Let's draw Monaghan play it in Brewster if Cavan are drawn first as we don't have a pitch and either beat them or try and get quality from the championship for next season. Too many lower division players on our county panel. . mowbar (Cavan) - Posts: 423 - 10/06/2018 23:26:20
ooooh ! I see the ol lower division snobbery is coming back !!
Why don't we just pick the entire panel from just Division 1 ???!! Must be some reason behind it ! Maybe because some of the poor relations in the lower divisions are better in their position than their Division 1 counterparts.
They also train with the " elite" every week so I assume they are holding their position on merit, as I'm sure if there were better player out there ( and if they were interested in playing) they would be on the team. For example, when he was playing, Givney was one of our best players and he was from the lower class !!!!

Could have got a better draw but hopefully momentum, or Down's lack of momentum should take us through.
Worryingly though, I heard over the weekend that there is a total lack of communication and preparation between Mattie & the players. And a lack of faith and understanding from the players in him because of that.
Apparently the team and system was named very late on for the game at the weekend, and between the Donegal game and the Wicklow there were no training games played to rehearse the new defensive system whatsoever.
The line was 'we are going to revert to defensive tactics and put men behind the ball'.
Then the trainings consisted of 3 weeks of tackling and shooting drills without any mention of what positions the players would take up in defence or attack or who would take them up, and a team was named to go out and play the game.
I didn't get to the game but I'm told it showed that the players didn't really seem to know what they were supposed to be doing apart from getting bodies behind the ball, and that a combination of better players and some favourable refereeing decisions at keys moments took us through.

Pat not a bit surprised with the above??
Well this is a better draw for Down should have beat Cavan in the league 3 or 4 clear cut goal chances so despite Down now in Division 3 and Cavan in Division 1 they both played in div 2 just gone. This will be a better chance to to see if there is anything there. Regarding the pitch I drove by it this morning on my way to work and it is like the sahara desert down there so there will be no match on it.

What a load of old Boll...ks. I'm not saying that Cavan were good, in fact I was very disappointed with them. They started playing from the throw in with 14 men behind the ball, unbelievable. Seanie Johnson played between the two 45's and every player except for Mcveety & McKiernan that got the ball in that zone clearly had instructions to give him the ball. The Cavan full forward rotated every 10 mins or so and cavan had players hugging both side lines from the very start clearly to stretch the Wicklow blanket defence, Clearly they did have a plan and knew what to do. I'm not saying I agree with it but on the evidence I saw at the game they had a very clear plan. In addition and talking to another supporter after the game he said Cavan had a challenge game against Dublin and the defensive blanket was back bigtime.

I'm sure they were told a plan before the game alright. It wouldn't take a genius to take instruction to 'give the ball to Seanie', or 'Other attackers are to break to the wings when GmcK & McVeety are running at the defence with the ball' etc.
All the lads on the panel would be used to taking these kind of instructions from management even at club level.
What I was told was that it looked disjointed and without direction, which would point to a lack of preparation and rehearsal in training.
What I said was that I was told that training was all drills and there were no training matches at the trainings.
I wasn't talking about challenge games but that said I will admit that I didn't know about the challenge game against the Dubs if there was one and assumed they didn't play any challenges. But I'm sure that would have been a big help.

That game was hard watching.....pedestrian pace, and when Seanie got on the ball, it slowed down even more.
Dara, back to carrying the ball into contact.....Down wont be anything as naive as Wicklow in defence.
Why did he drop Galligan and Mackey....Galligan was one of the best keepers in the league and also made vital saves v Donegal......well they werent vital in the grand scheme of things, but he kept the score down and made no mistakes. Hes just chopping and changing for the sake of it

I really hope that the game reflected Cavan in 2nd gear as Wicklow really were dreadful, although Cavan got a very soft penalty and Wicklow forwards from the few chances that they had couldn't score in a brothel.
Until Stafford scored the goal their leading scorer was their goalie that nailed 3 placed balls. Only thing positive that I got from the match was game time for McVeety & Martin Reilly. I didn't see Jason McLoughlin however.

It was slow, and tiresome....Wicklow were weak with 14 behind the ball.....most of the play went through the middle, and better teams than Wicklow will be better equipped to deal with that. I have been at club games this year where teams were set up better.

I think Downs experience of playing in Clones this year will tip the scales in their favor. Some may find this a silly comment but when both teams got annihilated by Donegal in the championship this year, its the inches that count.

Game fixed for Clones.
Anyone know what the story with Buchanan is? We could use him around the middle of the field.

No idea when hes due back. He was on the terrace in Aughrim rather than with the squad so I doubt if theres any hope of him being involved

If Cavan who are Division 1 in 2019 can't beat Down who are Division 2 in 2019, McGleenan needs to go.

I think you have called it correctly, Saturday's game was over at half time. We will learn more about the team on Saturday/Sunday week. I hope the game is fixed for Clones as i think this venue will suit the team better than a local venue. The team have played their best football when playing outside the county, Mayo in Castlebar last year and Cork away this year.

Also, I'm fairly sure Down are in div 3 next year.
Regardless of the result though, there needs to be a serious enquiry into why our player turnover is so high, particularly among the 75 lads who played u21 from 2010 to 14, a golden generation of Cavan underage talent that is being wasted.

All the optimism on this page.. never mind the glass half full or empty ..there is no glass at all...
Anyhow we did all the work in the first half into the wind against Wicklow and to me it was quite structured how we went about our business. It was patient and we waited for opening, not saying i agree with it but thats the way it was played. It was different than against Donegal where we played much more open football which cost us. I know it was Wicklow but i thought we were savage disciplined with our tackling.
I think we will have enough for Down, its by no means a dead cert but we have another game under our belt since exiting Ulster compared to them.
