Great to see the launch of the Club Players Association - without grass roots club players, the GAA would be nothing, and its about time the fat cats in HQ start to realise this. The treatment of club players is disgraceful, and Cavan Co Board are as bad as the rest of them with the mickey mouse Spring League and Breffni League. deanmartin (Cavan) - Posts: 643 - 10/01/2017 15:02:40 1944575 Link 0 |
Speaking to players they are disappointed with no Spring League because they'll have weeks with no matches to play.

Deanmartin .. the club players are all members of clubs . And it's clubs who elect the County Board. There's a process for motions to that can be passed regarding problems . The whole setup within counties and nationally is all about money. Awwwwnow (Cavan) - Posts: 1050 - 10/01/2017 16:35:59 1944594 Link 0 |
IS there no Spring league this year? gowna02 (Cavan) - Posts: 93 - 10/01/2017 16:46:19 1944600 Link 0 |
Maximum of 16 teams in Senior championship. Home and away fixture with playoff if 1-1 after home and away. Awwwwnow (Cavan) - Posts: 1050 - 10/01/2017 17:00:07 1944607 Link 0 |
16 teams is too many in the senior championship. there should only be 8. there was a plan in place to reduce the number of teams but the clubs themselves kept putting obstacles in the way. We are shown up in Ulster when we compete at inter and junior level and that's because our 9th - 16th best teams are competing at senior instead of inter and the same situation arises for Junior. s goldrick (Cavan) - Posts: 5356 - 11/01/2017 13:58:26 1944850 Link 1 |
Golderick I only gave 16 as an example how a championship could be run off over 6/7 weekends if money and seperate gates are not the main objective. Secondly NO county player will give up playing for his club and rightly so. I don't know or care what club your from but I know for a fact no county player from most clubs would not agree to that. Remember is the club that mounds the county player and when you begin to forget that your in bother! Run the championship off, stop wrapping up county players in cotton wool and release them back to their clubs like Brian Cody does in Kilkenny when they not playing. Senior clubs being reduced to 14 this year. It will be twelve next year.

I believe it's time to separate the county players from the club players. let the county mgmt. pick a panel at the start of the year. these players then will not play for their clubs or colleges that year. the clubs can play regardless of the county. The county players to be given "expenses" for the year. s goldrick (Cavan) - Posts:4466 - 11/01/2017 13:58:26 1944850 How ridiculous is the above statement. Shut the door on any potential outstanding player that might emerge throughout the year. I am surprised S.Goldrick I really thought you would be the last person on this forum to come up with it. Just an example if I may I think there are 4 Cavan Gaels players on the panel at the moment there is at least three Lavey players how would these clubs manage without these lad's not a pig's chance in hell. s. goldrick - I totally agree with that suggestion - I have been saying that for years. Its the only way to manage the situation . The thirty players could give their full commitment to the County as long as the county involvement lasts . ( that panel of course could be adjusted as the season unfolds of course ) If the All - Ireland series was wrapped up by the end of August as is being talked about there would still be a couple of months left for good competitive club football with your county lads available ( and a lot sooner for most counties ) . In the meantime play your club leagues minus the county lads. I know some clubs will be more affected than others but that's the price we re going to have to pay for the County scene gone so professional. Players at the moment are being pulled in so many different directions and they don't want to let anyone down . tenyearplan (Cavan) - Posts: 130 - 11/01/2017 19:11:07 1944945 Link 1 |
there is a very simple solution to the fixture congestion. The Championship should be played like the league, as in as many games as possible are played on the same weekend, for example why only one Ulster championship match any given weekend, why not all four qf the same weekend, then the two semis on the same weekend, so instead of the Ulster championship taking up 8 weeks, it could be run using only 4 weekends. Same in each province, would automatically half the amount of weekends needed for inter county games. eduardo66 (Cavan) - Posts: 64 - 11/01/2017 19:36:50 1944952 Link 0 |
this is spot on. provincial championship are too drawn out especially when you throw in replays. for instance cavan entered the 2016 championship on 29th May and weren't knocked out untill the 3rd July having only played 3 games. That's six weekends taken up and not even an ulster final to show for it. Playing quarters on the same day/weekend will also increase crowds theoretically because only one game will be on tv. Six day turnaround wouldnt be an issue either.

The 2026 World Cup will have 48 teams and be run over 32 days. The Connacht Championship has 7 teams and takes 63 days. Farcical.

how do you know that no club player would agree to that. perhaps if the "expenses" were generous enough they might and fair play play to them if they did. Also it's not a permament exclusion from your club. It would be until the county is knocked out of the championship. As I said 8 teams is enough in the Cavan senior Championship. You could run that off fairly quickly. the club league(s) could be run off during the spring/summer months . It would also give fringe players an opportunity of a senior game that they otherwise might not get (owing to the absence of the county boys).

Seanorinn, It's not that stupid, It may sound radical but it is a solution to a problem which will not go away otherwise. Let's face it , The county set-up is Professional in all but name already.

ha ha , it's true though. I could never figure out why it takes so long to run off the Connacht championship.

I like this idea lads but I think that there is too much TV money generated from live championship games for the GAA to revoke.
