Time to draw a line under the league and focus on the main event. Can we keep the discussion to team selection, tactics and likely match-ups please? There is enough of the politics and big-picture stuff on other threads.
The simple question- is there a 15-plus-subs in this Cavan panel that can take Monaghan out? I believe there is (for what that's worth). But to do it Mickey needs to ditch some big names and select based on form and fitness. Meath showed yet again yesterday that when you stop the runs from deep, the Monaghan forward line goes missing and becomes totally reliant on McManus. Frustration creeps in and the error count rises. They are weak at midfield too and it looks like Niall Kearns will not be ready in time. These are the points to exploit. A young hungry team that can tackle hard and play on the break all day has a fighting chance. I would give this lineup a chance.
R Galligan
Luke Fortune Faulkner Killian Brady
Martin Reilly
Ciaran Brady Gerry Smith Oisin Kiernan
James Smith Thomas Galligan
Stephen Smith Chris Conroy Oisin Brady
Conor Smith G Mac
Pierson and Madden to freshen the forwards off the bench. Moving McKiernan out later on gives him time to get into the game. Jason McLoughlin losing out as his form hasn't been great but he would be a great option to tie down a second half attacking sub. No Killian Clarke, he could work for 10 minutes at the end when we need experienced heads to protect a lead. Chris Conroy moved up to 11, he lacks the pace for CHB but has been playing well. Martin Reilly sweeping up with instructions to move turnovers fast to 5/7/10/12 who all have pace. Luke Fortune on McManus leaving Faulkner as the last line.

Cormac O'Reilly has been the best player since the restart but you deem him surplus to requirements.. Jog on...

Moynagh and mcvitty abroad and rehill and argue were with their clubs but not sure did they opt out or did they not get asked in.

My starting 15:
Galligan McLoughlin Faulkner Cusack (Do a man marking job on McManus) Brady Clarke Gerry Smith James Smith Thomas Galligan Gearoid McKiernan Martin Reilly Chris Conroy Oisin Pierson Cormac O'Reilly Conor Smith
When the backline has been so loose, I can't understand how Danny Cusack hasn't got a run over the last two weeks. Most disciplined defender I've seen in club football in a long time. Only interested in doing his job.
The above starting 15 would leave the two Murrays and Conor Madden available as players to come on and make an impact.

McLoughlin into that suggested team for Killian Brady. We don't need to be handing McManus handy frees all day.
Madden and Cormac O'Reilly both to start.
Agree sweeper is needed.
Winnable game but huge increase in intensity and improvement in finishing needed to even come close.

That's a physically light full forward line for Winter Championship football. Good players, but you some presence. It's noticeable with Conor McManus, that has got stronger during the lockdown. Faulkner probaly the player for making him.

Are you missing any players that were absent from the two games with Covid that might come in and do something? Asking more in hope that expectation as that is not a great team, and the forward line is quite light. If not, my team would be:
1. Galligan (would have James Farrelly instead if he is on the panel but don't think he is)
2. McTimoney 3. McLoughlin (On McManus) 4. Cusack (Taking other peoples word on him for the most part)
15. Oisin Kiernan (Sweeper)
6. Faulkner (Stand your ground Faulkner)
5. Ciaran Brady 7. Gerry Smith
8. Gearoid McKiernan 9. Thomas Galligan 12. James Smith
10. Martin Reilly 11. Conor Madden
13. Conor Smith 14. Cormac O'Reilly
Gearoid can take the left footed and straight frees, and Galligan can take the long range and right footed frees.
Decent team of big men from 5-12 there that should be able to keep us competitive against a mediocre Monaghan if they actually show up on the day. The gambles are obviously in the two inside lines. The two young corner backs are unproven, but I think the alternatives to them are proven to be not good enough at this stage, so I have went for exuberance. With Faulkner needed at CB, McLoughlin is the next best option for the job.
Not really seeing much left then in the way of impact subs. Stephen Murray coming on at 5 or 7 if he has 15 mins in him would be useful. Happy enough for Conroy to come on for Martin Reilly in the playmaker role at a similar time, and perhaps Oisin Pierson for one of the inside men. Niall Murray would be considered if fit & sharp but dont think he is anywhere near.

Magee has some presence. He hasn't featured in last 2 games, so probably not likely to feature. Niall McDermott was excellent in the Intermediate Championship, dunno was he asked in or couldn't commit. Caoimhin Reilly a good ball winner too, opted out for for year.

In an ideal world, he would have got game time over the past couple of weeks but unfortunately Mickey didn't see that far ahead. Faulkner will mark McManus but I was selecting my own 15 that I'd play if I was county manager.

My point was how could you select a player based on only seeing him in club football and get him to man mark one of the best forwards in the country. Thats madness.

Going to be a good game, can't wait for it. Without doubt Faulkner will be on mc manus. Last week's exhibition from mc manus v Meath couldn't have come at a better time. Focus on him and the rest will do the damage and when they do the eyes will come off him. I can tell you one thing, mc manus won't beat you on his own ,it will be the easy scores other get that will do the damage when everyone's eyes are on mc manus. I am amazed by the focus on him here and not one mention of the others.
I think kickouts and weather Cavan really pressure beggans kickouts from the start will be key. Monaghan will look to keep it close at the start and beggan will look them short kickouts and he has struggled in the last while to land them when pressure is put on and if i was Cavan I would make him go long and push up.
As always we will have a man marker on mc Kiernan, don't think either Hughes be fit for him so I say fintan Kelly could get the job. He will play a big role in the outcome. I mind him last year he stood up and kicked some massive scores when Cavan beat us. I can see mickey Graham trying him in full forward for a while to test our defence which with Conor Boyle full back is not as tightas it was. No drew Wylie or Walshe there
Don't writeof Kearns, talk of him training well and if he is fit he plays and don't be surprised to see him in the middle Saturday.
Free kicks will be massive and I noticed against roscommon yous hadn't a recognised free taker bar gearoid. I would not be scared of Conroy taking them from distance and vice versa pressure will be on Cavan to limit frees especially with beggan and mc manus on the field. Whoever gives away the less frees will be well on course for victory.
Home Venue will count for nothing, Clones as close to a home stadium for Cavan too.
It will be close and edgy and all on the line and discipline will be the difference and maybe a bit of magic from mc manus.

The focus been on McManus as he's usually the difference. Monaghan not a one man team of course, but would be interesting to see a Monaghan team in Championship without McManus. They would be a lesser team, and probaly wouldn't have lasted as long in Division 1 without him. McCarthy, Kieran Hughes will all take watching, nor as consistent as McManus.

Add in Darren Hughes all star half back Karl o connell. All scorers who contribute. About 7 of the 8 would walk into the Cavan team so in this case when we play Cavan it is rightful to talk about the others.
