Optimistic Posts

(Oldest Posts First)

For Deanmartin Tynan to post some optimistic messages. Probably will be the quietest thread in hoganstand history.

Good man Fred, we all know Terry's departure as manager would have hit you particularly hard. Great to have you back here again after what was undoubtedly a tough time for you.

As for optimistic posts, it's very hard to be optimistic when you support Cavan in case you haven't noticed. A single Provincial title in almost 50 years for a county that don't have any other sport to compete with. Rather poor don't you think? What do YOU think is the problem?

I'd argue we have a soccer scene and two rugby clubs. Also niche sports such as athletics, golf, cycling are available where young lads can have a life also. Unfair to say we have football and that's it.

Some loons on this thread. We just been promoted to div one!! It's the same rubbish every year. Last year it was predictions of relegation to div 3 and the same chat the year before. Maybe we should wait for a few results before we Make any rash decisions.

Every county has other sports to contend with so that's not an argument. My point is Gaelic football in Cavan has a virtual monopoly. Yes, there are obviously other sports clubs available, but in the main young fellas in Cavan will choose GAA, in contrast to other counties which have genuine rival sports. Soccer would be much stronger in Longford, Louth, Sligo, Donegal, Derry, rugby would be much stronger in Limerick, Cork, Dublin, and then obviously you have hurling in other areas. Cavan GAA simply do not have major contenders for a player base.

I actually think it is healthy to change manager every couple of years. What I don't agree with is blaming a man like Terry Hyland for the fact we are not winning Ulster every year - especially when you look at our record in modern times as you outlined yourself Ned. We are in the most competitive province after all. Now all sane people will say that we made progress with Terry and I am hoping the new man can make more progress and I wish him the absolute best.

Yet even though we have made progress and got to Div 1 where we can test ourselves against the best teams week in and week out, there are still a bunch of begrudging moaners who still have nothing good to say about anything.

Can only 100% agree with that Fred.

Now, Awwwwnow has compared us before (can't remember his reason but something he clearly had in his head at the time that was bugging him) and he'll probably say we're the same person now! Anyway, it would take someone completely out of touch to claim that Terry Hyland didn't improve this Cavan team on and off the field. Just listen to the players themselves.
Alan O'Meara's book is a good read, and on the footballing side of things, one point he made that really stood out was that the under 21s who played under Terry couldn't believe how far behind the senior set-up was when they first joined. It needed a complete overhaul and Terry brought that about.
From lower division 3 to Division 1 in his tenure - how can anyone argue with that??
