Ulster SFC 2015. Cavan v Monaghan

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Simple reality is that our big hitters shyed away when the going got tough, Monaghan's stood up. Walshe, Hughes, Clerkin, they grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and led their county to victory. Our lads backed down. The confidence has been knocked out of this team, firstly I suspect the thrashing Roscommon gave us last year, and secondly the league where we bottled the Meath game and surrendered promotion (as it was at the time).

And will somebody please, please take down that "future is blue flag" behind the goals. Who do we think we are making such boasts? A bit of humility wouldn't go astray.

Did you not watch the minor game Ned "the future is blue",, The game on Sunday should have been won and I believe the same about 2013 , we are too slow to make changes, every player does have an off day so don't leave them on the whole game, its that simple,, we were up by four points at one stage in the second half, instead of pushing on, we went back to the same old crap and tried to defend the lead , that style of play doesn't suit theses lads, how long does it take before they finally realise that. Argue was left in full forward with no ball coming into him for about 15 min's in the second half,, Barry Reilly and Tom Hayes should have been brought on with 20 min's to go ,, leave Hayes beside Argue and let Reilly drop the ball in on top of them would have been an option , I don't know if its that they have no confidents in the players or if its that they want there style of play to work. In fairness to the management team they have put in serious effort and time to the squad , they just need someone else along with them to make the quick calls and changes, that will be the differences in close games.

No way was Martin Reilly's tackle a black card having watched it back. He puts his hand over the Monaghan players shoulder. Monaghan player is cute then, grabs his arm and goes to ground. Martin Reilly does protest also pointing at his arm to show he was pulled down.

Simple fact Monaghan knew how to win a game.
They were smarter on the line and on the field. End of story
Best of luck to them in Ulster

We were Shocking bad in the last 20 minutes. I am sickened. I also had my fill of those Monaghan fans behind the goals. You would swear they had 10 all Irelands in the last 10 years.

Cavan lost by a point to one of the top 6 teams in Ireland. I am devastated by the result and devastated for the players and management that worked so hard. Its taken me days to post. It really is so so sad to see what is almost glee on this forum towards the loss. There are forums elsewhere where talk is balanced and criticism is fair. That where I'm off to and I will leave you to wallow in your bitterness and hatred.

I would have to agree with you fred and if anyone cared to look at the players faces after the match i think its all that needed to be said. Its easy to say "told ya so"..."Same old"..."lads lay down".. So to try to balance it here are some positives even though we didn't win the game

-8 different players scored for Cavan
-Definitely a change in tactics and we were more direct. Scored 15 point
-Argue was a success at Full forward and had Wylie in trouble.
-For those who though McKiernan had a bad game he scored 2 points from play while being double marked by McAdam and Corey
-Galligan nailed every short kickout and we lost none. He even chipped Mansy a couple of times
-P Finlay was completely marked out of the game..
-We had Monaghan up a stick for long periods of the game

Would have to agree with examiners reporter, Terry Hyland and the Cavan team were hard done by the RTE panel.
For me there are a few incidents that were the cause of our defeat
First was a foul on Darren McVeety as he went through which subsequently led to Monaghan's first score of five and Martin Reilly's black card.
Another were the enforced changes of yellow carded players. I can understand the managements worry about either of them been sent off.
Looking closely at the game we also gave away some needless frees.
One free especially stuck out when flannigan fouled McManus which led to another of the 5 points which cost us the game.
Discipline is the order of the day for the next match.

Folks, five days after the event and I feel worse than I did when the final whistle was blown. It's very important that the progress which has been made is continued.

Paddy Heaney wrote the article and has an agenda against Joe Brolly going back a few years - note how Malachy O Rourke brought Monaghan from Division 3 to Division 1 winning an Ulster Title along the way and then he mentions Hyland success at U21, no senior success, thats the difference. Heaney wasnt at the game on Sunday either, so his writing is also based on TV coverage.
Theres no-one else to blame but the management & team - we were 4pts up and comfortable, and the instruction came out from the sidelines to pull back into the defensive mode, we became completely clueless, got turned over on many occasion and Monaghan kicked 5 pts in a row - end of story. We dont have quality like Lee Keegan, Jack McCaffrey etc etc.
Martin Reillys black card was the correct decision, he had his hands high and left the ref with no choice, Jason McLaughlin pulled out of a tackle which he should have made. Argue had no impact in the 2nd half whatsoever, he was left in there far too long.

"Paddy Heaney wrote the article and has an agenda against Joe Brolly going back a few years"...

What has that got to do with Cavan football..

Deanmartin, Martin Reilly had his hands high so a black card deserved???? When did this new offence get added to the rules for the black card? I take each game on its merits and the side line made some strange calls. Dunne should have being on earlier near the handy breaking ball, maybe even starting. McDermot, Flanagan, Mackey etc.. like coming deep so no one there for breaks. Gearoid should have being in midfield. Mackey if not fit for whole game maybe better served coming on and finish the game with him or give him instructions to stay inside. Also players need to be more disciplined in tackle so we avoid issues of having to take of booked players and giving so many scorable frees away. I don't think the players were told to go negative when four points up, often it happens naturally but the message should be driven home to kill of teams in such a position.
