Twelve of Meath 15 played Championship football last year , how many of Dublin team did 5 at best.
Meath are way off the standard required to make the super 8s .

Regardless of what team Dublin had out yesterday they would have been playing to their full potential, many of these playing more of out of their skins than some (fact) with a lot to prove to Jim Gavin. End of day we bet Dublin, who played and who didn't is irrelevant. It was a charity game man....dont be taking the good out of it speaking about super 8's....

I think it was 6 actually. But what difference does it make?? Honestly. No one is going to think we will beat Dublin in a all ire final after yesterday's win.
Take it for what it was a charity challenge match, that raised funds for a deserving cause. And as a side not shows that the probable 12 :15 players who will start in league are fit and ready to go. Forget about super 8s. It shouldn't be on anyone's list. All that matters is the league.

Agreed. Most important thing this year is the league. If that goes well, rest should follow, maybe even super 8s which would be a real breakthrough.

I want to see consistency in performance this year and less of the jekyl and hyde carry on. Likes of Newman, Harnan etc coming back wiser and more mature should help drive this focus on. Niall Kane, Shane Glynn and Danny Quinn are also the kind of characters we need around the place so good to see them involved.

Jeez lads i hate to say it but i'm a little bit optimistic about the season ahead.

We've lost Donal Lenihan but in my opinion getting a fresh Mickey Newman back we've a better player who has done it at a better level than Lenihan in the green and gold.

We've got Padraic Harnan back involved shortly and whilst he's not in the same league as his uncle Liam he's a solid player who won't back down from anything. I think he'll add strength to the team at half back or half forward

Niall Kane is consistently over the last couple of season's the best wing half back in the county and finally getting a chance to play in a meath jersey.

Ethan Devine is developing into a great footballer and could help us solve some of our problems in the midfield and half forward line.

Now no one is saying we're anything better than what we are but we've a bit more strength in depth than we had last year.

In 2020 we should have Ronan Jones back from his two years study abroad and if we could get him back onto the panel we could improve further.

I still think we're short a modern type keeper and maybe Beakey is that guy if given a chance. I've not seen much of him so hopefully some of the cilles folks can give us some insight.

Totally agree. These returning players and the new lads I think add a bit of steel to the team. Something that unfortunately has been missing for many a year. It doesn't gurrantee success, but it focuses the mind in the only game in town. The league. Everything else is a bonus.

Don't want to get started about what looks like positives because I have said that every year and the opposite happens. Very tough start to the league and if we don't win against Tipp I worry for our chances.

One thing that could hinder the league is these new rules, McEntee doesn't like them and from what he has been saying in the media he doesn't even train or play games in training using the new rules. He just makes the players aware of them, not sure how much that will help.

Most of those rules wull be gone by the start of the league......a review due in january and there is too much of an uproar about them from the players/management, The handpass one in particular

Hedging your bets is what it's called. But if we are not even training for them we will b caught out nicely.

Based on Saturday nights match for me the new rules did not have any positive influence on the match, if anything it made the game slower and less attractive to watch. Both teams were trying to save their hand passes for when they were in attacking positions, and they did this by doing 5 and 10 yard kick passes to each other around the middle third with the majority of passes going sideways, backwards or out of play all together. There were no marks given to either side close to goals or anywhere inside the 45, with the only one I can remember being given was to Meath defender Shane Glynn when he caught a simple ball into his chest and the referee blew for a mark which he ignored and played on anyway. What in the name of God is the point in giving a defender a mark for? Also the referee missed a couple of hand pass fouls with both teams getting away with 4 in a row on one or two occasions. The conditions were poor but I did not like they way the game was being played. They have basically created a game of Australian Rules with these new rules and I will be disgusted if they are brought forward to the national league. And also these rules would be a complete and utter mess at club level with most referees struggling to cope with the rules already in place. Leave the game alone and focus on improving the skills of players and providing them with realistic and competitive fixtures.

Well said Big Joe - It baffles me that the authorities think that rules imposed on County games can transfer readily to club games! Most refs at club games, without the support of neutral linesmen and umpires, struggle to keep up with the game - they won't be able to keep up with the handpass rule etc

Would agree with that. I was on the fence in beginning then v Laois thought maybe it might work. However after Saturday and particularly Sunday under the old rules, im definitely back in the camp that doesn't think this is a good idea.

I'm not disagreeing with you at all seems like these rules are no use. But to ignore them is not really the answer. Now I don't think that is happening but if it was god help us if the rules are made to stay for league anyway.

McEntee isn't ignoring them it is just hard to train for them to be honest and they are not 100% sure if they are even going to be used for the national league until 7 days before it starts which is not ideal. The only place you can practice them are in matches and in house games.

But going by the interviews he gave he doesn't even use them in house games. But I do agree that a lot of them could be scrapped, especially the handpass rule.
