Are you for real? Keeping the U21s on their own only landed us 4 titles in a row. Not bad for teams that never perform or correct their mistakes. Bit early to have Donegal waltzing off into the sunset, they've won nothing yet. We got beaten by a much better group of players first and foremost. Get over it.

We got hammered by a better team. Better prepared too.

Cavan won 4 u21s as there was continuity in the group. They all knew the system. They kept a large panel so the players eligible the following year knew the style of play, plus Peter Reilly was a selector under Terry Hyland. FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2216 - 06/04/2017 19:21:04 1976643 Link 0 |
Better players usually look better prepared. There is no way we could have prepared similarly, that's silly talk. Donegal don't have a great U21 team because they ran them out in the McKenna Cup. Donegal ran their U21s out in the McKenna Cup because they knew they had a great group of players. This is not some sort of blueprint all counties should be using. Had we done the same we'd have been a laughing stock.

Yeah we won 4 u21s but so what. If a player is good enough to be in senior panel he should be. Would we care about another ulster u21 or do we want all the best players playing for our seniors to improve the players and the team. The u21 grade won't even exist next year. We were in division 1 this year and it would have being a great opportunity to get players used to that standard.

Would have to agree. Jason McGee Donegal midfielder was captain of their Minors last year. He was playing Division 1 football this year ane on the u21 team. That's a high standard. FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2216 - 06/04/2017 20:25:57 1976678 Link 1 |
Let me get this straight. When we win it's so what? But when we lose we go into meltdown and throw the toys out of the pram. These lads should have been playing to keep us in Division 1 but then again there's none of them good enough for senior according to some. Damned if you do and damned if you don't on here. Division 2 next year will offer plenty of a challenge to any of the players coming through.

And we were doing so well up until 2010. But sure all will be right again in Cavan football from next year on with the new U20 format.

So Einstein tell us what's in the Donegal air that makes them better players? You are full of silly excuses. Cavan_Slasher (Cavan) - Posts: 10253 - 06/04/2017 20:51:16 1976688 Link 0 |
I think it was the right idea from 2010 to leave the u21 squad as itself. They didn't need to persist with it really after we won 4u21 titles. Not all about winning, developing players is big too. Div1 as good a place to have given them a chance.

What I meant was we won 4 ulster u21 titles. We have bigger fish to fry now. Holding players back till their 22 and delaying their development makes no sense. The players should have being involved with senior squad to see what it entails. Could have being getting used to system, regime, commitment.

Winning trophies is good for young lads. Kerry haven't released any of their U21s this year for Division 1. Lads that age will be getting plenty of games for their development. Player burnout is something which should be checked too. Just a point on one of your posts Foolsgold, Jason McGee was actually injured in Division 1 this year so was probably a bad example to use. Only coming back now and his team were nearly knocked out against a very tough opponent in his absence.

Kerry have played u21s in the league. 4 started the first day against Donegal. Jack Barry played midfield in plenty of games, eased up before the Munster final. FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2216 - 06/04/2017 22:28:30 1976716 Link 1 |
I don't agree Dora. How can you say it works for one year but not the next. The U21 squads deserved the best chance they had at silverware. Plenty of those winning teams got Senior exposure come Championship. Also if you get knocked out early in U21 there's still league games to play. No player that was good enough had his development delayed or held back till he was 22. That's simply false.

They can but playing 2 games a week over an extended period is risky. It's worked out ok for Donegal this year but I don't think it's good practice.

We've not allowed u21s play with seniors so they are held back. The four u21 titles were great an provided a winning culture within the county but we didn't need an u21 this year. We would have being better to get players playing division 1 senior football.

If the u-21s were available and selected for the seniors during the league, you'd all complain about burnout or why others weren't given a chance eg Madden/Murray/Clerkin/Reilly etc. Some of you are literally impossible to please. Hardly, McGleenan wanted 3 U21s before the League but they weren't released. Given them a bit of game time early in the League would be beneficial, then throwing them cold into the Ulster Senior Championship. FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2216 - 07/04/2017 14:30:32 1976897 Link 0 |
