Fair play to all who travelled. This is a massive chance to take a big scalp. I think can do it with a bit a luck. Up the royals bobkarlgees (Meath) - Posts: 1192 - 02/02/2019 17:43:01 2161697 Link 2 |

Good game so far big second half ahead Richieq (Meath) - Posts: 3590 - 02/02/2019 19:54:22 2161730 Link 13 |
If you had of told me 2/3 weeks ago that it'd take a 6/7 point turnaround in 10 minutes for Donegal to beat Meath id have taken it with two hands. Bitterly dissapointed all the same. Ulster opposition is like Meath kryptonite, same old story, just couldnt win the match over the 70 minutes. Just not good enough when the chips are down. Onward to the next one. Ahh lads, I don't care how well we played, we had the game won. It is like Tyrone last year,Donegal in championship the year before. We need to win one of these games. The boost it would give the team would be something else. But we concede a goal we never should have and the heads drop. It would sicken you. Armagh next week is now an enormous task to try and lift the spirits for again LeitrimRoyal99 (Meath) - Posts: 833 - 02/02/2019 20:49:46 2161744 Link 14 |
Agree. The Ulster teams always have the edge on us sadly. We played well though but a massive chance missed tonight with a Donegal team that were missing a good few starters. Like you said on to the next one

Third time in three years we're pipped at the finish by resilient Ulster teams in games we could've won. Donegal twice and Tyrone once. The saving grace is that we're only two games into the league instead of a last gasp qualifier in the championship. It won't pay to sledge the players for allowing a 1-3 turnaround, we just move on and keep trucking. The season is only starting and there are good signs already. Armagh next in Navan. Another Ulster quagmire to slog through. Brilliant.

I just hope that we don't regret this evening when the final table emerges. But to try and keep the glass half open Donegal are everybody's favourite to be promoted and we are still there but we have to learn to keep a lead when a game is closing. Firstly fair play to any Meath supporter who travelled on a night like this. ROYALOPTIMIST (Meath) - Posts: 178 - 02/02/2019 21:28:42 2161771 Link 5 |
That was sickening, a game we definitely should have got something from, the goal was a game changer and gave momentum to Donegal they otherwise would never have got, we were in complete control up to that point and indeed could have been further ahead than 4 points. We done so many things good tonight, as good as I've seen things done for a long time which makes coming away empty handed all the more bitter. Still if we get a win next Sunday we are in a good place and we are more than capable of beating Armagh, replicate the positives of tonight and improve the shooting and we will win, tonight could be a big learning curve. We do this almost every year in the league. We'll probably finish third and this is why we don't get promoted. A few years ago we bottled it against donegal in donegal too. A point up and a minute left. Meath had an easy tap over to go 2 up and they went for goal. Donegal equalised with the last kick and that was why we didn't get promoted. Meath will never get back to Div 1 at this rate keeper made a right balls of it. Jack_Goff (Meath) - Posts: 2920 - 02/02/2019 22:01:36 2161790 Link 14 |
Would not be too hard on Meath tonight, yes we should have won, but going on radio commentary we played some of best football in quite a while and were undone by a freak goal, had a few chances near end to get draw. Hopefully lads can put dissapointment behind them and continue with improvement against Armagh next week. A win and we are back up and running. Fair play to the hardy souls who made the journey. seadog54 (Meath) - Posts: 1432 - 02/02/2019 22:03:08 2161792 Link 13 |
Even though im extremely disappointed with the result & the way we lost it, there are some very good positive points. I dont agree that that was Donegal's 2nd team. In my opinion: McGinley is as good a Patton and could start no problem. Ward, 1st choice McCole will be only changed to accommodate Neil McGee Ban Gallagher 1st choice McHugh 1st choice Doherty maybe replaced by Leo McLoone or Paul Brenann Morrison would be removed for Frank McGlynn McFadden 1st choice Langan move to wing forward to accommodate McNailais O'Donnell replaced by Langan who moves to accommodate McNialais Thompson 1st choice McGonagle maybe Eoin or Mark McHugh starts. Reilly McBrearty 1st choice Mcelhinney obviously Murphy starts Jamie Brenann 1st choice Therefore only 5 or 6 starters missing. But all are good options to play come championship. i think looking at your analysis one could safely say its a second string team. However lets just say it was an under strength Donegal team, and I suppose the point then is that even allowing for the fact that the game was in Donegal, we could not take advantage. That in itself is not going to define our season but it does show where we are at, at the moment. ROYALOPTIMIST (Meath) - Posts: 178 - 02/02/2019 23:38:18 2161815 Link 2 |
You are correct that was far from a second string Donegal team, it's good that we are out next weekend again, a minimum of 4 points from the first 3 games is what would be needed to be a promotion contender and we have every chance of achieving that midway target, before that goal I was seriously impressed with our performance and there are genuine positives to build on.

Donegal have a much stronger squad than us to be fair, probably the best in the division. I'm fact they were missing 10 players that played against Dublin in the championship last year and that's not including Paddy McBrearty. Its a tough result to take having led most of the way but I'm confident we'll get the win we badly need against Armagh. summerof09 (Meath) - Posts: 237 - 03/02/2019 01:39:34 2161837 Link 0 |

Awake. With very little sleep, at least the young one got some sleep on way home, the whole journey back I couldn't figure out how we lost that match. I tossed and turned all night. I am awake for past hour and still can't believe we didn't win. I don't do moral victories, so I'll take a stab at a few things that let us down, one when the frees weren't going over from the 40+mtr line Andy should have given instructions to play it short , instead of Newman persistence with it. That goal? Was calamitous , however these things happen in games , just keep doing what we were doing , instead everyone's head dropped, the system went to pieces it was like we were back in the bad old days, coughing up possession, taking snap shots . We went from a coherent well trained disciplined team , to a bunch of individuals with no team ethics who couldn't figure out what to do. That is the main problem, the inability to keep focused, Jesus ,o Reilly had a shot to draw game that I would have put over , and he somehow managed to miss it, again that might have settled the team. Anyone saying that was donegal second team are talking through their rear end. Maybe 4 missing probably no more than us. We lost a game that we were clearly the better team in, and that is hard to take. But we must dust ourselves down and beat Armagh , then 4/6 will have been a good start. I don't see any other teams that we should worry about if we play like we did for the 60 mins of this match, we should be promoted. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 17035 - 03/02/2019 08:34:19 2161858 Link 3 |
