Probably the biggest sporting event this weekend and it's being hosted by clubs in Cavan, Monaghan & Fermanagh. I hope all the teams enjoy the experience and they bring home happy memories of the event. FrDougalMaguire (Cavan) - Posts: 152 - 22/06/2017 14:52:33 2003585 Link 0 |

Great weekend / Great hospitality / Great weather and Great football On a contraversial note did anyone see the Boys Division one Shield Final in Breffni ( scoreboard was adjusted by a point in Gowna's favour with about two minutes to go - and they won by a point - some unpleasant scenes afterwards ruanua (Donegal) - Posts:4897 - 26/06/2017 08:48:01 2005340 What you see on the score board may be different from the referees so what ever the referee has in his book is the correct result. People seem to think the scoreboard is the one to go with but not so. Who ever did the scoreboard may have got instructions through the referee to the lines person to him. This is the only way this will happen. The Quiet Man (Cavan) - Posts: 4565 - 26/06/2017 10:46:35 2005503 Link 0 |
Yes, I was at it and the way both clubs carried themselves was embarrassing to see. St Broughans scored a point that was never posted on the scoreboard, and for some bizarre reason the referee wasn't keeping the score so scoreboard dictated the result even though everyone knew that the game finished a draw. St Broughans requested that Gowna should not accept the cup because they knew game was a draw, they asked Aogan O Fearghail was there anyone he could do to help, but Gowna being Gowna stood firm and accepted the honours despite not winning the match. They also misbehaved in Terry Coyle earlier in the weekend. St. Broughans then booed when Gowna players were accepting the medals and cup. For clubs to be promoting such values to 13,14 year olds is disgusting to see. theDagger1986 (Cavan) - Posts: 178 - 26/06/2017 10:52:07 2005515 Link 0 |
theDagger1986 (Cavan) - Posts:49 - 26/06/2017 10:52:07 2 Thats a shame but sadly the buck stops with the organisers to make sure a proper referee does his job and if it was a proper referee he should not get another game. Are you sure this is the case. ?? Who refereed it. The Quiet Man (Cavan) - Posts: 4565 - 26/06/2017 11:13:33 2005539 Link 0 |
My understanding of what happened is that the referee believed that the scoreboard was incorrect and that Gowna were 2-7 (at the time the scoreboard was 3-6 (St Broughans) to 2-6 (gowna) - He instructed that the score be adjusted when play broke for the Penalty - The penalty was scored and Gowna were now 3-6 which was changed again to 3-7 (reflecting the missing score) St Broghans then scored and scoreboard was 3-7 to 3-7 then Gowna scored 3-8 to 3-7 ruanua (Donegal) - Posts: 4964 - 26/06/2017 14:28:23 2005739 Link 0 |

Certainly the scenes were unpleasant - The Offaly team were joined by the losers of the semi final in Terry Coyle park who clearly had issue with Gowna in their protest. The boos were met by very crude hand jestures by the Gowna team as they received the cup ruanua (Donegal) - Posts:4899 - 26/06/2017 14:28:23 2005739 That means the the referee was indeed keeping the score and it's normal if there is an error with the score board a message is sent to the person doing it as I though. Well, it's up to management and coaches of teams in this instance to behave themselves and do the right thing. Whoever they are they should be ashamed of themselves. If there was confusion the two sets of coaches should have got together with the ref and decided on what to do. Mistakes can be made but bad behaviour at underage games is not acceptable. I'm sure The president of the GAA did not know who was right or who was wrong , it's not his decision as to who the winner of a game is. If the two teams and ref could not agree on the score then it should have been replayed or play another 5 minutes or 10 or whatever. s goldrick (Cavan) - Posts: 5356 - 26/06/2017 15:14:39 2005793 Link 0 |
Does not surprise me one bit with the club involved. Win at all costs mentality from U8's up, coaches shouting and screaming at underage players, players then misbehaving on field, try and intimidate the officials, the opposition etc. Put ignoramus' doing umpires and on the line.

Reading this weeks celt report on the controversial boys shield div 1 final & note that Noel Mooney (ref) Joe Mcquillan (linesman) & maggie Farrelly (4th official) were the officials in charge. Definitely our 3 most prominent officials all inter county referees. As a previous poster pointed out the referee's score is all that matters & with those 3 experienced officials in charge it can only be assumed that the score was indeed correct

It's a pity that the people in charge didnt take time out to check the score line before the presentation. I'm sure there were neutrals there who would have been keeping the score and both teams would have also had someone keeping the score. Both team managers and the referee and the organisers could have calmly gone through the scores and come to a conclusion. marita (None) - Posts: 464 - 29/06/2017 09:00:16 2007261 Link 0 |
