Agree with you here. It's a shame to see referee blowing up for the slightest touch. How do we expect our lads to stand up and be physical at county level when they aren't allowed to tackle at club level?
Dunboyne didn't look too impressive last night and Ashbourne weren't too impressive tonight but I still think both will be in business end of this years competition

sadly the standard of referring seems to be poor. but you are right, the refs cannot be too soft. strangely though the refs seem to be better at junior b level from what i have seen and experienced.

Performances this time of year aren't overly important, Just about getting points on the board. Would I be correct in saying Simonstown lost and drew their first two championship games last year?

Looks like there's only a few guys on here that can judge form with their heads ....
The Kells Vs Tones game was a difficult one to call but knowing how Wall vs Kearney prep was the clincher here . Mental prep was what it was all about especially after the league match ....

In fairness to the referee last night. The biggest problem was the black card rule, the worst form of cynical fouling, which on at least 2 occasions, stopped one on one with the keeper, could only be punished by black cards, Ashbourne players were only playing the system, but rathkenny were really hard done by and in fairness it could have changed the result. Surely if a player knew he would miss the next c/ship game, he might think twice before engaging in what went on last night.it was the most obvious example of why the rule in its current guise does not work!!!

Footnote is correct. Referee had no choice last night but to issue black but seriously- Rathkenny seriously hard done by -Two one on one situations with the goal keeper in the dying stages and to be fair, they were probably going to both be goals, only to be dragged to the deck in the most outrageous fashion. Rule needs to change to red cards in goal situations. If so Rathkenny probably would have one that game.

footnote i dont think that would mak a difference missing the next game. if i was a manager and seen a one on one and my defemder chasing back and id expect him to take one for the team. i think any supporter of a club would expect any of their players to do that in a tight game. not condoning it but its understandable

was at this game very cagey and i thought tones were the better team very composed on the ball. But in saying that kells missed a sight and a lot of their forwards looked a fraid to take the shot on. Mattimoe was impressive in parts but at times was going to deep to get the play going. kells also struggled to utilise the extra man but i put that down to good organisation from the tones

Wasn't at the game but if my team were 3 or 4 points up in the closing minutes I would be disappointed if they let a lad walk in for a certain goal. I would expect my man to take a black card for the team. I agree that the rule should be changed and a red card given but on the other hand such is the inconsistency with the use of black cards you could see some very harsh red cards given out.

Good article posted by JL about no programmes at SFC games, high prices etc.

All very well-made points and worth raising. However, I wonder if that article would have been published last year when HS were title sponsors? I would say probably not.

Simonstown just got over the line, bit of experience at the end getting up for that final score. Credit both sides, it was billed as tie of the round and it proved so. Can't understand how one of our three intercounty referees were not in charge however. Some decisions made were baffling. Blew for a cilles mark at one stage so player stopped, next minute he's throwing the ball up and simonstown end up getting a point, it's the small margins. Another time he gave a free out for an incident that he never seen that happened 60 seconds beforehand with play still going on.
I wish there was a programme, few very good players on both sides but I didn't know who they were. Conlon simonstown had a very good match and won his battle with Reilly.
Presume 3/4 them cilles lads will play champo again for meath juniors this week

Overall his marker would probably be happier with his evenings work. Scored a lovely point in first half but wasn't involved in second. Will probably play for juniors Wednesday. Tobin kicked some very impressive scores
