Ulster SFC 2015. Cavan v Monaghan

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Now that the league is over anyone care to name a team for the big challenge that is Monaghan .

Should be a big crowd and great atmosphere , especially since both teams had good league campaigns - Monaghan more so .

My team:

Gilsenan

McLoughlin
R Dunne
R Flanagan - Monaghan play 2 up so he won't be man-marking

McEnroe
F Flanagan
K Clarke

McKiernan
Corr

Mackey
M Reilly
McVeety

M Dunne
Argue - not his best position but we need a target man.
McDermott

Would like to see Givney and Keating come back in - don't think either ruled themselves out for the full year??

Givney was suppose to have an operation on his ankle recently, doubtful he will be back. It was said at the time Keating could be back this year.

Faulkner I think should be drafted into the panel, picked up a hamstring injury against Donegal in the U21's. How long is he out for?. He adds a more physicial edge then either Ronan Flanagan or Jason McGlaughlin, good players nonetheless.

Would play Killian Clarke corner back and put in Damien Reilly instead of R Flanagan..Maybe Moynagh in for Argue as think he would be better coming off the bench

1-12 we're every bit as good as Monaghan. We have a crafty half forward line. A towering midfield. Should be well capable of cleaning them out at midfield where they're weak. It's up front I'd be very concerned about. The two Wylie lads are good defenders, Walshe is top quality too, they will more than have the measure of our full forward line. Cavan simply don't score enough. I keep saying it, but what a pity Keating is gone. The ball is going in quicker this year than was the case last year, really think he could do well if he returned.

Bit concerned about a lack of options on the bench too. All them players leaving has left us threadbare.

Nonetheless in a local derby as bitter as this one, there won't be more than a point or two in it.

It will take more than home advantage to beat Monaghan.
Loads of teams have won in Breffni Park.
We need to sort out the forward line and get the absent players back.
AND have a plan B when plan A is not working.

Team are off to new York soon. I'm afraid if Keating or givney are not on that plane then it would be impossible to include them for championship. As I said before, both of them left the panel for work reasons as well as injury problems. Its up to them whether they want to be involved, not a lot Terry can do.

Do you honestly believe they WILL

It would seem unlikely mowbar, they are not under contract so they can do what they want. Personally and without knowing the fine points of their individual cases, I would have thought that this was the year to commit as the draw is as good as it gets in ulster. They should reconsider for themselves and for Cavan. Terry can do nothing about this, its the players call.

Think we need to be realistic about our chances in this game... I think if any supporter is honest with themselves there probably isn't a line on the pitch which we can say we are stronger than Monaghan and I include midfield in that (I agree that McKiernan is probably a better fielder than Hughes but I still would rate Hughes as every bit as good as McKiernan). And the biggest gulf in class has been highlighted by a few other posters already and that is up front. McManus is as good as any forward in the country and we just don't have that quality.

Being honest, I think our only chance is if Monaghan have an off day and if not I'll be hoping for a narrow defeat and then a run in the qualifiers.

Givney and Keating are a big loss but if they cannot commit for whatever the reasons were better off planning without them.
Tough couple of months of training for the lads.
I feel that we've achieved enough with retaining div 2 status.
All eyes on the big one, no more post-mortems .

I can't wait for this one! This is why we all love sport; a derby day with your rivals. Whats to be scared of? I think that there are positives to take form the league and we are not in bad shape at all. We lost a few this year but not by much. I think that there is lots to build on. Our minors should be entertaining this year also.

So I am counting down the days until the championship and patiently waiting for the smell of freshly cut grass in May as I walk down to Breffni park for a first round game. This sport is a big part of me and it gives me satisfaction. I don't like losing but its part of life. The way some of the posters carry on here is unbelievable.

I have been enjoying it for the last 25 years and I cannot wait for the championship to start!

BRING IT ON!!

Monaghan put in a super performance against the Dubs there in Croker, only a point separating them in the end, Monaghan's rise has been meteoric, they are among the best teams in the country now.

This is going to be a seriously tough assignment.

Fast movement of the ball.
Quality fast delivery of ball to Mc Manus who had a super game, ball played into his chest or popped in front of him.
That was what made Monaghan look so good today.
If we want to beat them we have to man mark Mc Manus and like they did today move the ball fast into attack and give it to the full forward line right.
Martin Dunne must be at his wits end at waitin to see if he's goin to get any ball, no wonder he is gettin so few scores.
Dublin played direct low ball to Ciaran Kilkenny all first half, he won and laid off everythin and set up several scores, likewise Cork and Donegal. Fast accurate ball, that's the key, isn't that what Mc Hale was brought in to do..?
If we play slow laborious build up lateral ball Monaghan will ate us. If we play like Monaghan we could beat them. I've always said we have the players, we are just not usin them right. We played glimpses of fast ball in the league and Mc Kenna cup, we have good man markers, we have good forwards, just put it together right and let the players play. We can beat a very very good Monaghan team.

Good post Shannon.
This is the way we should be playing but we will continue with the slow build-up and play into Monaghan's hands no doubt.
If we were going to play fast flowing football in the C/ship we would have been doing it already.

Were any of you in Portlaoise to see what happened when we let fast ball into our full forward line? It came right back out as Dunne was cleaned out of it time after time. McDermott fared a little better. We won the game by running the ball fast through the hands with men off the shoulder and that's where our scores came from. We don't have a McManus

After watching Monaghans defeat to Dublin yesterday we will have to be at our very best to win.
