Doesn't look good for first round of ulster v Tyrone in a few weeks

I can't understand why we didn't play our strongest team today and try to win this match. Why was Tom Hayes left on the sideline until the last five minutes.
Also I can't understand why Cian Monaghan was substituted for Thomas Galligan.

I can think of a few reasons marita. One being the Tyrone management team being present and the other being its a meaningless competition and no more than a challenge game. I'm sure the goal was to learn about the panel players

I don't agree with you at all.
If we had won the game people would be praising the team and management.
The Tyrone people had nothing to do with the result. Why would they?
Our management played a team they thought would be good enough to win. It wasn't.

I think it's a bit of an insult to both players and supporters to get to a final and then not try to win it. It's not as if Cavan teams have so much success that they can afford to spurn final wins. Counties like Kerry and Tyrone will always play to win no matter what the competiton.So what if Tyrone management were there. It's not as if they won't already be aware of our key players through minor school and college teams.

It's a bunch of friendlies for Christ sake. Do you honestly think anyone will give a flying frig who won the Hastings cup in a few weeks time. I know I won't! If we were to do what marita and slasher say we'd have our best 15 out every day and show our hand to all just to win a Mickey Mouse trophy.

There's a little bit of truth in all your comments. Yes I think Management once they got to a final would have liked to win it regardlessof whether Tyrone management was there or not. Niall Lynch did say he had a panel of players that he wanted to test in all situations. A Hastings cup final gives him the chance to see how some players react in big games under pressure. I am sure he wants all players in the panel at this stage to realise that every player will get an opportunity to perform in key situations/games and they are just not there to make up numbers. I suppose that's one of the beauties of the Hastings cup and having a good run in same gives get more opportunities to see players under different conditions.

Whats's more alarming however is there doesn't appear to be any defensive system in place and we have shipped some high scores as in lots of goals. Regardless of whether he's testing lads out or not you would assume he would have them playing in some system and equally trying to find out what players in his panel are best suited to same.

I know I keep calling these things like the McKenna cup a micky mouse event but the hastings cup now you have two chances here win the hastings cup get a bit of silverware on the shelf and then remember you have one more match and I would rather be on a crest of a wave than dwelling on it was ours for the taking. Should they loose their first U21 match thats it for the year so a complete different situation. I would say if what is being written is correct it's insulting to the Cavan supporters who travelled and paid to watch this match. I was not at it as I had a full day's work in Breffni so I cannot comment but please I hope what you are writing is not true. ???

All I can say is Cavan did not play near a full strength team in any game and have done only a handful of collective trainings. The goal for Cavan is ulster and then maybe the holy grail. You are talking Sean like we have never won anything at this grade. Hastings cup, gimme a break. If supporters travel to these games to see Cavan in all their glory well they need their heads checked. This is about trying lads out and figuring out who the best 15 is. Yes would be nice to win but to suggest we should be putting out our strongest team to try and win, well that is bonkers.

Fredflint winning creates an environment that is comfortable, loosing creates insecurity lack of confidence lack of self belief you fredfling give me a break winning creates a happy medium results follow. Different for the seniors they have seven matches in the league plus at least one match in the Ulster championship and the back door the U21 get one go at it match by match thats the difference.


Laugh all you like but these fellas are bursting guts to get results it's that simple. I bet not one player on that pitch Saturday wanted to loose that match.

The team on the field tried their best my difficulty is why the management did not out their best team. We need to get a culture of winning games and by playing out best teams we will win games.

We lost 1 game in ulster in 5 years, by 1 point. I think the culture of winning at this grade is there. We need to address the culture of losing semi finals and that's not done in Hastings cup games in January

a final is a final regardless of whether its the All Ireland, Ulster, Hastings Cup or local tournament.
No one likes to loose them. Winning them instils confidence, and winning is a habit.

I have a question in relation to the u21's. Were there open trials as it seems to me that the squad has been picked from previous minor/ u21 squads. Was there a net cast to see if there was fresh talent out there, or is it a closed shop ?
