Meath V Carlow

Replying To Jack_Goff:  "I agree regarding the warm up in Tullamore vs Kildare. Shot ourselves in the foot big time.

I've seen teams before basically do stretches before matches and a very light run. League games where they were obviously training very hard leading up to it. The point is running a 5k before the match isn't necessary.

I didnt have a problem with it vs Ofally. And I'm sure the team have been training very hard with the aim to peak for the super 8's. The main thing is we won a match we'd have lost another year. I'm expecting a reaction from the team Saturday week and a another win."
Can't disagree with that.
Look I'm old fashioned, I don't think these vigorous warmups before a game is necessary, and can often be counterproductive. I'll give you a example think it was 12 in Croke Park I know it was against Kildare we came out with a under pressure banty in charge we did a normal enough warm up, and quite a bit of shooting, mcgeeney had Kildare bouncing off big orange foam and doing extreme drills. Kildare couldn't hit the side of a hay shed during game, we were 5/1 to win that match (I made a fortune) . I'm not a fan of lots of warming up.

Don't want to create another thread so I thought I'd ask here.

Does anybody know how many underage games development coaches meath have in both hurling and football?

Who goes midfield saturday
Who picks up Bren Murphy
Runners from deep seem to hurt us our forwards seem to b slow getting back to help out in defense.
Will we change goalie?
What's our options on all the scenarios listed.

Rumour has it the squad had a very intensive training weekend in Fota the week before the Offaly game which included that challenge match against Kerry, "McEntee ran the sh**e out of them" was how I was told, mightn't be wholly accurate but if they did have a fairly hard workout it may explain the seemingly lacklustre performance v Offaly, time will tell I suppose. Personally I would like to see warm ups that just concentrate on kick outs, passing and kicking scores, get the simple things right should be the priority at all times.

Andy will change as little as possible, it seems to be his style.
Midfield will be Menton & Shane McEntee - if Shane is injured it will be Adam Flanagan

The question regarding a goalie change does not deserve a response

Menton and McEntee - Flanagan if Mcentee is injured.
Nobody will be picking up Murphy as hes suspended.
Colgan starts in goal.

Silly questions

Murphy gets very easily rattled. If playing, I'd put Ronan Ryan on him.

Would stick with Colgan for now but I'd not be too upset if Brennan came in.

Would agree with playing Ryan. He was exceptional throughout the league and it was very harsh dropping him. I personally would prefer him at 4, thoughts?

Lads Ronan Ryan is a great player but he is small and is not going to be man marking a 6 ft 4 towering midfielder. Where is the logic there

So questioning our options in our clear weaknesses is silly questions.you are not or never have been involved in picking or organising a team with that reply.

The idea of marking Murphy is to stop his runs from deep and his influence on the game generally , stopping him fielding the ball from his own kick outs is a team effort. Hence you don't need to be 6ft 4 to mark him in open play- need to be tenacious, fit and disciplined. Not sure we will man mark him but Laois did a number on him in league final last year.

Agree with switching McMahon to the wing and putting Brennan in the center I though this should have happened early in the Offaly game .
Can't have Colgan in goal his kick outs were poor against Fermanagh , Donegal and Offaly might get away with it against Carlow but won't against a better side .

Apparently it was some serious training in cork. Not saying that was the reason for such a below par performance but it can't have helped.
And I'd agree re warming up too. Keep it simple.

Not a bad looking team at all. Conlon could do very well in the corner. Still have dardis, biggy (who needs to seriously up his fitness levels). Campion, Devine really thought lynch did exceptional when he came on last day and I would not be adverse to him starting

Blow for Carlow as Turlough O'Brien, Stephen Poacher and Brendan Murphy lose suspension appeals

Carlow's prospects of beating Meath in Saturday's Leinster football quarter-final in Portlaoise have been hit with a serious setback after the latest attempt to have manager, Turlough O'Connor, coach, Stephen Poacher and midfielder, Brendan Murphy cleared for duty failed.

The GAA's Central Appeals Committee (CAC) last night dismissed appeals by the trio against lengthy suspensions, imposed following an investigation into incidents after Carlow's one-point defeat by Down in a Division 3 Allianz League game in mid-March.

O'Brien was suspended for 20 weeks while Poacher and Murphy were each banned for 12 weeks. They took their case all the way to the Disputes Resolution Authority (DRA), who sent it back for hearing to the CAC.

It was heard last night, but brought no relief for the trio. Carlow still have the option of challenging the CAC decision before the DRA, but given the tight timescale it's thought unlikely they will take the matter any further.
