Some strange comments! O'Rourke was/is a very good goalkeeper- maybe a few defenders who could man -mark and set up an odd attack would help. Cluxton plays centre back for his club so playing outfield can be a help. O'Rourke was a very good shot stopper (like Clarke) and he caught the odd point in some matches- nobody is perfect, after all we are all humans. browncows (Meath) - Posts: 2189 - 04/11/2017 09:55:36 2060378 Link 13 |
Being a good shot stopper is the bare minimum requirement for a goalkeeper, and of all the traits POR lacked, this was one of the main ones. Which is not his fault in fairness, as he is not a natural keeper. I think Meath really need a natural goalkeeper this time around. When you weigh up an experienced GK's skills - organization, shot stopping, commading the area and handling - versus just anyone who can kick it accurately to a man 10 yards away, I think the former will save you more points over a season. With the new kick out rule, coupled with the mark, do we still want a keeper who is just good at short kick outs? meathgaa91 (Meath) - Posts: 47 - 04/11/2017 15:44:02 2060435 Link 0 |
I couldn't agree with you on PORs shot stopping. To me that his one of his best strengths. To me there are three main aspects of a goalkeepers job: Catching high balls (including dominating the square), shot stopping, and kick-outs. I think POR is exceptional under the high ball, very good at shot stopping, and poor at kick-outs, unless you just want the ball driven hard and long down the field in which case he is your man. However that does not suit Meath at the minute, because we do not have any exceptional high fielders and we are not good at getting breaking ball. Although it may sound odd, in my opinion, shot stopping is probably the least important aspect of a goalkeepers job. Putting it another way, I don't think there are many times where a goalkeeper will make an exceptional save that another reasonably competent goalkeeper wouldn't also make. Whay I look for in a goalkeeper is to be commanding in the air, to be able to kick the ball out accurately, and not to make any big mistakes. Just to be solid. Exceptional shot stopping is an added bonus. To me POR only ticks one of the boxes, and fails badly on the "don't do anything stupid" test. Does his command of the square, and his shot stopping make up for that? - I don't think it does. anfearbeag (Meath) - Posts: 1134 - 04/11/2017 16:30:14 2060448 Link 12 |
LeitrimRoyal , you may have gotten the wrong end of the stick here . And your moniker probably precludes to the reason why . Paddy O Rourke was what we had in goals for a number of years , and thanks have to go to him for the commitment . We got good days and bad days from him , but thanks to him for his commitment . Cluxton was not born into the Dublin team as a finished article . he was developed , and coached and fitted the plan perfectly . He has excelled in applying the tactics required for Dublin to achieve their objectives . When we were going well it was because we had players that had potential which could be developed . So what are we looking for in a goal keeper , get the goalkeeper that fits most of the requirements and then develop them ...... its as simple as that Meath_True (Meath) - Posts: 285 - 04/11/2017 17:03:05 2060452 Link 0 |
