Is this a thread about the upcoming game against Cork or another paean for glory days in the distant past? bert09 (Meath) - Posts: 1668 - 20/02/2019 20:40:51 2166675 Link 6 |
did James Mac play for UCC tonight seadog54 (Meath) - Posts: 1432 - 20/02/2019 21:30:17 2166687 Link 11 |
I see mcentee wasnt playing in sigerson cup. Won't be playing against cork. Thought lynch played well the last day when he got his shot. bert09 (Meath) - Posts: 1668 - 20/02/2019 21:31:51 2166688 Link 0 |

It probably depends on who might come back into contention from the likes of Harnan, Flanagan and Tobin. If Harnan is back available then he might slot in at 5. If Tobin or Flanagan are fit again then they could come in at midfield with Shane McEntee dropping back. Eoin Lynch did well when he came in against Armagh so he is another option. That would probably mean Keogan slipping across to 5. Another half back on the panel is Gavin McCoy and there's not much between him and Lynch. Niall Hickey who has been used as a wing forward in his appearances to date is usually a back or midfielder for his club so if he is back fit he might be a left field choice to replace James. Of course the reigning player of the year while a completely different style of player is also an option. jackhackett (Meath) - Posts: 765 - 20/02/2019 22:18:45 2166698 Link 0 |
A pity about James, he's flying at the minute. Flood probably deserves a shot at some point in the league after his exploits with UCC. UsernameInvalid (Meath) - Posts: 126 - 20/02/2019 22:25:47 2166699 Link 0 |
Thats a big loss, he is the type of player not easily replaced. really brings game to opposition. seadog54 (Meath) - Posts: 1432 - 20/02/2019 22:28:31 2166702 Link 11 |
Thats my fault. I took the thread of in a different direction. I take full responsibility for that. I wouldnt mention the past anymore on this thread in any great detail. This is my last message on Cork match. Last word on match. J McEntee is a massive loss. He has become our most important player. Move keoghan to wing back or Harnan or Lynch at center back. Keoghan best position is wing back. He moved there v Armagh in second half and played there v Roscommon in league last year. And on both occasions had a big impact. We need two modern attacking wing backs. All the top teams have quality wing backs. So 5 Keoghan 6 Harnan/ Lynch 7 Kane half back line wud be best . Hopefully J McEntee is not a long term injury. Since he moved to wing back v Down last year he has played 8 games there and in about 7 of them he has been contender for man of the match. All the top teams have strong half backs. Half backs who can attack defend win breaking ball and play consistently well. This is what lee Keegan James Mcarthy Tomas O Se Jordan have done. McEntee is not at that level. But Colm Boyle or Andrew Thompson or John Small , McEntee is getting to that level. And I know this might seem like an over the top thing to say. But for me not since Martin O Connell I have seen a Meath wing back have such impact on Meath team. We have had good man marking defensive half backs in the last few years , but attacking wing back who have played consistently well , there has-been very few. I have felt half back line has been a problem area for twenty years. Not that we havent had some good half backs. But we havent really had three half backs in the same position year in year out. The last time we did was P Reynold jnr E McManus C Coyle / H Traynor between 96 to 99. The two greatest half back lines in Meath football history were K Foley L Harnan M O Connell between 86 and 91 and P Collier B Cunningham P Reynlods Snr 1966 -67. For me J McEntee Keoghan Kane as an attacking unit is as good as I have seen play for Meath in last twenty years. Only class of 86 and 91 were better overall. We need to play these three guys in every game in those three positions for next 2 to 3 years. They will improve, the team will improve. The half back line is the most important line in modern football. So many of the best footballers play in the half backs now. Players like Keegan and Dublins Mcarthy would have been half forwards in the 90s. The best footballers in the 60s and 70s and 80s played in full forward line. There was just three back against 3 forwards. Many of the backs were more concentrating on knocking the head of the defender then defending. Best players in full forward line then eg Sheedy Sean O Neill J Keaveny C O Rourke F McGuigan B Rock M Connor. In the 90s you had better man markers in full back kine eg O Malley Fay Lochart Scullion M Reilly . So there was less room in the full forward line. So best players were in half forwards in 90s eg Giles Donnellan Geraghty Blaney McHugh Fallon Farrell NcNichol Ciaran McDonald. In 00s players like Declan Sullivan B McGuigan and O McConville continued that thread. In this decade the half forward line is full of players. You have two sweepers maybe two or three forwards and two midfielders funnelling back meaning the half forward line, it is hard to create space when team is attacking. The space is in the half back line when a team is attacking. You need fast quick attacking runners in ur half back line now. Twenty years ago you needed man markers in ur your half back line. Thr odd players like Paul Curran and Sean Og de Paor attacked. But that is all change. Now all half backs must attack. Meaths half forward line in 90s of Dowd Giles Geraghty , if playing now would be a half back line . And if Dublins Mcarthy Sullivan and Mcccaffrey were playing in 90s they would be a half forward line. Of course in every era midfielders and full backs are hugely important. And quality inside forwards were and are always hugely important. The point Im making half backs in 80s and 90s didnt pass the half line. They main job was to defend. The best player on a team in 80s and 90s was rarely a wing back. Now half back line is where attacks begin it where you break the opponents first line of defence. If u dont have quality half back line u wouldnt become a top team. We have a good one now. Thats why hopefully McEntee who has been over best half back , actually has been our best player since last April , thats why it so important he is only out for a short term. If he is long term injury we might be ok on Saturday but overall it cud really effect our season in a negative way. It wud probaly mean that Keoghan wud have move to 5 and we then need to find a quality centre back to replace the great Donal keoghan. Yeah, its a big loss if James is out, But on the other hand we have solid options here Eoin Lynch and Gavin McCoy is two that could slot in. I was impressed we these so far this year.

Huge loss if James is out. Our best player this year imo. Not easily replaced , but we have both mccoy and lynch who could fill the role for cork game. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 17035 - 21/02/2019 10:51:16 2166742 Link 0 |
Absolute disaster if he's out IMO. Yes we have solid options like lynch and McCoy to come in but neither of them or anyone else available to fill that roll possess the ball carrying ability of mcentee. That part of his game has been phenomenonal so far in the league and I don't have the stats of course but I'd imagine he's been the source of a hell of a lot of our attacking moves and scores we've got from him carrying the ball forward. He draws defenders in and creates space for others with those piercing runs thru the middle. Hopefully he makes it.

Yep the running role is where he will be missed most. Let's hope he is back for Kildare game

I see there was a Micheal Flood playing for UCC last night. Has he ever played underage or Junior for Meath. Anybody know anything about him. I have to admit I know 0 about him. He must be decent enough to start for a Sigerson winner though LeitrimRoyal99 (Meath) - Posts: 833 - 21/02/2019 15:38:11 2166799 Link 11 |
Played on the juniors the last couple of years I am nearly sure. Good player sam1996 (Meath) - Posts: 436 - 21/02/2019 16:19:35 2166806 Link 0 |
He is a very good player but our best player is the centre back and the guy who against Armagh carried the ball into easy scoring range before being fouled for the two frees that changed the game in the second half, when is was beginning to slip away.

Great player to no doubt, but mcentee has been more influential this year imo.
