Were in a for a long year if these reports of all the dropouts are true. Questions need to be asked. Same thing happened to mcglennan in his second year . I'm spotting a common denominator here. blueskies (Cavan) - Posts: 151 - 26/11/2019 21:14:41 2251662 Link 0 |

In fairness to McVeety and Clarke, and whoever else may be dropping away, I'd imagine the donegal demolition and humiliation to Tyrone made them realise that they're light years away from the big boys and are realistically not going to win meaningful senior silverware in their careers. With that realisation, it must be very hard to summon up the stomach required for another 7-8 months of full on commitment. GallantJohnJoe (Cavan) - Posts: 310 - 26/11/2019 22:40:16 2251691 Link 0 |

I think we need to stop making apologies for these lads. The fact is Monaghan, Donegal, Tyrone dont lose players like we do so I say that maybe there is a problem mentally with our players. The jersey doesnt mean enough to them, they are not willing to do what needs to be done to win. That is the problem, time to stop making excuses for them.

I read recently Vinny Corey and Dessie Mone are intending to play on with Monaghan next year. Corey is 36 and Mone 35.. FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2216 - 27/11/2019 09:41:46 2251735 Link 0 |

McVeety, Killian Clarke and Moynagh have all opted out now at this stage. I'd also imagine we'll see at least two retirements from Galligan, Mackey and Martin Reilly, as they're all hitting their mid 30s. Ned_Stormcrow (Cavan) - Posts: 1022 - 27/11/2019 10:02:47 2251743 Link 0 |
A real negative and petty swipe at the players efforts. Do you not think maybe that after 50 years of continuing failure that there may be systemic or structural issues in the way Gaelic football is approached in Cavan? Ned_Stormcrow (Cavan) - Posts: 1022 - 27/11/2019 10:09:29 2251744 Link 0 |
A year or two ago I might have agreed with you. But on reflection no. Do you see conor McManus taking years out. We got a new manager and this is the loyalty he has been shown. It's not just the big names either, its fellas opting in 1 year, out the next. How can you expect to get to the level required. Cavan lost an Ulster final in a manager's maiden year in 95, 2 years later we were champs. King, damien reilly, peter and Larry took no years out. They kept soldiering for Cavan. I expect a bit more from lads that wear the Cavan Jersey.

The reason the players are opting out is because Cavan are a basket case of a county when it comes to Gaelic football. The Cavan people are total fanatics about the sport, Gaelic football has little to compete with when it comes to winning the hearts and minds of youngsters, and yet we still can't get a decent team together. Why? Conor McManus doesn't opt out because he's won two USFC titles in his career, and Monaghan consistently play in division one. He plays because his team are moderately successful. What about our team? They're not within an asses roar of the top teams in the province, these fellas know they're never going to win anything playing for Cavan, so why bother? Until the structural issues are addressed we're going nowhere. As I said, we'll just carry on as is, and lament the same failings year after year. Dead right . King played for 20 years and won nothing. He Never turned away from the county and he got his reward in 97 . Plenty of time to relax when your finished playing these boys are in there peak the time is now.

That's not entirely a valid comparison, the world is a very different place now than it was in the 80s. Gaelic football is also a completely different sport to the one it was back then, much higher demands on players etc. You can't expect lads to put their lives on hold for nothing. Which is what they've been doing for the best part of a decade, and they didn't come close to winning anything. Ned_Stormcrow (Cavan) - Posts: 1022 - 27/11/2019 12:09:54 2251768 Link 0 |
Why is it Cavan seems to be affected far worse than other counties when it comes to key players walking away. Pullhard1985 (USA) - Posts: 68 - 27/11/2019 12:12:15 2251770 Link 0 |
