Mackey was working in London when McGleenan took over and was persuaded back. They got him a new job.
Other players might not have the hunger for it.

If the worst was to come to it, and Cavan end up in Division 3,there will be more opt outs.Bringing more players in and falling behind on conditioning.

Ok so tell me what you would have done to keep any of the lads from the starting 15 from last year on this years panel?

I think it's time to ask questions of the County Board, is it time to clear out the old establishment and the businesses men club"
They need to start by cutting this underage link to St Pats, year on year it's the same our minor squads are full of lads from unsuccessful St Pats teams and this year is no different. This year's Rannafast Squad who make up most of the minor panel didn't get by the quarter finals and we expect them to beat Derry in April??? The St Pat's MacRory starting team consisted of 10 of last years minors with the remainder made up of the previous years minors, yet they still couldn't beat a co-Ed school from Derry last week, and in an earlier round were beaten by 27 points by another Derry college. This link to St Pats hasn't worked for up on 50 years, it high time we started to select players based on their ability and not because of who they are. Then and only then we might see our top players coming through and being committed to the county in the future.Alas these young lads realise pretty quick that it's politics that selects the county squads and not ability so they move on and find other sports like soccer, athletics, rugby and even maybe basketball.

What does St Pats have to do with lads who have opt out this year?

Niall Murray out of the Westmeath game, Conor Smith and Madden struggling to make it. Its hard to see where scores will come from.
Is Connolly injured? Didn't feature v Armagh

It's not actually St Pat's itself, it's the county boards attitude towards St Pats, if you play for them you are treated as elitist and every one else second rate whereas this isn't the reality. Our top young players aren't stupid and can see this happening, they know it's a case of who you are not what you are.In the years down the line if they are still at the top of their game and maybe called into join the senior squad they'll be thinking twice about it, they may give it a go for a year maybe not ,one bitten twice shy and all that. Treat players with respect you'll get it back in spades, treat them like s.... and you know the rest. So it's not at the present the effect will take place but in the future, and it maybe the reason lads declined the invitation in previous years.Indeed Gearoid McKiernan was being overlooked at underage, but common sense prevailed and he has turned out to be, not just one of the best in the county but also the province.

Would I be right in thinking none of the opt outs went to st pats? McVeety maybe did? Might have a point re county squad but has nothing to do with this topic.

Ah yea sorry about that, but I was originally replying to a post questioning the ethics in the County Board and was just giving my two cents worth . Should have posted it in the continuous Failure thread. There is actually another thread dealing with opt outs.

If he is gone it might be a god send so lets see how they perform over their next three matches for they have to win these games if they wish to stay up.

It's a mess the whole situation, the reports coming out about the goings on in the county set up is disappointing. Hopefully the lads can pull a win Saturday night

Little surprised at conditioning and fitness of players last Saturday night especially compared to Armagh. Perhaps over trained with wrong training. Was at Clare game which was first round of division 2 league a couple of years back and thought both teams would be relegated after terrible game. Cavan ended up getting promoted. A win is possible Saturday against Westmeath and hopefully season kicks on from there.

I have no doubt Mickey and co are trying their best. However, are they approaching it in the right fashion? Is there a need to rack up 23/24 sessions in November? Is there a need for 20+ sessions in December? Does this entice players to play football at an amateur level??? I can count 10 players who played at some stage last year not being part of the panel this year. How can you compete at a high level if this is the case?? If a player wants to take November / December off so be it - joining the panel the 1st of Jan is not an issue in my eyes, especially for players who have a couple of years under their belt. Maybe if this the case than maybe half of those players may have not dropped out. Some of our absentees would have steadied that ship last Saturday and lessened the blow.

Whipped last week, injuries mounting up, bad vibes from the panel, and the 6 nations on the TV.
Plus Westmeath are not exactly box office themselves

Tomorrow evening will be one for the diehards

They do not have to win the next 3 matches to stay up, if they win 3 out of the next 6 matches it could/should keep them up.

if the whole thing is a mess..do you really want them to win the odd game to paper over the cracks and cover up the mess? Would it not be better they get beaten so that proper questions start to be asked of the proper folk?
