First comment since the match and I'm still gutted. You only get one stab at the big teams and fair play to Monaghan for driving on and getting the win. I have to say I was very critical of the ref on a few instances.
!. Dara McVeety completely taken out in a third man tackle under the terrace (in front of the ref) 2. Martin Reilly's black card (his hands were over the top of the player, at no stage was there a pulling down actions), technically this was a yellow card. 3. Stephen Gollogly's yellow card was a clear dragging down of an opponent and he eventually gave a yellow which was technically incorrect. 4. Dick Clerkins short free after Rory Beggan had wasted 20 seconds coming down to take this. it was deliberate time wasting and a hop ball should have occurred if Rory was allowed time to jog to the far 45 and then not take it.
Monaghan supporters beside me acknowledged these points also. Its a big gripe I still have since last Sunday. The management and players gear up for this one game for months and go out and get let down by the referee. Im not saying we didn't underperform in some areas of the pitch and on the line also. I thought that Martin Reilly would have taken the last two frees off the ground and while he missed one in the first half his frees off the ground this year have been excellent. Anyway, to the qualifiers and hopefully a good run. Best of luck to Terry and the lads

We were beaten by a point by a division one side, that's the last result to date under this management, the last result under the previous management was a hiding at home to Antrim in the last round of the league. You can make your own mind(s) if this represents progress or not.

Good points Cavan97 - I'd forgotten about that incident . It was in the first half if it's the same one I'm thinking of , under the stand and he was taken out off the ball in front of both the linesman and referee . Considering the cavalier way he handed out some of the Cavan cards and frees to Monaghan it was another very poor decision . Some referees can be a bit fussy and while technically our yellow cards in the first half could be argued to be correct by the letter of the law there was no consistency in what he was doing . Monaghan got away with equal if not worse incidents without any penalties . That's the biggest gripe you can have with a ref , no consistency . But the biggest damage he did was in the second half in handing the initiative back to Monaghan when the momentum was fully with us . I mentioned it in a previous post but the free against McVeety when he was fouled from behind in a scoreable position was an absolutely shocking decision and probably resulted in a 2 point swing when the game was in the melting pot .
Look I suppose no one incident decides a game . There's some on here don't want to view the game as a whole as it suits their agenda to lay all blame squarely at managements door . The decision to take McEnroe off is a stick some will beat Hyland with as the sole reason we lost the game . I didn't agree with him coming off but that's just me but it wasn't as dramatic a swing as some like to make out . We actually seized the initiative after he went off - Ciaran Brady made some good driving runs and we tagged on a few more points . While we did miss him in the closing stages if he had picked up a second yellow management would have been crucified - they've learned nothing from the league , how could they leave him on blah blah blah !
Games ebb and flow , momentum often swings rapidly from one team to another , 3/4/5 point swings are not unusual in Gaelic football and while not enough to decide a game the timing of these is crucial . A combination of things lost us the game - Referee made a few mistakes We probably froze a bit and didn't drive on We ran out of steam and needed fresh legs Management panicked and made some wrong calls (IMO) Players panicked and made some wrong calls Sometimes even considering these you might still have enough to get over the line but the biggest reason we lost the game was Monaghan seized their moment and were ruthless . They had the bench and used it accordingly and they deserve a bit of credit . They are no bad team . I hope they go on to lift the Anglo Celt Cup and have a long summer .

ponger - Paddy Heaney is an associate of the Anglo Celt Sports Editor Id like to welcome back Cavan97 and Fredflint to the forum, it must have been a terrible few days for you guys, but sure, theres always next year.
You can blame the referee all you want, he wasnt great, but he was poor for both sides. However, Cavan were winning this game by 4pts, poor decisions on/off the pitch proved costly. Like the McKenna Cup Final & the Meath Game, we were in the lead, playing good football, but we went back to the normal game of messing about, handpassing backwards and sidewards, slow build ups, and went for a long period of failing to score, allowing our opponents to come back.

I see a few people pointing out the fact that McEnroe was taken off because he was on a yellow. Was he also cramping because a few minutes before being taken off, he was down for a minute or so stretching his calf?

how does a lad who trains as much as him and gets looked after well take a cramp 10 minutes after half time.

DeanMartin, I acknowledged it was a tough few days and I also acknowledged that on and off the field we made mistakes I do blame the ref. You never commented after our win against Galway, but seem to derive pleasure over me commenting on the defeat? Are you taking pleasure that Cavan were bet? It certainly seems like it. I and many others travel to all our games home and away (albeit NY) and I love my county and I love supporting them. Yes it pains me when we are defeated, especially to our neighbours and I do acknowledge our limitations and mistakes. Our players and management go out to give the best for our county, they train and work hard and they do make mistakes on the field and on the line. I have taken issue to the ref for the decisions I've pointed out. So you statement "you can blame the referee all you want" and "better luck next year" just show me how passionate you are about our county? A Cavan man gloating to another Cavan man about Cavan's defeat! It seems to me you are delighted! Its irrelevant who you played with over the years. Your last post just shows your character and its for all here to see.

I think 3 fundamental things went wrong for Cavan
1) Referee bad decisions, I believe all of Monaghan scores in the first half came from frees. From what I seen from the game most of these decisions were very poor ones and very soft frees were given. Once the Monaghan players got within free taking range they went down very easily and the referee gave it to them every time. People give out that the game has become very defensive, from what I see the rules has made it that way. Any good hard tackle now, the referee gives a free therefore the only way you can defend is put a blanket up in front the player. I honestly think gaelic football is heading for a no contact sport the way some referees are making continuous bad decisions.
2) Once Cavan got in front they reverted back to the old hand passing game going nowhere with the ball. Off course Monaghan a division 1 and an experienced team turned the ball over and punished us on the counter attack, what they do best and known for. I don't know why we didn't keep running at that Monaghan defensive and play positive football, Cavan had the legs over Monaghan in most ends of the pitch.
3) When leadership/experience was required at the end of the match nobody stood up. The Keeper coming down to kick a second free after the first one went badly wide, Dunne was on the pitch at this stage, should of kicked it. It is these small inches in championship football that makes the difference and Monaghan had the experience to close the game out. Cavan management has to be partially responsible for this.

Gollogy's foul was given for use of the fist while making a tackle. The Cavan player didn't even go to ground, he kept on running and was brung down about 10yards further on by Darren Hughes so to say Gollogy should have got a black card is factually wrong. The ref was bad for both sides lads. Vinny Corry denied a clear free in front of the posts at end of first half and the last free of the game, which McKiernan won, was a soft as you'll ever see, infact the ref should have played advantage as McKiernan got his fist past off to a unmarked Cavan player.

Cavan97 - I take no pleasure from the defeeat and Im not here to gloat about anything - but when people start blamin refereeing decisions and trying to deflect everything away from management, then I'll certainly say my piece.
The game was ours for the taking, Cavan played absolutely fantastic football up until the 50th minutes - the best Ive seen for a long time, they ran at Monaghan in droves, some great interchanges in passing, and Monaghan were on the ropes. Then Cavan hit a break wall following instructions from the side line to retreat back into the old way of playing. Argue was left inside for too long, a bit of indiscipline and incorrect subsitutions etc.
As I said, the manager is 4 years into his tenure - granted, he brought organisation & discipline to the squad, so how about bringing in a manager that will bring a bit of success.

Actually I think the ref had a good game. he laid down the law early on as regards poor tackling and this ensured that players tried to tackle correctly. I didn't think that Martin Reilly's black card was justified (just my opinion but I could be wrong).
where we lost the game is clear. Ray Galligan kicking those 2 frees wide. He was brought in for his kicking ability and it back-fired. it's not only kicking ability you need but Kicking ability "under pressure". barry Reilly should have been on the pitch to take those. When Martin Reilly went off, he was the obvious replacement. We shouldn't be picking a keeper on his supposed ability to kick frees. and certainly not making his championship debut in a high-pressure match. It was a brave decision by management but ultimately a flawed decision.

Totally wrong Deano, Cavan were not instructed to retreat, they were physically done after 15 minutes in the second half and that is why Monaghan got on top. I said it already but McKiernan could not move for the last 20, Mossy Corr got nowhere near Clerkin on a few runs. Even Ronan Flanagan, for Vinny Coreys bad wide he chased Corey for 40 yards before pulling up. Only 52 minutes gone. Rory Dunne went forward to the Monaghan 13m line with about 58 mins gone, not the sign of a team told to retreat, but it took him nearly a minute to get back up the field by which time Monaghan had worked another score. McVeety tried hard but coughed up 2 balls by running out of road too, maybe fouled or maybe not. Argue was a passenger when brought out to the middle, he watched it all happen around him. McDermott busted a gut but spent a lot of time on the ground late on. Him and McVeety had the look of beaten men when Mone scored his point. Why were Cavan not fit enough? Retreating and keeping it tight might have been the best option in the circumstances!

Ihave to agree with s goldrick galligan was brought in for his kicking ability and unfortunately fell short there were more then one or two that would definitely have scored that last 45 secondly the ref was not that bad a few easy frees both ways hopefully they may have learned something from this was gutted they lost but am looking ahead as for wanting a change in management what would that achieve in mid championship let them buckle down now and see where we can go i love my county and am and always will be a proud cavan supporter i felt that the lads have improved greatly last sunday lets see what another few weeks training can achieve heres hoping for a long summer

MadgeKing - listen to Terry Hylands after match comments on youtube with Michael Brennan, the order was given to retreat. After 50 odd mins, they slowed the game down completely, they started to trick around with it, Mackey gave the ball away a couple of times with bad passes, and we got turned over a few times by carrying the ball into the tackle. But I do wonder how a Senior County Team were not fit to run for 70 mins - did they make the same mistake as last season, coming back training too early?

doratheexplorer County: Cavan Posts: 456 You cannot argue the black card for M Reilly his foul had but one agenda and that was to stop the attacking player from progressing. Had he got passed he had a free run going forward. So a deliberate foul and the card justified. Any contact above the shoulder to stop momentum justifies a black card. Look the players looked jaded the management were clueless especially with the taking off of J McEnroe unforgivable and time they were all removed and fresh ideas brought in. Please god come the national league next year they will have been replaced.

Mowbar...I aagree totally...management seemed clueless to me.. Hyland spent most of the 2nd half trying to keep Forde in line.. When Martin Reilly was black carded he was almost at the touchline when they realised it and therfore plucked the nearest sub warming up ( Lyng ) and put him on..which was a total waste as Barry was the one who should have been introduced... There is a profenional amount of money been spent on our county team but the way it is run is unacceptable...

1728719 The result was as most people expected, Cavan's performance in the first 45 minutes was better than what most expected, Cavan's performance in the last 25 minutes, was what most people expected, and was what we witnessed throughout the league. It was an Ulster Senior Championship game in Breffni Park, so it was inevitable that Cavan put it up to Mongaghan, but the fact is, Mongahan are a Division 1 side, are a better side, better players and if we were to play them 10 times this year, theyd beat us at least 9 times. There are two factors why we lost this match - No1 Poor Management - 4 pts up in the 2nd half, some players were tiring, and our running game during the first 45 minutes was beginning to slow down, fresh legs were needed to up the pace again, wrong substitutions were made. No2 Players - Some poor decisions - running into tackles allowing Monaghan to turn the ball over and counter attack, some poor passing with the final ball, and only putting 2 long balls into Argue in the 2nd half.
PS Martin Reillys was a black card, he tackled the player around the neck and pulled him down, it was a cynical foul to stop the player from progressing - Martins reaction...he didnt argue with the ref, he knew striaght away what he did.
Martin Reilly's black card was rescinded on appeal.

Evano 11 ... What differance does it make that the black card was resinded...? We lost a vital player at crucial time in the game for a clumsy tackle..but getting the card recinded means nothing.. The ref should be called into question for having a major say in the outcome of a match.. Black card resinded...!!! What a joke
