A link with the great Cornafean teams of the past was severed with the passing on Tuesday, May 16th, 2017 of John McCormack, Lahard, Killeshandra, who was aged 83. John was from a family of eight and the McCormacks are steeped in gaelic football. He was a pillar of the Cornafean team for many years alongside his brothers Frank and Gene. In 1956, when Cornafean defied the odds to record a 4-2 to 1-7 victory over Bailieborough Shamrocks in the Cavan SFC final, John delivered a magnificent Man of the Match display from centre half back. A quiet and decent man, John was a popular member of the local farming community. He was honorary club president at the time of his death and Cornafean footballers past and present formed a Guard of Honour at his funeral, where his coffin was draped in the number six jersey that John McCormack wore with such distinction.
