In fairness to Graham Reilly he had a good game yesterday. Consistency seems his problem. Andy did the wise thing by relieving him of the extra responsibility of captain, However , looking at the Graham Geraty documentary we have no player in his class now. Anyway our problems now are not down to selecting the wrong players. FEAR, Attitude and general approach are problem areas. That seems a problem regardless of who is selected to play. There are also sensitivities around timing of substitutions such as Sean Tobin as an example Calling a spade a spade poor man management examples seem to be too apparent. Fear is a paralysis, and any manager worth his salt deals with that as a priority. Allow players some freedom to express themselves. They have plenty of football savvy without all being Graham Geraty. Hang on in there Andy please. Ask yourself the hard questions. It is a long haul we know that. So far we don't even see that we are on the right road at all, never mind the right direction Some people say you should not question management, just take it on face value regardless because you are a SUPPORTER. I say bull..it to that. I prefer to question from within for the moment.Unfortunately it seems from the last few matches a lot of supporters have walked away and won't accept rubbish any longer with no sign of improvement. nobull456 (Meath) - Posts: 841 - 12/03/2018 16:36:19 2084003 Link 0 |

Going on recent performances from Biggy i think in my opinion he would be a contender.

Massive loss to the way Andy wants to play ...he was the link between defense and Attack. The only other player on the Meath team that can fit the role is Brian Menton playing in the half back position preferably left half back,When he plays there he is one of the best in that position!

I look at my own father who has been going to games since the 1940's - 50's. He is heartbroken over what we have become. He still drags himself along to these games regardless because he is a supporter and he backs them no matter what. The younger generation will never get to experience what we have done over the last 30 years. We will never get the management we had to get us back to where we were and possibly the players, its easy to give up but as long as we have a team i will be backing them regardless.

Those teams had some ordinary players also, moulded brilliantly by Sean Boylan. I am not sure if you went to league games in those years but meath had some pretty horrendous performances and i remember Colm O' Rourke pulling them through games on several occasions. Biggie has had to take on levels of responsibility that few of those players needed to do personally. So based on having watched those teams I am 100% of the opinion that Biggie would be a key member of those teams. oldsam_newsam (Meath) - Posts: 638 - 12/03/2018 16:56:13 2084016 Link 2 |
Hard to Judge if he would have made it in those sides but he is a good footballer who is completely wasted in this system we play. He spends most of the time in the half back line or midfield trying to get the ball. This is not his fault but is common sense, leave him up forward if he is a good scorer. It seems to be silly tactics the last few years players played out of positions like Lenihan , O'Rourke and even having Sheridan as sub goalie etc. The problem is we are and have been an extremely defensive side who concede too many scores for too long now and this can not be changed overnight. We have no plan B. Teams know what we are at and so do we . It is not a team full of top class players but we should be better then this. Graham Geraghty was allowed to be a forward and only that in the mid 90s and he was hardly ever behind the Midfielders who knows if Biggy was allowed the same . When Stephen Bray Retired so did our whole forward line he kept us in big games when the rest of the team were fairly average. We have forwards well able to score O'Sullivan, Biggy, Lenihan and especially Tobin all wasted SheridansTry (Meath) - Posts: 168 - 12/03/2018 17:11:39 2084026 Link 0 |
Fair enough each to his own. My first intercounty match was watching Meath v Cavan in Navan in the league in 1952. Cavan beat us in a replay for the all ireland the same year. The da will tell all about the great full back Paddy "hands " O Brien so. Yes indeed i have missed only a few games since . I to am disgusted to see the present position

Interesting people saying biggie would get on teams past personally I disagree. But I am surprised people are not mentioning d keoghan and menton who are the only one that would have a chance imo bobkarlgees (Meath) - Posts: 1192 - 12/03/2018 17:23:31 2084033 Link 0 |
We're in deep trouble, I don't know what's after happening to us, we looked to make a bit of progress last year, not a huge amount but the hopeless 2nd half collapses seemed to have been addressed. But this year we just can't seem to make anything happen, do we actually have the players to cause other division 2 teams problems and they're not performing or have we simply slipped to Division 3 standard? I don't think he is that interested in football. However he was involved the last time I seen a Meath team give rousing full blooded displays in Croke Park. So he would have to be considered as a very good motivator. Mind you those displays came after a lack luster League so don't dispare just yet. Many people however now put those lack luster displays down to heavy physical training been done that spring that certainly bore fruit later. Nobody on this page are suggesting that the footballers are doing heavy stuff at the moment. Certainly our footballers and to a lesser extent our hurlers could do with a motivational boost at this time. He got to my mind some unfair criticism following the Toher affair and he certainly owns nothing to the people indirectly involved in that sad affair. Same here lads. Watching meath since 84 and my dad has been watching them since the 50s nearly all league games and championship. He has told me of bad times of early 60s like 1961 we lost to Dublin in a Leinster final 4-14 - 6 I think - the next year I think we ran Dublin to 3 points . 1964 was probably the greatest meath team ever In his opinion.Very u lucky not to win the all Ireland that year . Jack Quinn has a goal disallowed against Galway in the semi final which shouldn't have been. He reckons if we bet Galway that day we would done the 3 in row of all Ireland's . My dad also thinks this is the worse decade for meath since the 20s as mentioned by a poster here. After watching meath for 50 plus years he still has hope things will turn around but thinks we are 3/4 years off. At the moment he thinks we wouldn't even win division 3. It's torture at the moment but we got to believe in better times ahead MeathWawa (Meath) - Posts: 61 - 12/03/2018 19:28:52 2084065 Link 0 |
Kick out tactics yesterday was to go long into the wind all through the first half. bert09 (Meath) - Posts: 1668 - 12/03/2018 19:52:14 2084070 Link 0 |
Agree. The perfect half back line for me is Menton, Conlon and Forde ....next year bert09 (Meath) - Posts: 1668 - 12/03/2018 19:56:44 2084075 Link 1 |
Bet ur dad is like mine...im hearing alot more bout the good old days than i ever did before especially the past month or so. We sat in silence the whole way home in the car yesterday. I hope we can turn things around. Its hard to keep the faith but we have to. Every saturday / sunday we are filled with optimism before a game...to witness the rug been pulled from us. Like we always say...sure next week is another week. If we dont have a good day next week in Drogheda it will be a very sad day for Meath GAA & for me a very bitter pill to swallow. But we need to keep flying that flag & supporting the lads, get behind them, fill Drogheda & show we do believe in them. Loyalroyal17 (Meath) - Posts: 627 - 12/03/2018 20:24:37 2084082 Link 0 |
Why are we playing a 40 year old keeper? Is no one willing to play in goals it's hardly building for the future.

There is a real feeling that this season is just drifting out to nowhere. With the disruption caused by the weather all momentum seems to be gone from it (not using that as an excuse; it was the same for every team). Greenfield (Meath) - Posts: 413 - 12/03/2018 20:52:21 2084094 Link 0 |
I know its odd....there seems to be no kick out strategy ,its lump it down the middle stuff and you either catch it or try winning the breaking ball and we are doing neither ! To this day i am still puzzled by the goalkeeper position ,when Andy took charge of Meath he said he would be looking at players at club level at club matches seeing how they perform ..seeing if he can unearth new talent ..seeing if there is any lads out there up to the standard of county level ! Thats perfected ...its actually what we want Andy doing looking at lads seeing how they perform ! But how in the love of god did he pick Joe Sheridan for the number 2 goalkeeper position last year ? No harm to Joe a gentlman...but Andy never seen Joe play at club level or club matches in that position but yet he got picked for the number 2 goalkeeper position ! Why ? I don't think Andy seeing the importance of a goalkeeper in the modern game ! WhyTheLongFace (Meath) - Posts: 829 - 12/03/2018 20:53:45 2084095 Link 14 |
