When is the first round of these due to kick off? Are we expecting a plan of the first few weeks of the season to be released soon? Belt (Meath) - Posts: 205 - 02/01/2019 14:53:24 2155465 Link 0 |
Probably last weekend in January or first weekend in February, Thought fixtures would be released on the website this week.

I would imagine the quality of games were not great yesterday considering the weather conditions, and the fact that teams are only back training just over two weeks and probably less for some. Leagues in other counties like Dublin do not start until March, why do we insist in Meath on starting so early in horrendous weather conditions and when teams are not fit to play games? January and February in Ireland have been the worst months for horrendous weather for a long time now, and yet we start up our leagues in the middle of it? It would make much more sense for the club scene to run from March to November where the weather in the months of October/November and even December have been ideal for football. Then give the players December and January to re charge the batteries as two months away from the game is more than enough as any more time away is detrimental to players individual development and the team suffers as a result. It feels like the county board don't give two s***s what the games are like as long as they are played and out of the way. BigJoe14 (Meath) - Posts: 565 - 28/01/2019 10:54:40 2160301 Link 3 |
Would make total sense but that would not work for the duel clubs. Unlike dublin that you use as an example, where the majority of duel clubs have the large numbers to stick to one code, and allow fixtures for both codes to be ran off on the same weekend. But in meath Most of the duel clubs and indeed the smaller clubs in the county are backboned by a considerable amount of duel code players. Then when you take into consideration the county representives from each code and having to fulfill those fixtures too, it leaves a very small window for the leagues to be ran off. Personally i would like to see the leagues disbanded and the championship extended into a larger competition. Why not split the county in half norht/south or east west or even for sections. Let all the teams play each other home and away even and then play off for semis. I think in Galway they run this sort of set up but i do agree the leagues dont help being ran off so early and just extends an already long year for the average duel clubman. all just my opinion Irish_downunder (Meath) - Posts: 476 - 28/01/2019 12:52:49 2160366 Link 0 |
I don't think the duel player aspect would have to change much from what it is now. Just move everything forward to March and end in November/December. There are less hurling games to be played as well.

In Dublin the league and championship are never played on the same weekend. They are always played separate weekends. Do away with the leagues ?? and expand the championship ??are you gan mad. What do you want a 18 game championship ????? most ridiculous post I have ever seen

This is the way that it used to be operated and players have no interest in playing league after they have been knocked out of the championship. The way that it is structured now is best for the players, once they get knocked out of the championship they are finished until whenever time that club starts back training. In most cases players will take a few weeks off themselves and then get back into doing their own work anyway. Regarding starting the league in March, teams would be back training in Jan anyway and playing challenge matches and then games would be getting held up at the end waiting for a team still involved in the championship to finish off. Now based on the planner and how it opperated last year, leagues will be finished prior to the championship re starting thus allowing what I mentioned above, once out of championship your season is over. Works well for me. Regading the pitches, there is not a massive difference in playing matches in November or December and end of January into Feb. Majority of pitches will be heavy and a decent covering of grass. juicy (Meath) - Posts: 384 - 28/01/2019 16:19:34 2160460 Link 0 |
Your right juicy far better have it done and dusted the old way seen walk over after walk over as teams that had nothing to play for pulled out Yesterday was 27th Jan so other than 4 days players had for the most part November December and January off and most clubs back out training before new years day Brownepat (Meath) - Posts: 463 - 28/01/2019 20:43:00 2160540 Link 0 |
I agree that the leagues should be finished before they resume the championship so this is a good thing. One thing I would switch though is to play the feis/tailteann Cup as the first few games of the year and start the a leagues after the cups are finished similar to how the o Byrne Cup is run. Its always hard to gauge where teams are for the first few rounds of the league, Teams are at different levels in preparation in terms of time spent on the pitch. I think the change last year was to try something new with the Feis Cup i.e. play it as you get knocked out of Championship. Only thing i can think of is that it has something to do with getting the leagues finished before championship, someone can correct me if im wrong on this, but i believe the finals werent played until October time in 17 juicy (Meath) - Posts: 384 - 01/02/2019 14:59:27 2161445 Link 0 |

Just noticed a result for div 3 yesterday. Blackhall gaels 1-5 Castletown 3-20.Just wondering what's gone wrong in Blackhall gaels? Only a couple of years ago they were a good senior side. bobjaffacake (Meath) - Posts: 1398 - 25/02/2019 10:23:15 2167876 Link 0 |
It's more than a couple of years since they were a good senior side.. What about the current Keegan cup champions Dunboyne losing by 18 points to O'mahonys. They must be missing a few but surely there are some players from the junior team that won the championship last year that could step in.
