Tactics if Meath play Dublin next year?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I was thinking about the draw for Leinster next year. If we get drawn against Dublin in the quarter final or if we play them in the semi final or final how should we approach it.

After seeing carlow doing reasonably well in a provincial venue against the Dubs I think the best scenario is for meath or Kildare to draw them in the quarters and have it fixed for navan or portlaoise. I'd give us a small chance in that case.

But if it's in croker at the quarters stage or the semi or final especially I think we have zero chance. We will get absolutely hammered and it will leave us in a bad way entering the qualifiers.

My proposal is we put out a reserve team and rest all our starting team for the qualifiers. have them on a very tough training routine the week of and after the Dublin fixture. They can peak mentally and physically for whoever they draw having mentally accepted their fate long in advance.

Dublin hammer our reserves by 50 points and we are set up lovely for a qualifier run. It will also prove a point to the gaa who killed leinster as a competitive and exciting province by turning Dublin into a professional juggernaut.

I know some stone age traditionalists will call me crazy but the sooner we wake up and smell the coffee the better. something innovative needs to be done because our current approach is not helping us reach the quarters.

Ok I will take the bait.
Firstly neither Meath or Kildare can play Dublin in quarters, for that matter neither can Westmeath, as the semifinal pairings from last Leinster are seeded so we can't play dubs Westmeath or Kildare in quarterfinals and it works same for them.
It has been like this for a number of years. How did you not know that?
Now to the other part. Put out our reserves. No.
Andy will in the tradition of Meath football not do a damage limitation exercise, he will not only put out the best he has available, they will take to the field believing they will win, when and if we should meet.
There is a lot of football to be played between now and then. I personally cannot wait til first week in Jan to go to obyrne game, then we have a tough league to try and gain division one status (andys stated goal). Roll on is what I say and f the begrudgers.

Wow! Hopefully no-one from other counties reading this believe that is the defeatist attitude within the county! How about we work hard to get a team capable of beating the likes of kildare first and build from there to be able to compete with Dublin, that negativity won't do us any good anyway

Sweet Jesus I spend all debating on the main forum about Dublin splits, defending O'Rourke and fighting with Laois men and I pop to the home page and see this, why do we bother really........

Was it not Andy who set Meath up with 15 men behind the ball as a damage limitation exercise vs. Dublin in the 2012 All Ireland minor final, scoring 5 points in an hour of football?

Just being realistic. Currently we have no chance of beating Dublin in a leinster semi or final.

I too look forward to the o'byrne cup as we can actually beat the dubs as they enter their third string team into it. The league I'm really looking forward to aswell. Division 2 is always very exciting and competitive from a meath point of view.

Royaldunne, I didn't know that because I've lost all interest in the leinster championship. Dublin have won 13 of the last 14 leinsters and next year will win 8 in a row. You have to be a bit crazy to still get excited about that competition. As I said the all Ireland qualifier series, the league and the o'byrne cup are where it's at for meath supporters now.

We are doing good work at underage level in meath now. If the gaa invest in us like they did Dublin we might be competitive again in 10+ years. Until then we need to be realistic and look at the big picture. A dummy team against the Dubs and targeting the inevitable qualifier after they beat you is the smartest way to go.

We'd have a much better chance of reaching a quarter final and you never know, if we played a team like Galway or roscommon in the quarters we might even make a semi final.

Ha lads horse and carriage comes to mind here. The kildare boys will be doing some laughing at a tread like this. How about tactics to get over the majority of the teams in Leinster first before we even consider Dublin. Agreed the provincial championship is a farce at this stage but that's no-ones fault but our own. Meath have probably slipped to the fourth best team in Leinster behind Dublin Kildare and Westmeath and on any given day the rest of the teams in Leinster could beat us so relax about the Dubs for another 4 or 5 years (if we're lucky).

I'm saying if we meet them. Kildare are currently the second best team by some distance. They probably have a 1 in 10 chance of beating Dublin so they should go all out and try it. They are basically the meath team of 2012/2013.

Everyone else in leinster should play their second team and prepare properly for the inevitable qualifier. Only exception is if you get the dubs in round 1 outside of croker.

Anyway this probably won't happen but if we face Dublin this year and our strongest team gets hammered I'll be saying I told you so as our sunken ship sails into the shark pit known as the qualifiers.

And to the poster who says we should be at Dublins level. No we shouldn't. They are at a professional level no other team has ever reached.

Obviously we could be doing aswell as the likes of Kildare but in reality we'd still be losing by 7/8 points to dublin even if we hit our maximum potential. They are a combination of having all the resources in their favour along with many millions of sponsor and gaa money pumped into them.

I can see Jack's point but it would never happen, no manager would do that and what would you say to the supporters forking out money tp attend the game.

What I WOULD say is that we need to be planning to bring the underage setup unto a new level. Off the top of my head something like this....

1. Encourage as many clubs as possible to employ a full time coaching officer. I think central GAA will fund 50% and the clubs are asked to pay the other 50%.
2. My proposal is for the Meath board to fund 10 - 20% of the clubs contribution. This could be funded by an online Lotto or similar funded weekly by the likes of US with weekly €2 or €5 subscriptions with a carrot of anyone on the €5 subscription allowed free into club games in the county.
3. These coaching officers to hopefully link with the local schools and WIDEN THE PLAYING BASE. We need as many of the new foreign youngsters playing GAA from an early age and give further encouragement with introductiory memberships of clubs etc.
4. Get a consistent approach across the county and expand the programmes of excellence (and fully repick the players at each stage).

Just touching on it there but we need to be expanding our player base big time and really doing a good job at developing the good ones and increasing the numbers involved in development squads big time.

No it wasn't a damage limitation exercise, it was trying to defeat dub by element of surprise.

Nobody can compete with Dublin because they are a professional team and are funded to the tune of millions by the GAA, the government (5 million under Bertie's govt), AIG , Aer Lingus etc. Its a ridiculous and frankly laughable situation...they are like a combo of PSG/Man City/Chelsea playing every game at home, in the Vauxhall Conference.

I'd rather Meath didn't enter a team in the senior championship until the GAA find a way of reversing this gross injustice and we just focused on developing our club championship, coaching and facilities so that in 5-10 years time we can compete.

If you find that completely unbelievable, just wait until you see the amount of big name players that are going to drop off the Meath panel in the next couple of months. Intercounty football for the moment is dead.

I thought the tactics Mayo used against Dublin were really good and a template for other counties. They put Lee Keegan to closely man mark the main Dublin playmaker Kilkenny and it certainly paid off as he had his quietest game ever for Dublin. Unfortunately Dublin have so many other good players that they still got over the line but they struggled without their main playmaker particularly in the first half. I hope Andy will have learnt from last year and come up with game plans that will at least give us a tactical chance against the better teams. Our players are not as bad as many here suggests. We just need the right game plan and better results will follow.

Jack_Goff (Meath) -We won the O'Byrne over 12 months ago but some supporters were not happy and totally discarded the win. Winning any competition is always better than winning none - you have to start somewhere. Everyone want to win the AI but most counties in any year have a chance approaching Zero.

Would agree with most of them proposals. The problem is , is there either the will or desire to do something like this at CB level
