare either who we shouldn't fear.

I know we are in a dark place now but look at the positives. We have a great chance of making the Super 8's.

I didn't say there was no alternatives. I said there wasn't too many. Not sure what hanlons story is. Has he ever got a run with meath? Is he mobile enough? He shooting the lights out in club football at the moment anyway and is an excellent free taker

There was about 3 or 4 good balls kicked to him about chest height which any player would handle. But the Dublin defender got a hand on him Everytime and he didn't have the strength to hold it. Was very little high ball kicked into him.

Nobody is doubting he is a great prospect but he just mightnt have the strength for top inter county teams at the minute.

Brian o'Hanlon, P.O'Rourke and P'McKeever are the three best forwards in Meath by a country mile.

For various reasons none are on the panel.
