Just a query to see what is going on with Wolfe tones hurling. I see they could not field in div 4 league yesterday which is the second this year and then took a second hammering in div 3 this morning. A lot of young players available in the last number of years so should be doing better. Some fall from grace for that club. Who is managing them now Shivermetimber (Meath) - Posts: 124 - 01/04/2018 16:04:40 2089961 Link 0 |
No Things really bad there looks like another hurling club about to go extinct. I'm sure the CB will be happy though. Clear up a lot of time for football fixtures. latouche25 (Meath) - Posts: 325 - 03/04/2018 15:06:34 2090692 Link 0 |
No much different from other years some clubs only get 1 or 2 Div 4 games played and then fall as they dont have the numbers expect before that league is finished that there be 3 or 4 teams left still fielding numberedjerseys (USA) - Posts: 347 - 03/04/2018 15:18:57 2090698 Link 0 |
I see Kildalky had to use 5 players twice in order to field 2 teams. What chance have tones if this is the case. overthehill72 (Meath) - Posts: 334 - 03/04/2018 16:44:09 2090734 Link 0 |
Definitely should be doing better but there are a lot of players that would be on the first team unavailable for one reason or another. That has always been the case for our hurlers at this time of the year. I recall the Tones shipping a heavy beating from Kildalkey's second string in the league last year too. You'll see a different team line out in the first round of the championship against Kilskyre Moylagh. I believe Tom McKeown is manager again with Donal Curtis also helping out. To say it's a fall from grace or 'another hurling club about to go extinct' is a bit much.

They must have had enough players for two teams to register two teams. I know a lot of new players have come of age in the last number of years. As far as i am aware they didnt make it out of groups last year and have shipped heavy losses in the last few years. The players are quality but they cant seem to get it onto the pitch. Must be a issue re training etc

they draw on footballers from local clubs, probably hard to get the time for everything at this time of year,

Tones could field two teams with all players available but majority of these lads choose to play football only during league season. There lies the problem.

Shivermetimber, you should know better than to be stirring on this. Wolfe Tones hurling is absolutely fine, the management are in complete understanding with their players that the championship doesn't start until June and realistically, if you look back over their last 2 or 3 years, they never really contest too much in the league. Wolfe Tones will be hard to beat in every game of the championship this year, that I have no doubt! Last year they lost their GK in the Brendan Davis cup before the championship and took a couple of games to find an adequate replacement, which may have cost them the earlier games of the championship. They went down by 1 point to both Na Fianna and O'Mahony's and were extremely unlucky to loose both games and had luck been on their side, they would have been in the quarter finals. Also they got to a Semi-Final of the Brendan Davis and weren't good enough after a long season against Killyon. As for the 2nd team. If you look at some of the quality players they had playing for the 2nd team over the last few years, they are now expected to make a claim for a 1st team spot and it's a big ask for those players to play 2 hurling matches over the course of a weekend along with football commitments. Nothing is stale or wrong in the camp and due to a number of their hurlers having county football commitments, ie U-19's right up to the Meath Senior Football team, it's hard to replace lads of their quality. bowza123 (Meath) - Posts: 42 - 11/04/2018 09:57:24 2092288 Link 1 |
Hi Ya Bowza123.... You were very upset with me a few weeks back on the post re Wolfe Tones Hurling and now look at them. Lost 3 from 3 in the league and a removal of the second team from the league. Div 4 hurling league next year I'm afraid.... Great championship preperation!!

A draw and a loss int he IHC and yet again another walkover in the JHC and you insist all is fine. What planet are you living in.. Hurling in that club is a shambles. It has been for the last few years and is only getting worse. Ye wont make it out of the group this year, see ye beating Rathmolyon in next game but then been beaten by Kells and that will be curtains. Good man, a keyboard warrior! You should know better than anyone, seeing as you were a selector for the Tones a few years ago, that the lads that are playing for the club put their heart and soul into every game. The biggest problem in this county is that hurling plays second fiddle to gaelic football and that lies the problem for clubs like Wolfe Tones, Kells and many other North Meath teams. They were the better team against Kilskyre/Moylagh and should have held out even though they were missing players like Eanna O'Kelly-Lynch, Caolach Halligan, Killian O'Brien, Donal Keoghan and Mark Coleman. Then they push Na Fianna very close after loosing Ray Doran, Eoghan Harrington and Thomas Reilly, which is a credit to the players. The fixture schedule has been extremely difficult for any young lad that would like to play both sports and unfortunately some lads take preference to gaelic. That then has a knock on effect on the 2nd team (which by the way, were awarded the walkover). So if you take all this into consideration, I think you should really stick to watching Cork on the telly and maybe talk less negatively when you clearly haven't a clue!

Well Bowza, not sure who you are refeering to but i certainly was never a selector with the tones but thanks for putting me in such high esteem. Now a keyboard warrior would not be the term i would use as what untruths have i spoken about? Hurling is in decline there and one win and one draw is what has happened at IHC and also walkovers in the JHC is what happened so no real issues there. As for the i not having a clue, i have only ever stuck to facts, lets see if my prediction comes through of ye beating Rathmolyon and losing to kells. One last point, hurling doesnt play second fiddle to football in Meath, look at Ratoath, Kells, Na Fianna, Dunboyne, Kikskyre/Moylagh, Longwood, Trim etc. It works for these clubs because they are committed to it

By the way, what players are you talking about??? You know better than most that Wolfe Tones and teams like them who rely heavily on duel players get 1 or 2 that come through every year and sometimes none. Calling the Tones a shambles of a club in one of your later comments comes across to me as a cheap dig because you were ousted from the club a few years ago.....

It's funny alright, as I said I was never a selector or even closely involved with the tones but you certainly seem to be harboring I'll feeling towards this person. That is not good, Shivermetimber (Meath) - Posts: 124 - 05/07/2018 20:59:35 2118937 Link 0 |
Easy saying that when you're behind a keyboard.... I know these forums are for opinions but to be honest, trying to kick a team, (who have been marred by injury, emigration and lads picking gaelic over the huring in their club) when they are down already doesn't have a good reflection on you. Putting a thread solely about "Wolfe Tones Hurling" obviously shows you hold great interest for one reason or another, to what's going on and I'm sure the way other people who have been reading this thread will see through your BS. bowza123 (Meath) - Posts: 42 - 06/07/2018 10:23:37 2119057 Link 0 |
Good to know, for a while i thought you were someone who held the rulebook close to his heart from craggy island

I realize that with Meath out and the club c/ship not back yet you are always going to get off the wall threads on here but this is different. loads of people could start a thread about different clubs in both football and hurling that are in their opinion struggling but for the most part, they don't!! yes comments are made in threads but to start up one like this is totally out of order, I don't know who the people over the Tones are but i'm sure they give 100% to it and as has already been stated, in north Meath dual clubs , especially rural ones find it hard to keep both going at a high level because it is only natural for one to be stronger at different times. It is a credit to the Wolfe Tones club ( and all dual clubs) that they have kept going. The county board should be doing everything in its power to make sure clubs like this survive by giving the backing in relation to coaching resources etc. With the impact of other sports and a growth of the urban areas in the county we are almost certainly heading to point in the coming years where rural clubs will face the choice of amalgamation or extinction ( A topic for another day). in the meantime as stated already , as a county we should support these clubs in whatever way we can. Back to this thread, of course everybody is entitled to their opinions but the personal nature of it, you would really have to wonder what is behind it!!!
