Not in the fashion of 2 men following him around the pitch...But the holding player is 4 or 5 yards in front of him to stop good ball and then drops back in a double marking position in scoring zone circle ! If the ball is moved to a wing position the marker follows and the half forward does the double or midfielder for 3 man close Position were the original marker steps back 2 yards so Biggie doesn't run forward but is forced to pass back.. i know i know i still prefer the man on man marking instead of this new age technical gobbly goop WhyTheLongFace (Meath) - Posts: 829 - 26/01/2018 20:08:26 2070886 Link 13 |
I have great faith in Andy. I think he could be a great manager. We havent had one since Boylan left. But he is not above criticism. What your saying about tactics. My gut feeling is Andy is not a great tactican. I dont know. Im only guessing. For me this wouldnt overly worry me. Because most of the great managers are not great tacticams. Most are great man mangers. And I think Andy best strenght is his man management skills. Sean Boylan was not a tactican. Sean did little tactics. Meaths tactics in 80s and 90s where two words ,organised chaos. Every player fought for every ball like his life depended on it. And the ball went long into the forwards. Sean was a great man manager. Mick Dywer also did not do tactics. He was also a great man manager. Brian Cody isnt a great tactican eitheir. Hes another great man manager. In other sports, Alex Ferguson could take a training session or again was not a tactican, but a great man mamager. Central to all great managers is man management skills. Thats where I think Andy will shine. And when these players reach their peak thats when Andy will get the best from them. Thats why its so important in 2020 2021 2022 that he is in charge. There are very few great tacticans in gaelic football. People think mickey harte is s great tactican. Donnelly and othet cosches in Tyrone did the tactics. Harte is a great man manger. There has been only 1 great gaelic football tactican and that was Mcguiness. But ulster teams players have always been tactically aware. And Donegal have always played a short ball game which suits the modern style of football. We have and neitheir have Galway or Down other long kick counties got used to the new tactics in football eg blanket defence, seepers. Its no coincidence that Mayo and Donegal who have always played a more possesion game have suceeded more in the modern game. We have not adapted to the new changes. Andy is steeped in Meath football. Meath football have never done much tactics. This is an area where Andy is getting used to. But there are very great tacticans in the game. Fitzmaurice and Galvn do tactics but their players are so good they can adapt to any tactic eg short ball long balls hand passing sweepers. Other counties blanket defence and overall tactical game is a shambles, because the players are not good enough to implement the tactics. Andy has to get to grips with the modetn day tactics. But I believe if we look at the bigger picture that is his man management skills will ne the key to sucrss. The most important thing is gettimg the most out of players. If your a great tactican but cannot motivate you wouldnt win anything. But tactics take time to implement and sort out. I think after kildare looss . It was such a shock to Andy he did go more defensive. But i dont think this suit us. Our mentslity is to attack. But I think as the players learn the modern game we will adapt more to the modern game. So I wouldnt be to hard on Andy regards tactis. He comes from a county that never did tactics. And there are very few in the modern game who are our great tacticans. The only way we will apdot to the changes in gaelic football is practice , hard work and experience. The players need to be given time to learn how to adapt, to think on their foot. Andy needs to learn the ways of the modern game. But we cannot expect to be Dublib overnight. Be tactically as good as Dublin overnight. What will happen is players will get more experience of the modern game and when they peak at 27 28. They will have the power skill and experience to deal with the game. I have my doubts we will see the changes and improvement that many are looking for this year. Its going to take time. It takes hours and hours and practice on the training field to get the tactics right. It will take more then a few months to get the players tactically aware. However there is few positives I have noticed so far this year. 1 We look fitter and our strenght and conditioning has improved. 2 We might have more depth to the squad with the new players adapting well . 3 If keoghan and Conlon play in the half back line we will have dynamism their we have not had in a long time 3 last year we relied on Menton.at midfield. This year we might have Flanagan Rooney as well asMenton at midfield. 4 If mckeever was to step up and show his club form . We could have two inside forwards in their mid 20s reaching their peak instead of relying so much on Lenihan So there could be chance we could be stronger this year and make progress if all the above clucks. But i still believe next year the real progress will happen. Patienceis the key. If we were to beat Roscommon it would Andys best result so far. And Meaths best victory in championship or league in years . When is the last time we have defeated a provincial champions in league or champiinship. Probaly Dublin in 2010. It would be a great start. And we have been poor starters. We usually finish well. If we could win our first two games, we would be in a great position. We havent won our first two games in the league in ten years or more. I cannot remeber when we won our first two league games. He is a good footballer Nobull...i think biggy would have a lot more fans over the year from his own county and outside the county if he wasn't constantly talked about on here !

To me he is a confidence player . The type of player who may operate better at low key. Apart from Louth games i have never seen him get any extra attention from opposition. i never was his biggest fan, because he goes missing too often when needed. He has talent, but i think he will do well to hold his place this year. Seems some alternative forwards appearing . I know he has some fanatical fans on here. But they are not helping him to hold his place by over hyping with excuses etc. imo. Leave the man alone, and let him work on the mental side of his game. I know Boylan pulled a master stroke when he made Graham Gerathy captain. Andy probably trying the same with Biggy. They are 2 different Grahams however.

It was the right call from management to give the captaincy to Menton, has always gave 100% in the Meath jersey. Just wondering why wait until now to announce it? Should he not have been captain for our first game not that it matters that much. Barney123 (Meath) - Posts: 676 - 26/01/2018 22:16:15 2070923 Link 12 |
Graham Reilly is very talented footballer. He would walked onto the half forward line of the 80s . Hes a better all round footballer then Beggy or Gillic. And he would have got on the forward line of the 90s. Hes better all round forward then Barry Callaghan or Nigel Nestor. Hes unlucky at a time to play when Meath are unsuccessful. Hes also unkucky to play at a time when theres so little room on the half forward line with blanket defences sweepers players funnelling back. There is little room to run with the ball. His best skill. Furlong1949 (Meath) - Posts: 1046 - 26/01/2018 22:17:09 2070924 Link 12 |

And just finally on the captaincy, I hope we don't see any of the nonsense during this year that graham had to put up with, people calling for him to removed as capt one two matches into league and all during championship, we even had one nominate a player who has walked away this year to be captain. Nonsense, I hope Bryan is given the respect he deserves, you will never hear me questioning his captaincy. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 17035 - 27/01/2018 08:31:02 2070987 Link 1 |
Well done to Andy. Time will tell if Bryan is the man for the job. The very best of luck to him in trying to lead by example.

Ben Brennan Thomas O'Reilly: are both new enough to the fold, big day for them wish the very best here is hoping and can a job.
