Laois V Cavan

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Shannon maybe the stupidest post I've ever read on hoganstand and that's saying something. So the wing backs are the reason why the full back line couldn't handle a high ball? Conceded seven scores. Try Martin Dunne on the 40? Are you for real. A man who can't win his own ball. Ronan Flanagan no responsibility at sweeper and needs a new role? He's played corner back wing half back wing half forward and corner forward. He's not the only one to play different positions. So much stupidity it's hard to address it all.

I have to say that even though laois were very poor this was a little bit of a watershed for us. Why you may ask? I don't know did anyone else notice but we went man for man for most of the second half with effectively no sweeper. I not saying we didn't funnel back but suddenly there were players in midfield and the half forward line when we broke. We pushed up stopped their short kickout and proceeded to cleanup the breaks around the middle. McAveety was excellent and looks to have a head on his shoulders and he knows when to go and not to go. I also thought Fergal Flanagan was immense across the half back line. Damien Reilly and others kicked wonderful scores and only a few of the 17 scores came from frees, even though this did hide the weakness in the inside forward line. At least dunne look disgusted when he was taken off which is always a good sign in a player. McEnroe looked good when he came but laois were long dead and buried by then..

Maybe the tweaks to the system were a little more evident than people seen but to tally 17 point speaks for itself..

Dora, sorry you see my post as a slur on one particular player , that was certainly not my intention, the young man you refer to has indeed given much good service to Cavan, . While I take full responsibility for the post my ramblins are the result of a very lively bit of crack and banter after the game last night in the company of like minded and maybe equally stupid fans, clearly I'm an over enthusiastic Cavan fan albeit a bit of a stupid one I suppose stupid people should really remain silent and leave commentary to the intelligent people of this world. Stupidly or otherwise I still see the future as blue or in more intelligent circles is that allowed?

Christ Shannon are you serious? You think we are comfortable enough in Division 2 that we can throw out a team and make 5 or 6 changes for the sake of it?! Our defence performs well in the main and it has become reasonably settled and you want us to change their positions or drop them to the bench as a result! Players need to have consistent game time in their positions. It breeds confidence and experience. After the performances of McLoughlin and Gunner last night could you honestly justify not giving them the chance to go out to do the same the next day?
And I also don't buy the fact that we don't have the players to slot in. McEnroe can easily come on anywhere from 2-7. We know Josh Hayes can go in corner back, McVeety and Martin Reilly can and have been deployed in defence and attack as needed. Paul Smith has been given his chance and stepped up to the mark in fine form.
You don't suddenly change a team without good reason. Between the first two league games Paul Smith has been blooded, McEnroe has slotted in when required, Jack Brady got on yesterday evening and won ball in the full forward line which Dunne wasn't doing. Barry Reilly came on for McKeever and showed his passing range can be used very effectively if we have someone inside to win the ball. So in the space of a week we have Barry Reilly, Paul Smith, James McEnroe and arguably Jack Brady staking a claim when given a chance. What more do you want?

Shannon perhaps I was a bit harsh and of course you're entitled to your opinion. Jonsmith put it better than I did. Most of our players have played in different positions such as Killian Clarke (corner back, midfield,CHB). What we're doing so far is working plus a few under 21s to go in. Mackey, Argue, Hayes, O Connor, Gerry Smith, etc all to come back. Squad size and competition is good. Full forward line needs tweaking.

Not suggesting team should be changed wholesale for next game just suggesting that this bunch of players are multi talented and versatile. Should Hyland go out and make wholesale changes right now ...eh no! Can all these players play a multiplicity of roles, I believe yes! You see I don't believe for a minuet that they are a talentless bunch as some might suggest , in fact I believe the opposite, I just believe ther is far more in most of them than we are seein. And there are players on the bench we have not seen nearly enough of. Murray, Corr, Moynagh and Tinnelly particularly. I don't suggest for a min that either Gunner or Mc Loughlin or any other player should be dropped however you worked that out. But game to game I do see some play better than others, has no one else noticed that.? As for diggin maybe I will go now to Australia and leave this forum to the higher intelligences! I leave however with my belief that all debate is good and all opinions worthy of consideration,. Closed minded scenarios scare me anyway . I surrender, please no change! I enjoyed the reaction, good luck in the rest of the games to all concerned. Over and out! TFIB.

And Shannon conveniently ignores the last line of my post where I named 4 players given game time and challenged for places, after just two games. I can only presume the hurried exit from the forum is driven by the realisation that your point was hollow.. Farewell.

I still think our goalie is a weak-link in the team...was at fault for the 1st goal and took RoryDunne out at the same time...he makes far too many blunders for my likeing..???

great win for Cavan at the weekend, delighted i made the journey to witness what seemed a McHale inspired attacking performance. If we can keep this up I can see no reason why promotion cannot be attained. Couple of goals conceded took the gloss of the scoreline a touch, but otherwise Terry is working his magic again. He's done a wonderful job, despite being totally unsuccessful in club management in Cavan, so fair play to him. Down next will be a good test, in what should be an open game of football, with Cavan's new total football style, looking forward to it.

Bit early to be talking about promotion , not getting relegated is still the priority . That is the only aim as far as this year is concerned . Next two matches are very important - it's been a really positive start to the league which is great but if we lose the next couple then it puts a very different slant on the table - Down and Kildare will be hurting when they come to Breffni . It we pick up some points from them then it puts us where we want to be . However I wouldn't want us to get promoted because we're not ready for Division 1 and would very likely come straight back down . If we can stay in Division 2 for a few years , get comfortable with a well balanced system of play , bring some more lads on a bit in their development , then we would be in a very healthy position to start thinking about promotion .

Think we all wanted to see something different on the attacking front so hopefully the display against Laois is a sign of more to come. Great spirit and determination, which have never been lacking from this group of players.

Have to agree with sean66 re goalkeeper. I always get nervous when he has the ball in his hands or when he leaves his line to tackle a forward.
