Cavan V Roscommon

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

The toughest draw we could have got, but probably the challenge we need. Roscommon will be like a wounded dog after the defeat to Sligo and will come out eager to put things right and will not be one bit worried about playing in Breffni after last year's annihilation.
They had legitimate ambitions on a Connacht title this year so will be bitterly disappointed.
Both teams missing important players but like one previous poster said, we could make a fine team with the players we have unavailable.
K. Clark, Alan Clark, R. Dunne and even Hayes are 4 lads that could walk into our defense and improve us so they are big losses. Then obviously Givney, Keating, Tierney and more would strengthen us going forward.
But if we can get big performances again from the likes of Corr, Gearoid, McDermott and Mackey, I feel this is one hurdle we can get over. I also feel with Dunne and K. Clark out, McEnroe will need to step up and put in a big disciplined performance, arguably our best defender still standing, imo.
Who are the Rossies missing btw, apart from Murtagh?

Match will be live on RTE2 according to this link, so hopefully it doesn't have too big of an effect on the attendance. http://hoganstand.com/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=239692

Gearoid McKiernan is some player lads.. surely if Canavan was being honest and picking the players in form, he has to be in the top 5?

Its a good test for Cavan, one I think we will get through, because Roscommon are showing poor form at the moment - Id rather face a Roscommon side in good form, which would be a real test for us.
I dont believe the game is an indication of how far Cavan have come, the league was up and down, whilst we let Monaghan back into it, we cant take much from the London match, but should we beat Roscommon, then our performances from there on in will certainlly be scrutinised. I do fear though that the shackles will be back on the further we go.

In any case, Terry has 4 yrs under his belt and has taken them as far as he can, so its time for someone new with fresh ideas to come in.

London cut U.S. open at times right up the middle. Poor passing and taking the wrong option left turnovers easy for us. We won't get away with that against stronger opposition. Judging Roscommon on their Sligo performance you would have to say they gone slightly backward. If there is real improvement in our side we should beat them. What confused me about the London game was different selectors shouting different instructions. Ruislip being so close to the sideline it's easy to hear n see everything. It's like a club ground.? Hyland only communicated with force. Mchale only communicated with the physico and the doctor. Instructions to players were not clear , slightly confusing I'd say if the game was close.

According to a poster on the Roscommon forum

"D Shine,D Murtagh,S Kilbride,Ward,Higgins,Carty,C Daly,Harney will all be either out of this game or no where near fit"

Most of our injuries are defensive and most of theirs are in attack. Does anyone know why Martin Dunne played no part in London?

if I remember last year our Rossie friends were also stating many injuries....most of whom ended up playing....so ignore this as I understand only Murtagh will be out
where as for us looks like our non playing (for all sorts of reasons) group are
K Clarke
A Clarke
Givney
keating
Hayes
R Dunne
Tierney

Martin Dunne wasn't injured. I've since heard he's quit the panel but Gilsenan is still part of it for now.

Higgins is 100% out
Carty needs knee surgury badly cant train and is playing poorly due to not be fit might play but very unlikely

Pincity in all probability of those you named there only d murtagh won't be involved as well as mark healy apart from that we will probably have the rest at 70 to 80% or better some of those you named were only sick.
Cavan and ourselves aren't whingers about who and who not we have leave that to meath:-)

sxckev Mayo - Gearoid McKiernan played well against a very poor London side who ply their trade in Division 4, he was in and out of the game against Mongaghan, so youre basis for being on form and being amongst the top 5 players in the Country is a good game against London - lets judge him against Roscommon and in the match after should we get there and then we can decide whether he's on form.

eh no. form is in the present tense. you can't judge a player's form by what he may or may not do in the future or what he has done in the past. so at the moment his form is very good.

Actually higgins and shine are about 50 50 higgins was back training with panel about a week before sligo match unless he hit another setback
Shine got a nasty head injury in training not fully aware of how serious that is.

Regardless of who is available or unavailable for Roscommon does not matter a jot.
They have had the upperhand over us for a few years now and most of their players have a winning mentality when it comes to matches against Cavan.
This is very important for them and is bad for us as being mentally right for a match is half the battle.
Cavan need all their focus and all their players at their best for this game.
No hiding place for anyone now.

SGoldrick - Read over your most again, and you'll see how stupid you sound.

In order to measure McKiernans form, you need to look at matches past & present over a period of time.
He had an up and down league campaign, did nothing special against Monaghan and was excellent against London, but hardly worthy
of a place in the top 5 players in Ireland!!
