Question from a non-Meath man: What is the biggest rivalry in Meath going back the years? The one that stands out above all others. Scealta (Clare) - Posts: 17 - 17/04/2019 20:15:30 2179357 Link 1 |

Judging by how upset some posters on here get when theres a ratoath player picked to play for meath i would say ratoath v everyone. Personally I think pats v colmcilles in north meath is a bitter one. Royal.Legend (Meath) - Posts: 461 - 18/04/2019 11:08:41 2179418 Link 0 |

For example in clare newmarket clarecastle is still seen as the most powerful rivalry even though it fizzled out 30 odd years ago. There was a lot of interest in it from outside the county because it was a tense, often bitter, lots of humour too - would there be one like that in Meath that would stand out ahead of other fleeting or minor local rivalries?

Sure Meath is a big oule county. It's the second biggest in Leinster after Wexford. Anytime I am driving west and I go through the Royal County it takes me about an hour to go through it. Traditionally in Louth the Newtown Blues v Cooley Kickhams would be the big one. These two are the most successful clubs in Louth. It is North Louth v South Louth and Urban club v Rural club. No two clubs have faced each more in Louth Senior finals than the Blues v Cooley. The Blues are the most successful club in Louth with 22 Senior titles. St Mary's and Dundalk Young Ireland's are next on the list with 11 Senior titles each and then Cooley is next on the list with 9 titles. Cooley have not won it since 1990 and are currently spending their second season in the Inter Championship. The Blues are going for the three in a row in Louth this year. The last club to this in the Wee County were Cooley in 1970's.

Great idea for a thread interesting to see some rivalries you'd maybe unaware of in different parts of the county. Meathmaverick (Meath) - Posts: 95 - 19/04/2019 10:11:33 2179544 Link 1 |
Royaldunne v Jack Goff is another big rivalry in Meath. OLLIE (Louth) - Posts: 12224 - 19/04/2019 11:14:47 2179550 Link 3 |
There were some tough hurling matches between Killyon and Kildalkey, none more fierce and to show that all is fair in love and war the team up together and kick with Ballivor. MillerX (Meath) - Posts: 742 - 19/04/2019 14:16:16 2179573 Link 2 |
There's a few rivalries around Kells. Gaeil Cholmcille being the large, urban club tend to not get much plaudits from the teams just outside town, they dont meet the rural clubs very often and as a result the Gaels are often seen as being out on their own. The Carnaross v. Moynalty, Moynalty v. St. Michaels, Drumbaragh v. Kilmainham derbies are all very localised but can be hotly contested at all levels. All of the above clubs along with many players from St. Ultans and Cortown and Ballinlough/Kilskyre would have went to school in Kells town and know each other. Great post - i think o'mahonys v Skryne sounds like the big one even if its not what it was. These things are hard to gauge but if there are more stories from one rivalry than any other, both were in the running for titles that will do. it would have caught the imagination and endured. Some of the rivalries you see only last a few years. Scealta (Clare) - Posts: 17 - 19/04/2019 17:13:43 2179592 Link 0 |
It takes awhile to go across Meath especially from East to West the roads are bad. The M3 and M2/N2 Run from north to south nobody bothered with a decent East to West road. I dont think many people in Louth are mad about the Blues that's yibe I get :) I think with rivalry its generally biggest between neighboring Villages, towns or county's. I always think of a episode of Family Guy, they did a episode in Ireland and some says 'He is from one village over so I hate he guts " I think that sums it up :) . I wonder dose local rivalry stem from faction fighting where villages used to beat the lard out of each other with sticks. Something that I think the English rule used to encourage to keep everyone from uniting and fighting the common enemy. Lets blame the English anyway :) bobkarlgees (Meath) - Posts: 1192 - 20/04/2019 09:36:00 2179639 Link 0 |
Although they came together at some age levels, you would always get a bruising match ( literally ) between ballinabrackey and clonard. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 17035 - 21/04/2019 07:56:55 2179708 Link 0 |
