Cavan v Kildare

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Very important game for both sides in 6 days. Kildare will have to get some points on the board while we still need to find another 3 to be safe. Any word on James McEnroe?

Gilsenan
Hayes
Dunne
Mc Loughlin
Clarke
F.Flanagan
Mc Enroe

K Brady
Mc Kiernan

Mc Keever
McVeety
J Brady
Dunne
Mc Dermott
M Reilly

That would be my team V Kildare, with an early introduction of Mackey, Fitzpatrick and B Reilly if the forwards not performin. Mc Enroe and Clarke to deliver fast ball and attack out of half back line. I feel sorry for our full forward line watchin the carry on in the half back line, it is a problem and I think the confidence of the two FFs Dunne and Mc Dermott must be destroyed by now. Whoever is advisin Hyland is not servin him well .

You got it in a nutshell...fast delivery in to the forward line...too much assing about in the half back line. Half back line receive possession, first thing they do is a solo or a hop, first thing they should be doing is looking up and seeing who has made the run. We have a forward line feeding on scraps at the moment.
In addition, management have no plan b, this was obvious in the 2nd half of the Monaghan, Tyrone and Down games. When things arent
going to plan, theres an inability to see/make changes. With a few minutes left of the Down Game and needing a goal, the obvious switch was McKiernan into full forward and put in high balls.

Gilsenan needs replacing. He let a ball bounce over the bar and only found a team member once from his kick-outs as far as I made out.
Martin Dunne should be benched. He is too weak and timid and it didn't matter what kind of ball he got, he either gave it away or fumbled it.
The only forward to shine was Mc Dermott who tried his best.

At least 2 changes required.

We have no plan B up front. Our ff line is too hit and miss when the ball is delivered. Half the time it doesn't stick and comes straight back out. In that scenario try something different, put Gearoid on the square and test the fb line with a few high ones. But you'd need Argue to cover midfield in that case.

I think we should use the u21 lads. Lets get our priorities right here, survival in division 2 is far more important than 5 in a row.

Kildare are a shadow of the team they were under McGeeney. Still, they need the points far more than we do. I suppose all we could hope for is that they'll take us lightly and we bounce back from the last day. Crucial game. Lose and we're staring relegation in the face. Win and we're almost safe. Simple as that.

gearoid was not great in periods of the game and killian had an off game, the ball was going out they just werent getting it the opinion of the people around me and myself was he was right not to come out with the wind and what ever a lot of things went wrong lots of players not at their best you seem to have a fixation on particular players i think gilsenan had a pretty good game and backs let him down more then once dunne to me doesnt put up a fight for the ball but thats the nature of the lad i thought mcloughlin had a good game and mcdermot worked well,we were poor all round lets up the anti on sat and support the team confidence building is the way forward

Reading your posts above and I am wondering where you at the match at all. if we had ten foot men in the forward line they would not have got a ball for our half forwards half backs and midfield had not got the strength in their legs to kick the ball to them.
Whats the story with Gilsennan what did he do wrong Saturday night. I don't rate him but he did nothing wrong that I could see except he cannot kick the ball any distant. Do you know they brought in a player from Lacken Raymond Galligan he might be a better option.
Rory Dunne is a fine lad but leaving the back line like he did Saturday is committing murder for Down were able to do what they liked. It would do Cavan no harm at all to watch this match and see how dis-organised they are. Sadly I cannot see this team beating Kildare Saturday I am worried we have been found wanting.
Who was or is captain does anyone know. ??? You mention Lyng well he was taken off injured so will he be playing Saturday ??

This is a must win game . I'd call it a 4 pointer . Kildare look in real trouble - if we beat them I can't see them staying up and think 5 points will be sufficient for survival (unless Laois get their act together in spectacular fashion) . If we lose then it brings Kildare back in to the mix and relegation is a toss of the coin again .
This game could be a real turning point in our year and in the overall direction this squad of players is heading in . Hopefully the weather is good for the weekend and it's very important we get a positive reaction from the team after the setback on Saturday . I'm reasonably confident we'll get a good result .

For those going on about quick ball you are right only to a certain extent. Firstly you forwards need to be out on front and secondly they need to be able to win a dirty ball. We don't have that and there were several times against Down the ball went in and came straight back out. (As an aside, the Goal Down got came from 1 guy winning a ball against 3 backs and getting past 2 of them...)

Now, if you are a half back and you see this happening what are you likely to do the next time.. Keep kicking it in?? I don't think so. Players play it the way they see it on front of them. I can guarantee you the times they were arsing around with it was when it was a 6 vs 3 or a 6 vs 2 inside...

Cavan lack a player like Kevin McKiernan in the half forward line, powerful and direct. A lot of players are much of a muchness in the forward line. Mackey back is a help but still well off fitness.

Kildare will be low on confidence themselves, hopefully Cavan can raise their game. Down looked more up for the game on Saturday.

Down used Kevin McKieran as a sweeper who moved forward at speed. Martin McHugh highlighted how he was used on last night sunday League show on RTE2

The point being Cavan don't have many strong running type like him. A lot of pacy players.

Mark McKeever would probaly be the player to have in the half forward,

I think that you are well out of order here. Our goalie did alright, so a ball bounced over the bar with the aid of the gale that was blowing to the town end at that time, misjudged but I think we can forgive the lad under the circumstances !! his kick outs were against the gale in the first half and he had to contend with a strong cross field wind for the second. Martin Dunne also did his best and was isolated for long periods with 1 or 2 sweepers in front never mind his own marker, I thought his movement was ok and he tried hard. A bit of reality please. These lads do their best and I presume the team is selected on who is performing best at training. Very easy to name and criticise when you dont have to put your name to the post

Just had another look at at the Down game.
We were awful, didn't look up for it.
Opposition looked fitter and faster.
No options up front, McDermot ploughing a lone furrow up front. Dunne a nonentity.
Fair enough conditions were appalling but Down dealt with them better.
When we drew level I thought we'd kick on,never happened.
If there's one game that we should be up for its against Kildare.
Serious PAY BACK here.

When people start realising that the standard of football in Cavan is poor, we can all move on. Yes we got to an All-Ireland Q/F in 2013, but we got trounced by a Kerry Team who didnt get out of 1st gear. We got promoted from Division 3, beat Roscommon on the way, but they beat us in the league final when it really counted. We then got beat by an Armagh Team who were relegated to Division 3, and then got hammered in our own back yard by Roscommon in the qualifiers. The McKenna Cup Campaign was awful football, people will say we beat Down, Monaghan, & Fermanagh, and we lead againstTyrone at half time, but when you look back at it, the Fermanagh match was dreadful stuff, the 2nd half of the Monaghan match, we raised the white flag once in the 2nd half, and we failed to register a single score against Tyrone in the 2nd half. We drew with Roscommon, beat Laois, and then lost to Down in what will go down as another abysmal performance, only one of our forwards scored a point from play in the 2nd half. If you can take some positives from all of that gentlemen, then I stand corrected, however, the reality is when it really counts, we simply do not have enough quality to see things through. At the end of the day, it is management responsibility.

Cavanblueman , do you not think that's being a bit melodramatic after a loss ? Why is the Down game any different than the others ? Why is it the game that really counts ? Points are points . Why does the 3 we have already on the board not really count ?!!!
Survival is the target for this year . We are not going to win every game in this division . Very rarely do even the top teams manage it . We were always going to lose games this year . Part of the process . Calm down a bit . We lost . It wasn't pretty . Losses rarely are . We play again at the weekend and have the opportunity to right some mistakes . We might win , we might lose .Either way we'll move on to the next one .
