Conlon has serious potential as a forward.

Conlon has serious potential alright - I would add that Campion and Devine also have serious potential. With Cian O'Sullivan, Newman, Biggie, Brian McMahon etc we have good talent up front to pick from. last year plenty of people on the forum were critical of the Wallace's. I think they both have something to offer - I think Eamon would make a better wing half back. I think Joe is a really exciting talent! He is injured at the moment - he hasn't walked away from the panel. Lenihan is certainly a loss but we should be able to pull together six lads who will test the opposition!

That's good to know about Joey. Eamonn is gone traveling I hear. Yeah all strong players in forwards just need to gel together and get into a good run of form. Don't care what anyone says. That forward line is a match for any county in division two on their day. Let's hope we see plenty of what they can do.

Westmeath comfortably beating Dublin in the final. Royalio11 (Meath) - Posts: 750 - 18/01/2019 21:32:53 2158096 Link 4 |
In my honest opinion I think we are stuck with a manager who most think he has nothing to work with.for me that is a cop out. But he has got a new back room team and nally as coach if let at team.will take time to gel his mark on it. I know you will say the same bout westmeath.but they got whole new set up manager Cooney Keleghan coach, fresh start all new so it was I say easier to get there lads up for it. We are at a weak period in meath football with great young lads coming thru. Let's hope next manager will get the benefits of that.

Agree it is very worrying even if it is only January. in all honesty we have been very poor in league and championship the last few years. Ok we played well vs Tyrone but really they had 3 or 4 goal chances in that first half which left us off the hook. I am not being negative but we struggled in a very weak league 2 last year and knocked out after 2 championship games . No doubt that we have gone backwards, the Tipp game next Sunday will show this. People slated MOD after we lost to Westmeath but to be honest losing to Longford is far worse.

So now we are having OTT reactions after games meath aren't even involved in?? Jesus Christ almighty.....that sort of reasoning, well we didn't beat them and westmeath did so westmeath must be better then us, is the reasoning of a child, totally different game. If lads are worried after last night's result, by the same logic, they should be delighted cause we were the closest to beating Tyrone after Dublin last year so we must be in the top 4 or 5 teams in the country, both equally ridiculous. Anybody that says meath didn't actually play well last weekend either wasn't at the game or is just used to saying it at this stage. southmeathgael (Meath) - Posts: 709 - 19/01/2019 07:32:28 2158136 Link 18 |
Totally agree, you cannot compare games. I only saw the 2nd half of game last night, but the one thing that did strike me was the quality of the westmeath kickouts, they were well worked, ,long, but put where his player was clear favourite to get it. I was at the Meath -Dublin game and while I do believe that dardis is probably best in the kickout dept, we are seriously lacking in strong mobile players around the middle, which leads to a lot of 50-50 kickouts if they are kicked long. Westmeath did seem to have more options in this area

Well done to Westmeath, thats a good win for them over Dublin, irregardless of the circumstances. For us, I wouldnt read too much into it just yet. Meath and roughly 25 other counties of Ireland are in the same sort of level. Its not uncommon for any Div.2 team to fall to a Div.3 or even Div.4 team in games these days. W/Meath beat a team of nearlymen and youngsters playing for Dublin. Every game must be taken at its own merit in this day and age, as every team can beat everyone on their day. The exceptions are mostly last seasons Super 8s who are a bit ahead, and Dublin's first 15 who are a long way ahead of a big chasing pack. What's this a sensible post on Meath? Now I have seen it all. Of course you are right. Don't know if you saw my post on another topic. Win lose or draw some so called Meath fans will be on to criticize the team and particularly management. We cannot get away from the fact that we have a anti mcentee brigade within Meath football, it's pathetic. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 17035 - 19/01/2019 10:50:52 2158154 Link 1 |
The .ott reaction to a game not involving Meath is absolutely nonsense. Can I ask do these same people say that Westmeath are way ahead of Kildare?? Using their same logic. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 17035 - 19/01/2019 10:52:41 2158156 Link 0 |
Meath people, and a great many Meath supporters have a superiority complex, we all have it to an extent. We expect to win and win out of who we are, and tend to judge ourselves off of the Dublins and Kerrys. It was ok 25 years ago to think this way but in 2019 its just a bit pathetic really. Itll not change either. The rest of the country really does enjoy laughing at us, see the Division 2 football thread on the national forum for example. Its the sad reality, we've fallen from riches to (nearly) rags and itll take many years and very careful management in Meath at ALL levels to reverse the last 18 otlr so years of slow decline.

I have seen both matches and the difference is the type of football being played. Westmeath attack with pace while we spend all our time with about 12 players behind the ball with nobody marking anybody. To improve we need to change the style of football that we have been trying to play over the last 4-5years. Dublin as a team are above the sum of the individuals while we are the reverse -below the sum of the individuals. Wish everyone the best next weekend. browncows (Meath) - Posts: 2189 - 19/01/2019 11:14:29 2158162 Link 15 |
Half agree with this post. On current form we are level with that Dublin team but lack their killer instinct, as evidenced by not building on a good start and not finishing the job with the penalties. Westmeath's current form is ahead of ours. This to my mind comes from a working kick out strategy coupled with strength and mobility around the center, it must also be remembered that Westmeath lost their No 11 very early on and they coped with the loss no bother.

Look at least you admit you have a agenda.

I think the fact that we won the Leinster Minor in 2018, the special U-17 championship in 2017 and the Gerry Reilly Tournament (essentially an U-16 Leinster) and has amuch imprived showing at U-20 last year shows the level of work already going on.

Well said - anyone who has any interest could drop out to Dunganny mid week and see the work the Under 20's and Minors are doing. The 20's are training 4 times a week! That is serious commitment from lads who are either in school, college or who have just started working! Of course, I am sure the other counties are doing similar and I would suggest just because of the history, there is no devine right to expect instant results. I do think however, that there is a new attitude building, one where our younger players don't feel inferior. This is something to work on! It is very encouraging. However Meath is a big county with a large GAA drumbeat, young players 15-18 will always be there and will always develop in schools/clubs. They must be handled the right way between 18-21 to entice them to stay on and grow as players, also once they hit adulthood their club suddenly becomes an issue within senior selection, ie if theyre North Meath or South Meath they often are overlooked. They also have to study, work, and many stop playing all sports or emigrate, or simply dont commit, which is understandable. Of the current 16s,17s and 20s, realistically only 10 may progress to play senior football for the county, and that might be optimistic. There are some great prospects though.
